  1. I'm dirty on this loss, but I'll let the rest of the usual suspects lose the plot, slash their wrists and do the usual ranting and raving. Seriously, go right ahead. We lost this game today in front of goal. Sure, they cut us up during periods of the game with their use by foot and our willingness to allow them space. But we should never have let them win this game of footy. When Hogan goaled and we were 3.7 it should have been 7.3, as we missed a slew of easy shots. If we were 6 goals up then they would have been dead and buried. But they weren't, they got a sniff and, as experienced sides do, they made their chances count when we didn't and we couldn't haul them back. I must admit that I was bemused at times by some of our decision making, and the implied pressure of the Swans meant that we rushed things at times when we didn't need to. We had every opportunity to win this game of footy, but we didn't make it count, and that's down to composure and skill execution under pressure. It's not down to leadership and all that stuff. We just didn't execute well under pressure. We certainly lacked some class at times and too many players went missing, but this isn't the end of the world. Seriously, it's not. We've got two games to go - win one and we're in. Simple as that.

  2. All these finals permutations are getting confusing. Remind me again, are we cheering for or against Sydney today?

  3. Gee, 'suspect when pressured' is really tough on Salem. He had 22 possessions @ 95.5%. 5 marks. 6 R50's. 4 Tackles. He ran and he bounced and he kicked true. Am genuinely curious as to what you saw to think he was suspect.

  8. It is so easy to take a potshot at the bloke coming in to pay his first game in about 10 weeks and on base money instead of the Top 10 highest paid players that play every week and continually let us down against Top 8 sides.

  9. Bad kicking is bad football. I'm disgusted at the loss today. The optimists can continue their blind hope. I only deal in facts, and the fact is nothing has changed and the club has been a failure for over half a century. It's getting f*cking tiresome watching the same stupid sh*t being served up year after year. You can say we've improved, but so have all the other clubs around us and we're still battling to even make finals. With the playing list we have, we should be a top 4 certainty. I don't know who's to blame, but someone needs to be accountable for the continuous failure. If anyone knows where umpire Matthew Nicholls lives, please PM me. I've had a gutful of the cheating/incompetent (take your pick) maggot, and I need to carry out justice for the sake of society.

  11. @Jibroni - I saw you quote me in the now locked gameday thread as well. Not only did you follow me around like a puppy after I tried to show a bit of faith in the side, but quoting me at the end of the day is childish and embarrassing. Yeah, I got it wrong, but I'd rather put my neck on the line in a positive manner than [censored] and moan. At least I can get behind the club and try and support it, unlike your good self. Cheers.

  14. Why the hell did they bring in Hunt? ' I said on the DL podcast that he was out of form all year and off an injury had 1 quiet game in the 2's..... no surprises he had a shocker of a game Boys did well to try and claw back in the last but once again inaccuracy costs us probably another finals berth

He just couldn’t keep up with AFL footy and the demands. But at least we were all able to see Harley for being Harley. He felt comfortable to be himself around the club and he opened up to the boys on multiple occasions, but, ultimately, he just could not commit to the journey. Footy is hard and there is a baseline level of competitiveness, professionalism and fitness that you have to reach. But footy would be a whole lot harder if you had to change your personality or use extra energy pretending to be different person."

  17. A lot to like about Sam Frost .. Not just today but, in his continued development as a very very good tall running Key defensive back. I thought his very very good today vs Buddy and I believe he will team well with Jake Lever next year to provide running rebound from the backline I hope coaches see this and nurture and encourage. A very positive in the games he has played. Yep knows he needs to work on his game, but Big Tall running athletic defenders are hard to find! Bravo young man! Believe!

  19. I’ve heard this before. We could be second on the ladder. Instead we may not make the 8. It’s as simple as that. I don’t care for should haves and could haves. I deal in facts. The fact is we are staring at 2 wasted seasons under Goodwin. This was the “easiest” of the next 3 matches and we blew it. Forget bad goal kicking, we shat our pants under pressure. We fell apart. There are no more excuses.

  20. Sorry, is it full time or half time? So many calling this over. It's 14 points FFS. Pretty terrible quarter by our standards, but lots of improvement left in us and we have 2 quarters to do it in. We finish games strongly and I see no reason why we won't do it again. Obviously, our use forward needs to be cleaned up as it felt like every entry went in Aliir's direction, but outside of that we are still getting plenty of shots on goal and good run going forward. Why anyone thinks we're out of it is beyond me.

  23. I tried my absolute best to refrain from coming on here to foam verbal dirrohea but I don’t think it will so much good. What can you say that hasn’t already been said? You rock up to the MCG in a big stage match hoping the club will make a statement but fold faster than Superman on laundry day. This was always going to be a game where the first 15 minutes were going to tell a lot. You could go all in with the nutters who look at 2.6 to 1.1 and say “Look at that Melbourne’s winning!” But I think myself and a lot of people felt quite differently. I saw a guy who has kicked 40+ this year and playing his best season fluff one completely from 15 metres out slight angle. I see the trend continue into the 2nd quarter with T-Mac spurning one dead in front. These misses were not close, they were way off and they told me a lot about where the mindset of where our guys were today, which was not up to it. The swans took their chances and played the game in a professional manner. At half time I was shot. I don’t think there’s a bigger buzz killer in footy than bad kicking. And at 3.12 you feel your mindset is as flat as the guys out there. I just felt it was gonna be a mammoth task from there. Sam Frost, your head is to be held up high. Gus Brayshaw, your head up high. Special mention to Dom, Salem and even Trac who had a go. That’s where it ends I’m afraid, the rest were lacking big time. Neal-Bullen, big let down today expected s big one. Garlett, not a skerick of pressure. Hunt, next to completely useless. A lot more underperformers. I am so deeply disappointed right now. I know there are plenty here who are. MFC just feels like an unborn baby that does not want to come out of the womb, they like it in there because it’s nice and warm. We did a massive number on our chances today, there are still 2 games but gut feel is this is it. We had a few goes to get it right with St Kilda, Geelong, Port. You only get so many get out of jail free cards. I could go on forever right now but I’m not going to, that’s just stupid. But I want to say one thing: To all the positive Dees fans here who are always looking on the bright side. I am burning and gutted right now but I’m never going to attack you for being positive. At 3 qtr time I was going to a heap when I looked at DL on my phone and saw @Wiseblood tellling us to chill out because we were going to win this. I need people like you to keep me sane! I know it’s not always what we want to hear and I know I can be as negative as they come but please don’t ever change. We need this stuff. I’m sick to death of dealing with this kind of stuff from this club but what can you do? Signed the lifelong contract of doom.

  24. Maybe this is a bit of a "old man" view, but, I don't think it was great preparation for our players to be at Jake Lever's engagement party on the night before a crunch game. The likes of Petracca, Jones Gawn and others were all there having a great time, whilst the Swans would've been minds on the job at their hotel, together, and preparing for the big game. No surprises all uploads from the party on instagram have now been deleted.

  25. This was very similar to the Round 1Cats loss. Allowed the Swans to control the tempo in the second and third quarters. Easy exits out of defence with short precise kicks and had us going side to side aimlessly. Structures were non existent in that period. @Lucifer's Hero is pretty much spot on after what I saw from ground level. The lapse cost us Round 1 and it cost us today. Yes we kicked bad but I can’t hang my hat on that. If one of those is a goal, ball is back in the centre and who knows what happens. We had a chance to win the game but let’s not get fooled by the last quarter. Swans were hanging on for dear life with 2 less men.....and to allow Heeney to camp in the goalsquare for the entire term on his own is astounding. We didn’t send one player to at least stand next to him and impede him at all. Edit: This is an opinion on today only. I still believe we can win the last two with Hibbo and Melksham back.

  26. Just wanna check . . . is that the same Hogan that: has the ball constantly kicked on top of his head has the ball kicked to his defensive side regularly competes against two or three opponents because we move the ball slowly or in unpredictable patterns has the ball dropped in front of him was a lock for AA in the middle of the season was rated top 15 players in the comp by The Roar a month ago flies against (take your pick) Pedo/Max/Harmes/Trac/Hotdog stand vendor runs his guts out to make position at half forward for a clear receive only to see the ball fumbled or turned over by (take you pick) ANB/Spargo/Jones/Tyson/Frost is so bugged by the time he does get the ball that he can't kick straight? Yeah . . . trade him I recon.

  30. Not usually in the camp of blaming the umpires, but Nicholls was frustrating me this arvo to the point of kicking seats at the G. He’d either: 1. Allow a non officiating umpire to call a free our way 2. Deem the contest halved, even if he’d just paid a free to them for the same thing 3. Give them a free, even if we’d done enough to win the free once or twice over before he could ping us third time up. We’ll never get a fair result with him at the helm. #cheatingbaldprick

  31. Sydney scored 13.9.87. Their season average is 12.9. So they were right around their average, both as to number of scoring shots and total score. We scored 10.18.78. Our season average is 15.13. So we were right around our average scoring shots, but nowhere near our average score. I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that this inaccuracy is, largely, where the game was lost.

  32. On what has been a very emotional day I have to admit for the first time this club has hurt me to the core. Started at 9 am volunteering for BCNA day and honouring 3 close family and friends lost to breast cancer. You hope your team will put in and give you a lift, but no they just don't have it. They don't have the right stuff. Sydney were 2 rotations down from early on and played with resilience, toughness and structure. We butcher it and find yet another way to lose a game we should win. It is not the loss that guts me it is the way we lose. Clearly we have talent but we are not a team. Individuals do flashy stuff but we find a way to lose and have done so against every top 8 team this year and this is why we are not a top 8 team. Sydney were out on their feet in the last 20 minutes yet still held on while we kicked it out on the full, couldn't kick 30 metres and continually hit opposition targets when streaming forward (Nathan Jones I am calling you out here). I know you shouldn't write when upset but gees this club is hard to support..............

  33. Infuriating. Not just because of what is on the line for us in terms of finals. But because we lost the same way we always do. +17 inside 50s and +6 scoring shots should be a 20+ point win. Being up two men on the bench for 2.5 quarters (Hunt sat out most of the last quarter with a rolled ankle) should make that 30+ points. Inexcusable number of passengers: Pedersen, Spargo, Garlett, Hunt, ANB and JKH all had little to no impact on the game. VDB kicked three goals but for 90% of the game was not just poor, but was a main reason for our struggles through his complete inability to compete with Aliir. Hogan and TMac missed critical shots at critical times. Jones was inept (though credit to him for his fourth quarter workrate). We continued to kick the ball to poor places. We continued to play one off the back of the square which only resulted in them mopping up inside 50 after inside 50. And we killed our own momentum by missing easy set shots. When Gawn doesn't dominate in the middle, we don't get anything from the one off the back of the square. We stopped doing it in the fourth and looked a little better with our ball movement. ANB is a real problem. Too often goes to water when the pressure goes up but our game requires his input. We're clearly struggling to cover Viney, Lever, Melksham and Hibberd. Fingers crossed the latter two come back next week. The door is still open for us given North and Port's losses. We will finish next week in the 8 unless we lose by 100 and Geelong wins by 100. But if we lose and then need to beat GWS in the last game to make the finals, I do not like our chances at all.

  36. Poor kicking for goal is not why we lost! Thinking like that is an easy out for those who want to play ostrich or just make excuses. We lost the game in the 2nd quarter. Early in they kicked 3 or 4 goals because we had no-one guarding the goal square and the ball just bounced through. Don't know leaving the goal square open was a coaching decision or poor on field leadership but it cost us big time. They should not have got such easy goals. Those easy goals got their tails up and they started to play 'tempo' football brilliantly controlling the ball. Time and Time again they would get the ball in their back 50 and with precision short kicks they had uncontested marks all they way to goal. We didn't even touch it or get close to laying a tackle. They got a few more goals that way. Before we knew it they had 7 unanswered goals. Note the # of marks: Syd: 120. Melb: 82. I can't find how many were uncontested but it would be a large percentage for them. They laid 77 tackles to our 69. Poor kicking has little to do with those stats and a lot to do with work rate, game sense and back up plans. We were comprehensively outplayed in the 2nd and 3rd quarter when our structures broke down. Our forward structures broke down as badly as our defensive structures. The big issue for me was that we were not even come close to countering their 'tempo' game. They wouldn't let us play 'our way' and we were lost and flat footed. That is why they won.

  38. Are people for real about Hogan? All Australian contention until 6 weeks ago when he did his ankle. Is playing on one leg now and still kicked bags of 4 twice. It's not his fault we don't have good enough Fs in the wings to take his spot when he's lame. I know everyone's upset and everything, and rightly so.... but is this what Demonland has come to? Whining about trading Hogan in his best season yet? Fair dinkim the stupidity in this place is a joke sometimes.

  39. I heard Nathan Burke on radio pregame tipping the Swans, because, and I quote: “Melbourne will choke. They always do”. It made me angry, because I wanted in my heart to know that he was wrong, but in my head I knew he was likely on the money. Once more we had everything to play for, but this time against an interstate team, at home, and down to 20 men effectively for the whole game. In truth, if we had an ounce of the gumption, belief and sheer fortitude that Sydney has, we would have won, and bearing life as a Dees supporter would be a breeze. As it is, this club currently has an insurmountable problem with their group psyche. Will it change? Maybe, hopefully, but nothing about their approach to big games this year tells me it will. And even if we make finals, it’s worth little, because quality teams know easily they can upset our apple cart mentally and tactically. We are horribly inadaptable defensively, have been all year, the good teams exploit it, and today happens. As a result, I couldn’t be more confident that we’ll roll over in the next two weeks.

  40. It’s the little things we do poorly again and again that kill us. Dumb decision making from marks and free kicks, bad tackling techniques, poor lead patterns, poor kicking skills, multiple players flying for the same ball. When we play poor teams they go unpunished, when we play good teams they get punished. Also, we don’t know how to manage the clock and momentum, if we can’t play on straight away we go to water.

  45. FIFTY MINUTES by KC from Casey The Casey Demons made it 12 wins on end with yet another come-from-behind victory at home against Sandringham on Saturday night. The lowly Zebras jumped the Demons and took the lead at the two minute mark of the opening term and kicked the game’s first four goals to hold a game high 23-point lead just before quarter time. By then, the home side was one man down after Bernie Vince hurt his AC joint in a collision with an opponent. He immediately left the field and ended the day in hospital. His season is over. Casey’s first goal came early in the second term with a free kick to the diminutive Will Stephenson. They ground their way back into the game with four goals to one during this period to go into the sheds at half time only three points in arrears. During the main break, the consensus among the crowd was that the Demons would overrun their opposition in the second half but it was Sandringham that came out firing and booted the first two goals of the third term to retake the initiative. Casey fought back with a goal to Mitch King but when the Zebras immediately responded, they led 8.6.54 to 5.8.38. The goal to Sandy’s Ray Connellan came at the 10 minute mark and was to be the visitors’ last score for the game. The next 20 minutes or so were spent by Casey clawing back the deficit as they added goals to Corey Machaya and Dean Kent and four behinds to draw to level by the final break. The Demons finally hit the lead with a behind five minutes into the last quarter but the arm wrestle continued for what seemed an eternity but it took until the 13 minute mark for Sam Weideman to break the impasse with his second goal which gave his team a 7 point lead. There would be another two goals later in the term but the Zebras were cooked as the Demons pushed their lead out to 21 points at the finish. In the last 50 minutes of play, Casey scored 5.7.37 to nothing. The win put it on top of the VFL ladder after Richmond lost its second game in a row. The nature of this contest saw to it that very few players were on top throughout but special accolades must go to defenders Declan Kielty who admirably filled the large void left by Cam Pedersen in the key defensive post with his strong marking and attack on the football and skipper Jack Hutchins whose strength in the clinches was instrumental in holding back the tide early and then in shutting down the Zebras in the latter part of the game. They were very capably assisted by youngsters Dion Johnstone and Harry Petty who returned to the field after injuring his finger in the second term. Josh Wagner and Jay Lockwood were very solid as well in a strong defensive effort. Mitch Gent and Angus Scott were busy all day and Corey Wagner maintained his consistent high standard of play. With the loss of Vince, Tom Bugg stepped up to the plate with 31 disposals for the day and Dean Kent was excellent up forward with three telling goals when they were needed. Mitch King and Sam Weideman combined well in a game that saw a rare Casey win in the overall ruck duels. The latter also contributed two goals while up forward. Young rookie ruckman Lachie Filipovic spent much of the game on the sidelines with a hamstring injury. The Casey juggernaut moves on to Box Hill City Oval for what promises to be a hard fought tussle between two teams that will fight out the finals next month.
