Today's wrap: Upgrading a NQR defender who is borderline best 22 when everyone is fit, and who constantly breaks team rules and structures but is exciting, for a top 5-10 player who is only 23 and fills a specific need, for the equivalent cost of ~pick 52. Today was a win.17 points

I don't know why anyone has any issues. We have gained Langdon, Tomlinson, and still have a pick in each of the first three rounds for this year and 2020 For Frost15 points

Super deal. So, for those keeping count: We let go of Frost and landed Langdon for a bit of a shuffle with late picks and moving back 4 spots in this years second round. Very happy with that.14 points

So right now as we sit, we have, Pick 3, 26, 50 + Langdon and Tomlinson. A great trade period so far from Mahoney.13 points

Welcome to the club Ed! He's EXACTLY what we need. I've been a fan for a few years, and he is one of the best wingmen in the AFL. Statistically, he is virtually identical to Brad Hill, actually edges him slightly, and we got him for a sliver of the cost AND he's only 23. He could be one of our best trade ins we've had in a long long time.12 points

* Letting go of Sam Frost - does it leave us thin? - they don't think so, expect lever & may and oscar to have full pre-season and play all year * Understand fans will be surprised but we have lots of players that can play that role. * May & Lever can play tall lockdown and mobile defender role * Viewed the Langdon & Frost Trade as a package * Ed Langdon - Langdon & Tomlinson bring running power, brings in a need we needed to address, pacy wingmen * Won't explore small forward role in the trade period. believe our forward line in 2018 was good enough and hope it can do it again in 2020. * Having those wingmen adds flexibility to midfield to not have to play midfielders on wing who can now go to half forward or half back * Won't look at Brad Hill as the "other club" * Asked about Braydon Preuss - see him as an important back up player. Have had enquiries about him but he will stay. * Brayshaw - Freo briefly enquired and we were emphatic that he stay. * Doesn't sound like there will be any more changes in the coaching staff * Burgess started today.12 points

I have completely the opposite view. Our team doesn’t play better because we ‘won’ 2 different trades, we play better because we improved our team overall over the period. The deals are not isolated, they are part of a bigger picture. For instance, everyone was filthy that we paid 25 for Melksham early, and the quickly got 29, 50 and Kennedy for Howe and Toumpas. This place was an absolute nightmare during that time because we were always pushovers etc. Then we used that pick 29 to help us go from pick 6 into pick 3 and 10, before using one of the picks we got back to turn pick 10 into pick 7. And then everyone thought we were geniuses. But we needed the extra second round pick to make those other deals happen, plus time to do the deals, so we took the hit on that trade to do it quickly and cam out as big winners overall. The point is, the trades don’t exist in a vacuum, so it’s short sighted to look at the in isolation.11 points

Couldn’t be happier with the way the club is going about this trade period so far. Absolutely ecstatic to have Langdon on board. Damn this club!!! They are sucking me back in again as usual!11 points

Shish...we all see what we want to see. I see Frost for Langdon. With some minor drops in minor picks which with smart selections won't matter. How is that not a massive win. We lose a player in a position we have 5 players on the list for and pick up a player who has something we are desperate for. Pick 22 downgrade to 26 this year in a dud draft where we might have our eyes on a player at 22 who would still be there at 26 so no loss. Pick 42 to pick 50 in a dud draft. A pick is only worth what player you get with it. These picks will be a lottery anyway. We might end up with a better player at 50 than 42. I'm not concerned with this one. Next years second rounders. We give up ours for Langdon and get back Hawks which should be a higher pick than ours next year. Win, win and win. That's what I see10 points

Surely we have some sort of deal already worked out with GWS, otherwise what was the point of them moving down to pick 6.10 points

I just take the view that the trade period isn’t a competition. You go there with your objectives, find clubs that have the opposite objective, shake hands and get it done. No winning or losing, just those who got it done and those who didn’t. I think if every list manager took the view that his or her job was to squeeze every tiny drop out of value out of each individual trade and be as big a tightarse at possible, there would be a lot more “get stuffed ya bastards” type rug pulling like we saw with St Kilda and old mate Bellend. Nothing would get done. The whole thing works on mutual goodwill.9 points

To be fair, Hogan didn't play at all in the final few games and then in any of our finals. We showed that we could function quite well without him.9 points

If you’re one of the plebs that are upset Frost is gone, you’re not allowed to be happy we landed Langdon.8 points

2019 sucked the life out of me unlike any season before, but a few shocking list decisions have kick started my heart and I am back. Bring on 16th place next year I say.8 points

This is why I like Josh Mahoney, he looks at the big picture. Happy to take what's probably a loss on the Frost deal to get a win on the Langdon deal. Staying in both this and next year's 2nd round is a big win8 points

Good to see you’ve returned to your comfy old position of waiting for the sky to fall Clint. I was a bit worried last year that you might have accidentally seen the ray of sunshine peeking out from the clouds. ❤️8 points

I was told at the midpoint of the season we would delist him if no takers. This is a big win.8 points

Another great deal! We move down 4 spots in the 2nd round but also snag Langdon also and still having a future 2nd round.8 points
-
If the future second rounder goes to Freo for Langdon it’s impossible to see how this isn’t a great result.8 points

Asked for more info, was told they are still trying, but it comes down to a waiting game, as so many trades are being held up and the likelihood of this one is dependent on others moving first. also didn’t rule out speaking to other taller forwards, but unsure if they are really serious about getting one unless it is the one they want (possibly not interested in a short term solution).7 points

Mahoney made a great trade here. Bell is clearly difficult to work with, he turned down 6 + 2020 3rd for Hill from the Saints when they gave him a deadline and now the Saints have split the pick with GWS they will be miles apart on that trade and Hill is in contract. Meanwhile our business is done with Freo.7 points

Where is the poster who said we haven’t done anything and Saints and Carlton are killing it. They have done nothing and we are the only club who has done the 2 trades predicted.7 points

Explain to me how you would have got a better deal than we got? Most on here were expecting at best to lose 22. We didn't, we went down 4 spots and instead they get what hopefully will be a worse pick for them if we improve on 17th, in a worse draft. Please explain how we could have done better getting a good player?7 points

Fantastic deal. Waiting for all the moaners to say we got shafted and that Langdon is slow and can’t kick in 3...2...1...7 points

Pathetic post, stereotyping. You know absolutely nothing about me or my background, if you did you'd understand how ridiculous your comments were about me, my parents and Grandparents are. I've seen and lived poverty mate, but it pales into insignificance to what my parents and grandparents went through. Absolute garbage7 points

Mahoney might threaten to go to all the other suitors for Frost. Oh, that’s right, how many other suitors are there? We’ll get what we can, we don’t have any cards. Strange isn’t it, with so many here thinking Frost is such a good player his services aren’t more in demand. Mahoney shouldn’t bluff. Get the deal done and move on. We need the list space and we have no cards.7 points

So this deal turns out to be Frost and small downgrades to our 2nd and 3rd for Langdon. Shut up and take my money!6 points

Hogan was part of that forward line so the answer doesn't carry a lot of weight... Maybe we have another tall forward in mind. ????6 points

No idea if we're done or not, but so far: The in's; Tomlinson, Langdon, pick 26, Pick 50, R2 2020, R4 2020, The out's; Frost, Pick 22, Pick 42, Pick 61, Pick 79, R2 2020, R4 2020 Net effect: Ins: Tomlinson Langdon Pick 26 Pick 50 Outs: Frost Pick 22, Pick 42, Pick 61 Pick 79 4 in, 5 out. Maybe splitting pick 3 will be the balancing item?6 points

Can someone please tell me where I am misreading this situation: 1. We made a preliminary final in 2018 with Frost & McDonald in the key defensive posts, both of whom (according to Demonland experts) are apparently so useless they are not worthy of being on an AFL list. 2. Despite paying roughly $1.5M to Lever & May in 2019, neither played a full game before round 12 and both were either injured or incompetent for most of the remainder of the season. Lever, in addition to his woeful B&F result, played in a grand total of zero wins for the year. 3. Frost played every game for the year, finishing top 10 in the B&F, in a career best season. He was our best defender by the length of the Bathurst straight. 4. We keep May & Lever and their big fat contracts, and resign such luminaries as Josh Wagner, but can't find the money and list space to keep Frost. You couldn't make this stuff up if you tried.6 points

This. Everyone should read this and move on with their misery. We wanted Frost gone. Just like we wanted Watts and Hogan gone. Make no mistake, we don’t lose players we want to keep because of money. We can afford to pay. We just choose not to.6 points
-
Big loss for us. If May and Lever can't get on the park again this year and O. McDonald becomes our main key defender then it will be a disaster.6 points

What a pathetic and uneducated post. Give yourself a right hook to the face and walk yourself out.6 points

I happened to be listening to Nick Dal Santo on Trade Radio earlier this morning and he went through the picks from 15 onwards in all drafts from 2008-2016. Very few of them end up playing 100 games and forging reasonable careers. It was 1 in 5 or something along those lines. I think known quantities to fill specific needs is the ideal scenario, once outside the top 10-155 points

Lever (and May) have cost us big time. 2 first rounders, King (GC) and Frost; and an chest full of $$. Geelong worked Lever out in his first game for memory, by getting a first gamer to isolate him one-on-one. I don't hope Frost sticks it up us; he will stick it up us. Clarko is an absolute genius. He is getting a robust guy, entering his prime, with elite speed that can pinch hit ruck, WING and to a lesser extent forward....for what...a late 2nd round draft pick next year? Hawks make the 8 next year comfortably. Frost and September are made for each other. I will be looking at twitter when Goody gets the RRRs in the next year or 2. Frosty might have a Maloney type message for him. Gave supreme effort. Provided solitary speed. Was a bonefide top 5 player this year....who just managed to double Jordan Lewis' voting in the B&F. pTGR5 points
