Petty is our best one grab marking key forward atm and a future regular best 22 player. Big, strong, young and talented, why on earth would we even consider moving him on.15 points

Good teams that are well coached are not put off by midfield depth. Like actually good depth as opposed to what some on here consider ‘depth’... If Goodwin can’t work it out, Adem Y should get a go late 2021. No time for screwing around - we have never had in my lifetime such midfield talent - to squander it or to trade it away because of ‘fit’ is absurd.8 points

Have you seen him play recently? Could be the worst footballer in the AFL. Genuine space cadet.6 points

I’m not sure this entirely fair, or accurate. Paul Roos hardly fits this category and he built a very good team around him during his time at the club. He was also instrumental in designing the process for selecting the next senior coach (his successor), and then actually selecting that coach (Goodwin). That said, I’m not yet convinced about Goodwin. I personally find it weird that I still haven’t worked out what I think of him as a coach (i.e. whether I think he’s a good coach or not). Friends who support other clubs ask me what Goodwin’s like as a coach - and my response is typically, “ ... to be honest, I dunno”. I’m not impressed with aspects I’ve observed about his coaching, such as his game day decisions, his use of players not in the most obvious positions, and his ability (well, failure) to get the list to consistently execute the game plan including fixing the forward line connectivity problems. Against this, the players seem to rate him, he receives a lot of compliments from former players (eg, Lewis, whose opinion I rate), and it seems the club’s hierarchy also rate him. There’s no doubt 2021 is a very big season for him though. I really hope he’s the real deal, but (like many here) I’m still on the fence.6 points

Just another 10 disposal player who won't make a shred of distance to our team. You don't see him for three quarters then he'll have a purple patch for 10 minutes. He's not what I'd call a quality role player who'll improve you.6 points

the higher pick you give up, the more the filth should pay give up a first rounder? pies should have a third of his salary going under their cap for the duration of the five years the fact that they only want to pay $100k of the rumoured $900k for 2021 and NOTHING after that for the remaining four years is a joke5 points

Ok, so getting back to footy... This is second hand info, passed onto me by someone who has spoken to family of players. Harmes has been chased by North this trade period. Roosy has been making a few calls to him trying to entice him over with his preferred role of being a run with/inside mid. Don't know how much he considered it, wasn't told, but Harmes had been pretty disappointed with Goodwin during the year for not communicating. He had a meeting with Goodwin yesterday and apparently put it all on the table a bit. Made it clear he wasn't happy with where the culture was at and that there was different rules for different players. Goody didn't agree with all of it but at least heard him out and it was apparently a pretty productive meeting. What's come out of that is Goody has told him he won't be traded and that next year he will go back to a run with role where he drifts forward. The feeling from the family member was that it was an improvement from what they've seen with Goody's listening and they put it down to mostly Richo's influence and possibly a bit of Yze's. Not exactly earth shattering news, but thought I'd pass on to try and get us back on track a bit.4 points

He would be behind Brown, Weid, Jackson and Fritsch. I'd even have Petty there ahead of him. He isn't changing anything at the club for us. Pass.3 points

I wouldn't go near him. there is a reason a team desperately trying to recruit players with speed and X-Factor has delisted a player with both of those things3 points

Wife barracks for Essendon and even with my MFC bias I couldn’t agree with this. Saad is better defensively and is more attacking I would suggest both are probably on par with their kicking. Salem is good but should be more damaging.3 points

I said more effective, not better. Frost definitely had a higher personal ceiling. But OMac plays his role in the team system much better. So even if Frost is a 20% better footballer than OMac, the team was a better team with OMac.3 points

The idea we lack youth is ridiculous. We currently have the following players 22 or under on our list: Luke Jackson Charlie Spargo Toby Bedord James Jordon Trent Rivers Aaron Nietschke Tom Sparrow Harry Petty Kysaiah Pickett Kade Chandler Austin Bradtke That is 11 players 22 or under, or a quarter of the list. Plus we will also likely add 3-4 in the draft this year, granted we may also lose 1 or 2 off the above list.3 points

Exactly. There is no need to trade any of our midfielders. Getting rid of Brayshaw would be stupidity of the highest order.3 points

That's correct. I think Oscar is borderline vfl, potentially even vfl reserves. That's just my opinion. Ive thought this for a long time and haven't waivered from my opinion. And i could name a dozen other players in country leagues that would be better. I think the fact that he's played 80 odd games is quite embarassing. And i'd much prefer a guy to make mistakes having a crack (ala Frost) than a guy making mistakes because he is indecisive and timid.3 points

We have them for top end midfield talent, but need to get more from that advantage. Their backline is clearly superior. May's the best defender of the group and Salem is up there but Wilkie, Clark, Carlisle, Howard, Paton, Coffield, Long are way better than our 3-7th defenders. They have 7 competent AFL defenders with a 2 talls, 2 mediums, 3 good smalls balance. Our best 7 defenders features probably 3 question marks. The forward line could be a similar tale where Ben Brown might be the most accomplished but Butler, King, Membrey et al form a far more consistent group. We need a little internal development to catch up and then we probably need a year adding a few pieces. I get the feeling we probably know that but we want to spend a year getting the cap in order and the coaching right before we try to fill holes.3 points

i think he'll be picked up as a dfa by another club he could easily play another 80-100 games at afl level; he's not old, he's not terribly skilled, and he clearly has his head screwed on right i did love the synchronicity of the brothers being picked up by the same club using the same draft pick and both of them being whipping boys in a backline that was - for the most part - under constant strain due to the inadequacies of those further afield3 points

This is no joke, I was in a meeting with a Labour powerbroker a few years back. He apologised as he had to take a call from the State Premier. The upshot of the call was that that funds were being allocated not to healthcare (as the powerbroker wanted) but instead to Kardinia Park redevelopment. The powerbroker challenged the Premier "How the F is that going to help the health of people in Geelong?", Premier's response "Mate, there's no votes in health".The powerbroker's response to that comment is unprintable.3 points

Treloar turns 28 in March 2021 so the 5 seasons left on his Pies contract covering his 28 to 32 year old seasons. He's had recent history of significant soft tissue injuries. His contract pays him above market terms based on his ability and recent availability and it runs for another 5 seasons till he turns 32. Hard to see how Pies can shift him unless they agree to cover ballpark $1,000,000 of his contract over remaining 5 years. Or a combination of Pies subsidy and Treloar agreeing to take a pay cut (Why would he?). Pies have next to no hand. Treloar can say no to a trade and force Pies to honour contract or tell them which Melbourne based club he has agreed to go to and with which they make a trade. Salary dumps are common in salary cap sports but a salary cap dump of a contract that has 5 seasons to run requires a special kind of stupid. What a salary cap cluster seemingly caused by above market contracts post 2018 Grand Final and unplanned for trading back in of Beams. The later requiring the disastrous extension for Treloar to push back money to fit Beams in. Overpayed Grundy and signed him till 2027 ie his 33 year old season. Pendlebury in 33 year old season in 2021 and I'd suspect he is still in upper echelon of player contracts despite being past his prime. Good luck Pies. OK. Not really.3 points

In the end the view was actually quite optimistic. Rendell stated that as we just missed the final 8, he sees improvements and the stars in our midfield are still only in their early to mid 20s and heading into their prime. SOS saw our two-way running as the key weakness and Damien Barrett saw our port delivery into the forward 50 as a key issue. In terms of game plan and execution, they are both correct.2 points

Just to explain further here because of @DeeZones shocked face: OMac has played over 80 games putting him in the top 15% of most games ever played for the MFC. So is the arguement that only 1 in 5 playeras who have pulled on the guernsey are AFL Standard? And if so how do you define AFL Standard, if it isn't defined as someone who played more AFL games than most players who ever get drafted?2 points

Marty Hore is also a player who can play on talls and smalls. Missed all 2020 with injuries but was a shining light in a poor 20192 points
-
Wasn't me who said that. I wouldn't have Hunt or melksham in our b22. We are shocking by foot going inside 50, we shoukd be going hard at phillips. Or polec. Hunt has been at the club for 7 years now. He is what he is, handy depth but that's it. Smith shouldn't have been given another contract2 points
-
I always get confused by this type of statement. There are 18 teams, so a minimum of 396 players are by definition AFL standard. Assuming "AFL Standard" alao includes at least some of the reserve players who are in the teams in each week due to injury then there are say 450 AFL Standard players in the comp. Do you mean "a player who would make the best 22 of a top 4 club"? Because even that would depend on list need. How do you judge that?2 points

The $100k offered each year by the Pies, is totally insignificant. If that is all they will pay, he is staying put.2 points

Good post. I like this. I'd hold Viney forward and get him to attend forward stoppages and play pressure forward otherwise. I think we can get this balance right.2 points

Ah thanks for clearing that up. Makes sense to me, I think we all saw the Harmes back experiment failed. I do think we need another HBF though. May, Lever, Salem, Rivers, Hibberd, are backline locks with Hib near the end. Tomlinson will play a role, making 6. You need 7 in the 22, and preferably another couple. Lockhart doesnt have a contract yet. Unless we think Hore or Smith could adapt to whatever Harmes role was, we have a hole. I actually think this is a bigger hole for us than the wing, because when Hib goes we've got 2 spots and no one pushing through, while a few players can push onto the wing defensively if needed. It may be a reason Neita has been persisted with: no game development but has a 21 year olds body, not an 18 year olds so may slot in quicker. I always thought Harmes looked good on the HFF, with good hands overhead and an ability to find a bit of space. So the Harmes/Petracca swap @MadAsHell suggested sounds good.2 points
-
If we're looking to have Petracca play the Dustin Martin role of splitting his time between the midfield and forward line, Harmes could be the guy to interchange him with. Start each game with Harmes forward and trac in the middle. When they switch Harmes can then clamp down on an oppositions best midfielder at the time. That allows us to then have Oliver, Brayshaw and Viney rotate amongst the other two midfield spots and potentially have short shifts in the forward line also.2 points

I've said this before, if you're coming on a football fan forum and you're not taking every single thing you read with a grain of salt, you've only got yourself to blame. and if you're getting upset or annoyed at posters for getting it wrong, grow up. I almost never share the intel i get on the public forum anymore because it's genuinely not worth the BS that comes with it.2 points
