  1. I used to be Baghdad Bob and before that Deefan. I changed my name to Baghdad Bob when we were shocking, mainly under Neeld. Many misinterpreted why I chose the name Baghdad Bob aka Muḥammad Saʿīd Al-Ṣaḥḥāf (comical ali, not chemical ali). He was the information minister for Iraq during the invasion by the US led coalition and despite the terrible situation of Iraq at the time Baghdad was waveringly positive. I felt that we also needed to remain positive and hence the name. I kept it for a long time but when we won the GF last year the need for BB was past. Slartibartfast, as has been pointed out, is probably my favourite character from The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy and he's famous for saying "I'd much rather be happy than right, any day". It seems a good philosophy to me.

  2. A little off-topic I know, but since when has that ever stopped me, amirite?! One day I got to thinking about how if someone dies suddenly their online contacts may never know. To this end I had a convo with my middle son. I said, “if I was to die suddenly, don’t worry about FB, nor Insta, nor any of the band forums I’ve ever been on, there’s just one thing I want you to do online. I want you to tell my friends on Demonland that I’m dead. You don’t have to create an account, just log in under my account and let them know.” He said, “so, to be clear… if you die you want me to log into your fan forum, as you, to tell them you’re dead. Okaaay” 😳 So I said “ok then, create your own account for the purpose. You could call yourself SOWCW as in Son Of WCW.” He said, “nah, I’d be Walking Civil Unrest, and he (points to his younger brother) can be Walking Minor Spat.” 😂 Yep, we put the FUN in dysFUNctional!

  3. We'll be patient if you just want to quickly churn out six dozen nonsense texts in order to change your handle. They would probably be as insightful as the rest of ours. .

  4. Neither of those, EO. Lyrics from a band called Mercury Rev (their name belies their music; they produce the sweetest songs not unlike The Flaming Lips). Also because I have a problem with indecision and oftentimes feel like it’s me fighting me, hence civil war. 😁

  5. That was brilliant wasn't it. The players you mention above are all such natural footballers. Add daisy, paxy, bannon, heath and hanks (who has the one thing that only the best players have - time) and that is a significant core of highly skilled, hi footy iq players. I had more involuntary 'great kick' thoughts last night that I had all season with the men's team. Some brilliant weighted kicks to the forwards advantage. Including by Westy, my new favourite demon (accross all three teams) who last season could barely hit a target by foot. And some brilliant kicking for goal. How was that goal to Harris from the hand off by mitthen? The commentators didn't do that justice. Off one and a half steps, off balance, tackled and had to jink to her right and slightly kick on the outside of her foot. Nailed it from 40. Just fantastic.

  6. @deanox- deano-x or dean-ox? @Clint Bizkitis still my favourite culture merger. There’d be a whole generation of Demonlanders who have no idea what either references are now. We’re getting old! My surname isn’t Nash. Nasher was out of a game I used to play 25 years ago, and when I was an online gamer in my youth I started using it as an alias to my normal name when I wanted some anonymity, and for a brief period in the early 00s it became the alias I used everywhere. It has no relevance at all in my life now and this is the only presence where I still use it. End life story.

  7. @Salems Lot - what's yours a reference to? @Webber - I do think of bbq's and cooking!! Indeed - I do like my cooking. Not a naked chef though, but good food access the heart and souls of people. And when I was younger led to romantic encounters! It is probably a bit of my latent cheeky side - most peoples head goes to a certain place when they hear the word 'engorged'... The onion bit is a work reference... to peeling back the layers of the individual to appreciate their 'core'.

  8. Now that trade month is dusted and we need to wait us a few more weeks for some further hope cookies, I thought it might be the opportune time to start a new thread on something that has occupied my mind for the past six or so minutes. Usernames. Q1: have you misinterpreted other posters' usernames without reflection? (Follow up Q2: where and why and what and who did you derive your username from?) I’ll get the ball gently rolling. (First easy question though: do any of the many ‘Dr.s’ on Demonland hold a PhD. or practice medicine?) More specifically, on reflection. Nasher: always thought it was something to do with being an admin and gnashing teeth, but probably just someone having the surname Nash. Cassiew: read it as someone who considers themselves a nut, as in cashew. But likewise probably just a person named Cassandra, whose surname starts with ‘w’. Pennant St Dee: always read in my head as Pennant ‘Saint’ Dee. Pretty obviously refers to a street though, somewhere in Perth likely. Google says such a thing exists. mo64: A dude named Moe or referring to modus operandi 1964’? DubDee/Sydee/Edm. Is it music related? Always picture you all in the different rooms of a rave. binman: still can’t help but connect with the strident support of Oscar McDonald, as in Oscar the Grouch = bin-man. Name probably came about well before OMac ever walked into our club. Demonstone? Is this Demon-stone like something out of Game of Thrones, or Demon’s tone where he or she forgot the apostrophe? DeeSpencer: just assume is a huge fan of Jake Spencer like me.

  9. I always thought Jaded was a person whose name was Jade D. I know she got married recently, so I just assumed she took Mr No More's name as hers. She's actually one of my favourite posters with a nice mix of logic and passive aggressive (and sometimes downright aggressive, but never abusive) posts.

Also @deanoxcoz love lil Alex. And @Return to Glorycoz love Alan Partridge. Big LOLZ that @Skuithas folks believing his name is a portmanteau of skirt/suit. Who on god’s green earth would love a hybrid garment of clothing enough to adopt it as a username??? And even then, you’d go skorts, surely!

  14. The problem with mine is that there’s also @Heart Beats True who posts quite a bit, and often makes well considered points. It’s really annoying. I’m trying to build a reputation as the town [censored], and it’s killing my brand recognition.

  15. Yes, mine is a tip to all those MCC Officials (the Blue Coats in the old days), who stand at the gate preventing entry into the “members enclosure”, usually on the grounds of how you look. And, no matter how hard you plea your case that your collarless shirt or ripped jeans are state of the art designer fashion statements, I have never seen one of them back down. “Call them what you will sir, those jeans are ripped…….” These confrontations have always made me laugh! My avatar, is of course, the great John Cleese, during his “upper class twit of the year” phase. “I’ll let you draw your own conclusions there!!!! Anyway, a brilliant thread for this down time between seasons!!! Go Dees

  16. @Nasherit's definitely Dean-ox. Nickname started in highschool and has continued ever since, there might have been a bit of a David Schwartz reference in there originally as well given my love for the Dees at the time. @WalkingCivilWarsometimes I forget that's still my avatar, as it's the only one I've ever had. I had probably just read Clockwork Orange for the first time when I created my Demonland account all those years ago!

  17. I hear you Neverodd………. You can call the opposition whatever but once they pull on the Red and Blue they are ours, they may not be world beaters but they can be valuable to the overall team performance, you have to give people a chance to perform and our club and footy department the chance to iron the wrinkles out and restore confidence in their own ability, who knows what is possible??

  18. Schache is a low cost casino move. We gave up nothing really (future 4th rd) to bring him into the red and the blue. His potential and talent is obvious. It’s getting his heart and his head into the right place. We saw glimpses of him in games v Dees and he can be a real asset as a 2nd key forward or even as a defender. I think his natural game is forward of the Centre and his kicking for goal is generally excellent. He kicked 45 goals in the VFL last year. Whilst he could be the “new Weid/Mitch Brown replacement at Casey”, he could prove to be a very smart acquisition and be part of our success in ‘23. Fingers crossed that Goodie and co can turn him into the player that it was thought he could be.

  19. Really want to know the origin of yours, @Engorged Onion…...aroused cooking or something springs to mind! Mine I’m sad to say is my surname, just seemed appropriate to the internet. Boring.

  20. I figured @DubDee with the Jim Stynes photo was a reference to Dublin. @Skuit I think historically you have defined your name for someone who once asked? Skirt/Suit? @A F - my head goes to . something "as [censored]." Not sure of @WalkingCivilWarobscure reference... my head either goes to Guns N Roses song 'Civil Wa'r or Manic Street Preachers lyrics of "Divine Youth" - And I sing to myself, My civil wars within, The victories and failures, I daily lose and win..." @binman - I just imagine he is a hipster with a beard... but in reality is clean shaven. @WERRIDEE is stuck in Werribee.,, I do like how people really really try really really hard to wedge in a Demons reference into their handle...

  26. I'd definitely care. Along with @Whispering_Jack and @Demonland you're the engine of the site Nasher. I've made some very valuable lifelong friendships from Demonology/Demonland and the community has enhanced my life.

  27. I’ve thought about that a lot over the years too. I’ve been on Demonland for a really long time, but the only members I’ve ever personally spoken to are Andy and WJ, @Grapeviney, @Jaded No More, @old55 and @Slartibartfast, and all only fairly anecdotally, and a really long time ago in the case of the latter three. Nevertheless many of the usernames here feel familiar to me and I feel like I know the personality attached, even if it’s a mostly imagined one based on what they write. It’s a community here. We all know each other, even if it’s a very curated version of ourselves. Every now and again I’ll see an old thread where a name I haven’t seen in ages comes up, and I see they haven’t visited in years and I wonder what happened? Occasionally I also morbidly wonder if anyone on Demonland would know or care if I did die. Given I have no personal connection to anyone on here the news may never filter through. How depressing!

  28. Best subtle name change was Big_red_fire_engine (Broady) to @Lil_red_fire_engine(Bowser) late last year in the run towards the flag. The symbolism of letting go of the sad past and embracing the exciting new future couldn’t have hit the mark better for me. I believe he’d been BRFE since the Aimoo days too, so pre-2005.

  29. Not a phantom draft, but a pretty handy resource if you’re not across all of the prospects in the pool. The podcast also has some discussion on 2023’s draft pool and goes over the five standouts for next year (no surprise that Harley Reid gets a guernsey). 30. I always assumed @WERRIDEE was a clever link between the wastewater treatment plant, and the 50 odd years we spent as a club being a literal 💩 farm.

  31. The centre clearance and kick to Hore for the second goal were superb. I already knew getting Harris and Birch from other clubs on the cheap was great business but Purcell has been fantastic.

  32. Taking a ruck as early as pick 13 would surprise me as we already have two automatic selections for that position in Gawn and Grundy. I think we'd be more likely to pick up a developing big man at 37 or (even more likely) in the Rookie Draft. A tall forward or a speedy mid/HB with good disposal would be more of a need with our first pick IMO.

  34. Homer and Marge. Simpsons debuted in primetime in 1991. Minus 40 years, plus subtract a few for working memory: Calculate your age as 96? Of course I watched Warner Brothers cartoons. Sophie Lee alone is considered to have caused a $64 billion budget deficit due to workers rushing home.

  39. Mine is some of my initials. I thought, jeepers, ya dope, you probably shouldn't have most of your name in a public forum, hence changing it to not all my initials haha. Very boring story. And good memory @Salems Lot.

  40. Mine came about from horse racing DP. A mate’s horse was named Dan Zephyr and had a long run without success like the Dees, a few of us on here like to talk racing every now and then and it was one of them that suggested the name. Sounded apt at the time.

  43. Perfect win, 5 big outs, slippery humid conditions, travel, no worries. Just keep winning for a home final. With Adelaide playing the cats and Brisbane the pies two good 5 goal plus wins should see us on top! Go you good thing! On to the bombers! (Please, please, please smash them!)

  44. I really think he’s worthy of a chance elsewhere. Probably the Lions or Suns should definitely have a think given he’s a Queenslander. His pace and strength and run through the mid/wing is what is needed by clubs. He played good footy late in 2020. Unfortunately he was behind Langdon and Brayshaw and Jordon over the past 2 years. Now with Hunter coming in, Oskar is squeezed out. He was a key part of the AFL squad in 21 and the Casey VFL Premiership this year. Good luck Oskar. Sauce, you are a quality bloke.

  45. Demons3031 Childhood memories for me going to the footy with Dad in the old Bay 13 and Dad telling me all about John Beckwith (Captain) and Ron Barassi (Vice captain) - and seeing them both as heroes. I remember him once telling me to watch Beckwith kick the ball along the boundary line from the back pocket. but not be pinged for on the full - he was spot on. :)

  46. This is one area where we have little to no cover the bigger midfielder in the 192+ range since Clayton is the tallest at 187cm and resting on the HF line they create matchup problems for the opposition where small HB get out marked and tall HB don't have the agility.

  47. Unfortunately when a player is uncontracted then the club does not have the upper hand and has to accept less than they want for players and move on with other trades. Not many list managers have skills to do deals fast so they can get other deals done where the outcome is better. We did well with Brodie Grundy, Lachie Hunter and Josh Schache who are not out of their best window. In the end Pick 13 and 37 is good result for the club. Every one has lauded Geelong for getting Pick 7 but I don't believe they did so great with the personnel they got Tanner Bruhn 2 years in the system with most stats below-average, Ollie Henry 2 years in the system with most stats below-average and Jack Bowes 6 years in the system who played 5 games last year with most stats average and below-average for a middle of the table team and was on $800,000 per year, the premiers lost only Joel Selwood but are 1 year older the replacements they need in forward lines and rucks are older the midfield will depend on Dangerfield who has had injury riddled season lately where are the Cameron/Stengle/De Konig recruits of the previous years? Pick 7 may be a boom or a bust player since players rarely come to a club and perform straight away. Richmond on the other hand gained Jacob Hopper 7 years in the system with a injury riddled 2022 and Tim Taranto 6 years in the system with stats that are elite and above-averge, maybe they will have an injury free year for Martin and Pestia but they have no picks to speak of in the draft. Brisbane did well but some of the new recruits like Gunston who has a history of back troubles and Dunkley who threw a tantrum when he did not get enough midfield time the loss of McStay will only be known during the 2023 season, only time will tell. Collingwood have gained Daniel McStay, Tom Mitchell, Bobbie Hill and Billy Frampton, other than Mitchell none of the others have set the world on fire but I think the loss of Grundy is probably the worst decision they could have made, since Cameron and Cox are reasonable where as Grundy at his best is in AA class. Femantle may have sold the shop to get Jackson but got O'Meara for weets packets from Hawthorn, they also lost a forward and backup ruckman in Lobb, Acres, Tucker, Meek and Logue and have no picks in the draft until 30, Acres was given to Carlton for a future 3 round pick why? Sydney gained Francis from Essendon, did they improve?. I have watched football for over 70 years and I look forward to 2023 when the Demons get to raise the cup in the GF beating Richmond or Geelong.
