  1. Been watching a few clips lately like most and came across this the other day. Remembering the good bits. Round 2, 2004.

  2. I'm still undecided but while there are over half a million cases in the USA with over one thousand deaths every day it's way too early to think about something as peripheral as a contrived football season. Let's have a look in a month and then think about it. To have games when it is illegal for two children to kick a ball in the park is not the right message. Like many I cannot help but think that the willingness of sports to restart is motivated by money rater than any altrustic desire to provide entertainment in these difficult times.

  3. Despite the Covid-19 situation and its attendant angst, I find myself feeling less stressed than how I would normally be when following the mighty Demons each week. That could be a reflection on myself, the team, or possibly both. I"m probably very much in the minority on this forum, but I wouldn't mind terribly if there's no footy this year.

  4. Glenn was a gun of a player, if he had of been on the ground weekly he would be considered a legend of the club

  5. 2006 we lost twice to Carlton who only won 3 games for the season. Win those two and we finish top 4 and dont have to travel to Perth for the semi final.

  6. https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/victorian-premier-daniel-andrews-feels-afl-still-some-time-off-resuming-20200412-p54j5u.html Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has quashed any talk of the AFL following the lead of the NRL and restarting its competition any time soon. Andrews announced on Sunday the state of emergency in Victoria will be extended until at least May 11, meaning strict enforcement of social distancing and isolation measures remain in place to slow the spread of coronavirus.

  7. Johnno had a very good 2nd half. One of only two players to join the no-merger movement in 96 and easily lands in my all time fav Demons. All class.

  8. It's nice to see so many things differently to today. Umpire calling ball-up as soon as the ball is locked in, not waiting 10-15 seconds to see if it breaks free of the scrum. Umpires not afraid to pay free kicks to keep the game moving. Alternatively umpires also not afraid to let it go to keep the game moving. And of course, not being able to hear the umps! I reckon one of the first times I heard the umps micd up was the 1989 Panasonic Cup Final vs Geelong. It offered minimal insight then and not much has changed 30 years on.

  9. Agree... That of course was the year Collingwood broke their premiership drought. There was no outstanding team and it was ours for the taking.

  10. 1998 we really struggled through the middle of the season. Had heaps of injuries and then when the senior men came back in we strung a few together towards seasons end and the final game of the season we were comfortably in the 8 but a chance for 4th if we could beat the Tigers, who were playing for a spot in the finals. We smoked them, the Bombers got 8th, the Tigers finished in their then usual spot of 9th and we ended up 4th. Unfortunately under that finals system it didn't carry the same advantages as the present system. We were stiff in 98 - we were the only team to beat the eventual Premiers in that finals series. 1990 was our year and really the one we let slip. We won 16 games - a very high number to finish only 4th (in the final year of the old final five) and but for a terrible hiding we got against North Melbourne we would have been outright second. We beat Essendon (top) twice; we beat the Eagles in Perth; we beat Hawthorn in successive weeks including the Elimination Final, to end their run of successive GF's (1983-1989, then back in 1991) and we had ended Collingwood's finals series in 1988 and 1989. We really were probably the best side in the comp in 1990 but a shocking performance in the semi final against the Eagles, after the enforced week off because of the Collingwood/Eagles draw and an injury during training to our 1990 Band F G.Lyon, ended any hopes of the breakthrough. Northey was a great coach but I reckon he'd think 1990 was really the one that got away. Of our 5 consecutive years of finals under him, I think we maxed ourselves out in all of them but 1990.

  11. i'm tending to thinking the same. any games this year will seem unnatural, unsatisfactory and uninteresting, and more to do with money than football. i'd rather watch classic replays.

  12. This is a misrepresentation of the truth I think, remember he chose Carlton of all places. So if " tanking" ( and lets not forget at the time it was accepted and industry wide) was his big issue then of all clubs Carlton would have been his least preferred. Brock was rejected for the captaincy, had lost pace and wasnt being offered the size of the contract he wanted.

  13. Gotta be The Wiz, but Glenn Lovett was another very talented player who was cruelled by injuries.

  14. I used to think that but the Bailey/Neeld years broke me. Now I leave whenever I feel like it. Funny thing, when I was a kid at the footy with my dad and uncle they'd always want to leave at the 20 minute mark of the last quarter to beat the traffic, even when we were winning! I couldn't comprehend it as a kid and it still doesn't make sense to me now

  17. I think we may have lost Neitz on the morning of that final against Essendon too- he plays, we’d probably win. With that’s said we were a step below Saints, Lions and Power that year. Geelong we’re running hot in the right time of the year too. 04, 05 and 06 were pretty similar stories; each year we faded badly in the final rounds and limped into the finals.

  18. 2004 and 2006 a complete waste, always faded against the better teams, eg W.C, Crows, Syd.

  19. Funny how we remember things differently. My recollection of 'Dirty' Williams is that he was a clever player who used the ball well, but never got a lot of it in the first place - more of an opportunist, I suppose, than a stats accumulator.

  20. Yeah we were 2nd or 3rd after round 16 1988 after smashing the Pies off the G and then lost 5 in a row. Had to beat Carlton in round 22 to sneak into the 5, had we lost the Bombers would've played finals. We lost to some average teams in 88 too, Saints at Moorabbin (wooden spooners), Richmond late in the season, Bulldogs and Swans at the G. I reckon we did the same thing throughout the Northey years too, there was always a run of games mid-late season that cost us a double chance. Actually a similar thing happened in 94 too under Balme, can't remember about 98.

  21. 88 was similar if I recall in that we won the first 8 plus and then cratered but we recovered to sneak into the six? and then we all know what happened from there I was in Europe for the first six odd weeks of the season and was amazed when in the Qantas lounge in Singapore on the way home to read of our success. Definitely no internet cafes in those days

  24. Yeah ok cool....Ill have New Zealand. Yeah every time i bet in Hong Kong the 129/1 shot beats the 1.70 by 2 lengths.....but ill pay a bit more attention to the form today.

  25. Those 2 often boot home 5 or 6 winners on any given raceday and if you had advanced knowledge of which ones were going to win then you'd win enough money to buy an island in the Pacific. Which would be more than handy right now! Favourites get beaten more often than not though Wadda so it's buyer beware. I prefer the 2 leg multi with the shorties ... smaller outlay but to win more. Or just do an exacta (some prefer the quinella or trifecta)

  26. I suspect that the resolution for the NRL will be the CEO losing his job. It is clear that he has alienated Government and his media backers. Hard to see him continuing in his job. This is one time when sports need to follow rather than lead.

  27. Thanks Macca. Ive had a bit of a look in the past and i noticed Jose & Zac saluted in a fair few of the races. It seems a good strategy to follow and your putting approach is sound. Im at home today, surprise surprise, so ill have a bit of a look. Good luck!

  28. The NRL have shown themselves to be an absolute disgrace in their push to start early. Let's hope the AFL don't keep pushing down this line. There should be no favours given to elite sport. FOX are desperate to get sport back on and Rupert more often than not gets what he wants. Let's hope the government stand their ground and our sporting leaders don't out themselves above the rest.

  29. How well has the game evolved in 32years??? Watching the game the ball movement when executed correctly when u consider the wet conditions moved quickly. Coaches box only had the coach & a couple of assistants vs 15 now, are they over complicating it now ???

  30. Strawbs had a fantastic 88, I've been rewatching a lot of games from that year and he was one of our best. In fact after round 22 when he got reported, Scotty Palmer told Morphett or Landy (can't remember which) that Melbourne insiders thought he was our best chance for the Brownlow that year.

  31. I follow Purton & Moreira because those 2 premier jockeys are often on the best 2 horses in any given race of the 10 or 11 race card ... but not always. So I first of all evaluate which of their mounts can win and then do a series of 2/5 exacta's. Or if the odds are too short I default to the 2Pick multi. And there's usually 1 or 2 horses in any given race (not ridden by Purton & Moreira) that also can win. So you've got to do your form Wadda But 2 horses that should win tomorrow are R4 No.2 Good View Clarico (Purton) & R6 No.5 Colonel (Purton) Both are even money (or maybe 6-4) so the 2Pick multi works better ... 5-1 combined odds with a boost. Odds not up until lunchtime tomorrow so both could easily tighten in the market. I get the odds and tips from the following web sites Hong Kong Form Hong Kong Odds Hong Kong Tips

  32. Tuned in at a good time. It seems players did everything better back then. Picking the ball up cleanly in greasy conditions, none of this fumble fest we see these days. Players using both feet really well. A much better spectacle than today.

  33. Brock McLean . Another lost chance to develop a player into a champion. Colin Sylvia the same. We drafted well but couldn't improve them. Cam Bruce and Brad Green were no better at the end of their respective careers at the dees than when they started in 2000. Let's hope Tracc, Gus and Clarrie get a chance to become the champions they should be.

  35. The Melbourne Football Club has a rich history in the ranks of the VFL/AFL so while this season has been disrupted by the pandemic, we decided to delve back into our past to bring you the players and the numbers they wore on the backs of their jumpers (qualification - 1 game for the club’s senior team) starting this week from 1 to 10: Number 1 1912 William Allan (No. 9, 1913; No. 19, 1914) 1913 Douglas Chapman 1914 Des McDonald/Carlyle Kenley (No. 22, 1913) 1915 Johnny Hassett (No. 34, 1913) 1919 – 1923 William Allan (see 1912 above) 1924 – 1931 Stan Wittman 1932 Leo Nolan 1933 Noel Barnett 1934 Col Niven (No. 10, 1933; No. 2, 1935) 1935 – 1940 Gordon Jones 1941 Stan 'Pop' Heal 1942 Keith 'Bluey' Truscott (No. 5, 1937 – 1940) 1943 Keith Shadbolt/Don Hooper (No. 18, 1932 – 1935) 1944 Ron Kimberley (No. 21, 1939 – 1941)/Jack Compton 1946 – 1947 Ern Rowarth (No. 33, 1945) 1948 James Mitchell (No. 37, 1946 – 1947) 1948 – 1956 Denis Cordner (No. 17, 1943) 1957 – 1959 Dick Fenton-Smith 1961 Bruce Leslie 1963 Garry Byers (No. 50, 1962) 1964 – 1967 Robert Foster 1968 – 1972 Max Walker (No. 46, 1967) 1974 – 1981 Garry Baker 1984 – 1985 Steven Smith (No. 35, 1974 – 1983) 1988 – 1991 Steven O’Dwyer (No. 32, 1987) 1993 – 1994 Adrian Campbell 1995 – 1997 Sean Charles (No. 44, 1992 – 1993; No. 18, 1994) 1998 – 1999 Jamie Shanahan 2003 – 2005 Chris Heffernan 2006 – 2009 Simon Buckley 2010 - 2011 Matthew Warnock (No. 37, 2006-2009) 2015 - 2018 Jesse Hogan 2019 - Steven May Number 2 1912 Harry Brereton (No. 7, 1915) 1913 Algernon Millhouse 1914 William Quinn 1915 Percy Rodriguez 1919 – 1920 Eric Tonkin 1921 – 1924 Joe Flanagan 1925 Clarrie Wyatt 1928 PB ‘Barney’ Wood 1929 – 1934 Wyn Murray 1934 Joe Kinnear (No. 17, 1932; No. 15, 1933; No. 36, 1935; No. 6, 1936 – 1937 1935 Colin Niven (No. 10, 1933; No. 1, 1934) 1936 – 1939 Lou Reiffel 1939 – 1940, 1942 – 1946 Roy Dowsing 1947 David Newman 1948 – 1955 Robert McKenzie Snr 1958 – 1963 Alan Rowarth 1966 – 1967 Robert Stewart 1968 Robert Dowsing (No. 38, 1966 – 1967) 1969 – 1970 Denis Clark (No. 38, 1968; No. 17, 1971 – 1975) 1971 – 1972 Robert D. 39. The commentators mentioned that Jimmy had changed out of his no. 11. Not sure why, maybe it got ripped or something. Can't understand why the Eagles weren't in white shorts that day. It's also glaring how the 'deliberate out of bounds' rule wasn't enforced very often in those days.

  40. I think it was in the first game the following season that he busted his foot and lost any pace he ever had. ? EDIT: Brock McLean that is, not Hogan2014's unfortunate son.

  41. He was at AFL level. He was very talented at country level as I said.

  42. Wasn't he part of some deal involving Gasper? I vaguely recall some amusing connection.

  44. I'm a Furphy fan, it's not a special beer but it goes back easy enough and doesn't break the bank. I'm happy they've got on board and the club should be congratulated for continuing to bring in support.

  45. Mate, you should stop shouting down posters and offering absolutely sfa as a counterpoint. Let it go, it's tiresome

  47. Lol, that's funny mfm. I'll bet good 'ole vijay and his partners and executives (plus all the bureaucratic leeches), grab most of that customer moolah and their employees get the dregs at the bottom of the barrel anyway.........but when it suits him he uses his downtrodden employees as sympathy fodder.... but you believe what you want

  48. Foolishly, I'll bite. If analysing the number of cases through time isn't an informative way to model a health crisis, can you suggest what might be? Call me crazy, but I'd suggest that the world's leading medical scientists might actually be somewhat clever, and have a better grasp of their models than random posters on a footy forum. Also, you're truly delusional if you think the economic impacts were in any way avoidable. Governments don't tank economies for fun.

  49. The people who signed up in March and April are legends. Well done people. Every member is solid gold for the survival of the club. (appreciate that many are losing their jobs and can't afford to continue) Very proud of our supporters.
