  8. What is true is that we will have the power to decide. If they want it, it needs to be a juicy offer. If they expect Green to be bid on at 4, then they either need 3 or 4. So our strategy without pick split should see us with Anderson (2) or maybe Young (3). This is definitely to our benefit, particularly if we have Langdon, Tomlinson and Elliot all inbound all for the cost of one second rounder. We get to decide how this plays out, and if we are not getting ‘overs’ we can say “no thanks”. We also have the option of future round picks, although from GWS you would expect them all to be late in each round, and this could also be an interesting strategy to consider into the mix.

  9. Below quotes from Elliott’s interview with 3AW. Considering Collingwood are still in the running, sounds fair enough to me. “I’ve always said that I’m going to wait until the end of the year to negotiate anything,” Elliott told Sportsday. “I felt like I needed to get back and play some good footy, missing a whole year last year.” Asked if he was chasing a long-term deal (which he’s been linked with at other Melbourne-based clubs), Elliott said that would be “great”. “But I’ve got this week to focus on and potentially a week after that,” he said. “All my focus is on this week.”

  10. Elliot was just on 3AW his desire is to be able to run through the middle or wing at times. He was non comital when Lloyd pushed him about staying at Collingwood beyond this year.

  12. You really think Frost has an upside with a bullet? He may have some incremental improvement left (eg he might improve his kicking a bit) but he has well and truly reached his ceiling Inside info? He's 26 or some such and has been in the system for 7-8 years. Its not as if he has been hiding under a bushell.

  14. UH I think what has confused a lot of people who have never taken any notice of Tomlinson before last weeks game was seeing him used as a ruckman. We have an acknowledged need for outside run and we target this bloke. I do not see the strategy. He does not look overly quick or play with the precision we are so desperate for..

  15. Assuming GC get priority pick 2 and our first pick is pick 3. GWS really have to deal with us if they want to do get ahead of any bid for Green because we can bid for him at 3, but they would need to really want the player they can get with pick 3 to do a split deal. Assuming GWS get a 2nd round compo for Tomlinson at around say pick 35 that gives them (to be confirmed): 12 (1268), 16 (1067), 35 (522), 52 (259), 76 (0) If GWS do nothing MFC bid on Green at 3 (2234), GWS have to pay 80% of that with the discount = 1787 That means they'll need to give 12 and 16 and get a pick back in change: 12 + 16 = 1268 + 1067 = 2335 And get change: 2335 - 1787 = 548 which is pick 34 If they do nothing they get: Green, 34, 36, 53, 76 So to get Green they give up 12 and 16 but get 34 back. If GWS do the pick split They get their man at 3 and then Green is bid on at 4 (2034) they still need to find 1627 points to pay for him. 35 + 52 only give them 522 + 259 = 781 They need to find 1627 - 781 = 846 more points which is equivalent to pick 22 So in reality to make the pick split pay they need both pick 3 AND pick 21 off us. They are going to have to give big time to get both those picks of us. That's why I've been suggested about 12 + 16 + Caldwell for 3 + 21. This pick split deal would give GWS: 3, Green, 76 because they need to use 21 + 35 + 52 on Green So to get pick 3 and Green they would give up 12, 16, Caldwell, 35 and 52 - like I said - they'd need to really want pick 3

  17. At the moment it seems that if Wayne Carey was in his prime and wanting to join Melbourne that most of the board would go into meltdown about paying him 800k a year.

  19. I posted this else where but thought it deserved it’s own topic Well boys, we knew this day was coming a long time ago and we've come to terms with it. Truth is Dec was a bit over football anyway, to be putting in all that blood, sweat and tears to not be playing regular senior footy isn't easy. That being said, the family and I will be forever grateful to the Melbourne Football Club for giving Dec the chance to live out his life long dream, and he got that chance on a sunny afternoon at the MCG. Not only that, but they won a close game, and himself having an impact on that result (his centre clearance for those who remember) He and us will never forget it. To everyone at Demonland, since I first started posting here 5 years ago when Dec started playing some decent footy at Casey, thank you for all your kind words. I have had a great time being able to share this experience with super passionate supporters which are sometimes hard to find. I have sincerely enjoyed the conversations and experiences I've had over the years and I'll be sure to pop back in ever now and again as I now and will always bleed Red and Blue. Dec's career wasn't the most glamorous by any stretch but only a very small percentage of people who ever play our beloved game get to say they played in the AFL. Cheers everyone, and have a drink on me!

  21. Good luck Bull. Showed plenty of courage and commitment, and sad to see you go. I remember that maggot Rance sticking the knees into Bull’s back and putting him out for an extended period. Never had a solid run at it.

  23. Yeah so true. If Dangerfield has another poor game by his standards then I don't rate his as a footballer. What he's done in finals in previous years means nothing ey SWYL..

  24. what he did 2 years ago is irrelevant now, but what he didn’t do on Saturday concerns me. GW$ almost played a man down

  25. That was the 8th final he's played in if that's the only criteria, and he was probably GWS's best in the 2017 prelim.

  27. I do not know. One would think that our poor season and the negative perception of the club would not attract an experienced player who is looking at joining a successful team. After years of playing for one of the power clubs with a culture of success, the Dees don't stack up well. You have to have a very good reason to leave the Hawks.

  28. Down at Collingwood they call Elliott ‘Basil’ so he could well be the player D11 was speaking about.

  29. Smith has a few years left. And his body is good. He has great leadership qualities and is a very good outside or link player. I think he would be great at Melbourne as he has the qualities that we need. He may be past his best but he is still head and shoulders above many in our best 22. However, comments in the Hawks camp suggest that he was interested in a trade but now his preference is to remain at the Hawks. Perhaps influenced by lack of offers or unfavourable contract terms on offer but also a reluctance to move so late in his career and leave his mates. The desire to be a one club player still resonates with some players.

  30. GWS winning again makes this option less appealing now. We’d wind up with picks 12 and 16 at this stage. I’d rather just keep pick 2/3 and head to the draft.

  31. You've already conceded you don't know the structure of contracts so even if he is on $2M over 4 years, he might be heavily front loaded and getting $200k in the 4th year when we need the cap space. Do those maths.

  32. Anyone but Geelong. That smug [censored] Dangerfield holding up the cup will just about do it for me. Thank god I'm leaving the country on GF eve. I'll be getting drunk on $2 cocktails in Thailand instead of watching the game.

  34. No comparison rjay. One, yes they were hit hard by injury. But not as hard as us. Two, they had a good preseason so fitness was not an issue as it was for us (and as I and others have pointed out it's the combination of those 2 factors that really creulled our season). Three they have much greater depth. I don't think they had any players lining up who started the season in an under 18 comp or working on the docks. Four, they are an older, more seasoned team with an age profile that means their players are better able to cope with the impact and demands of an AFL season that goes deep into finals.

  35. Having barely missed a game for a the last four years in a team that has made finals in each of those years. The same people who think we shouldn't get him based on one game probably salivate over highlight videos of prospective draft picks.

  36. Good idea dp. I won't be able to make it, but my queries are: 1. Joel Smith did not play all year after being left on the ground in a practice match clearly injured. Convince me this was not incompetence on the part of coaches/medical team. 2. Steven May turned up to the club unfit/overweight and missed more games this year than his last five years. How are we preparing both returning players this year and trade-ins/draftees alike given May was clearly not informed on expectations before arrival. 3. How was an even more immature forward line than last year with the loss of Hogan and Weideman part time allowed to be run under a first year line coach for as long as it was? In fact, what was the basis for giving Rooke the gig in the first place, I'd have expected a more experienced coach for a less experienced forward line. 4. If the board was forewarned before the season commenced that our pre-season was disastrous with respect to lack of fitness, why were the members not given ANY indication of this. Short term revenues gain from more members, upgraded membership categories including gf guarantees etc will now be more than offset next year with reduced memberships next year because we've got a board that are evidently not transparent and honest with their members. 5. Give me an example where we tried a Plan B in a game that wasn't going well.

  37. We have a vacancy for a strategy coach. Yze is coming from being the strategy coach for one of the best strategical teams in the comp under one of the best strategical coaches in AFL history. People can have whatever reasons they wish, but that's the reason he's being sought out by the club for the current vacancy.

  38. Here's a well written article in today's Guardian on Chris Scott. It contains the following paragraph which is apposite to our coach. "The language emanating from football clubs these days is softer, almost mystical. The days of the autocratic, raving lunatic driving a team towards a premiership are thankfully long past. You’d lose your young players if you carried on like that now. You’d probably have the police at your door. These days, many of the senior coaches speak like yoga instructors. Along with their players, they’ve embraced mindfulness and meditation. The key words at football clubs are “connection” and “vulnerability”. It’s the antitheses of how the previous generations of Australian men were raised, taught and coached. It’s refreshing, and it clearly works. 39. There is absolutely no way that Goodwin will leave Melbourne to take over at Adelaide for 2020. 100% not going to happen. I seriously question the mental capacity of posters that think this might happen.

  40. He would only go if he didn't have the confidence in the list and his coaching team to make finals next year. The heat will be on in 2020. However, I just can't imagine Goodwin leaving the Dees. He is a proud man and believes in himself. He will want to finish what he started. And imv he is the best person available to do it.
