  1. Did anyone see Neale Daniher's speech to the Melbourne players that they showed after the footy last night on 7? I just found part of his talk here. It's interesting to see during the week when he spoke to collingwood and essendon he was joking around having a laugh but when he spoke to the Melbourne players and apparently the whole Melbourne staff were told to come in and listen, he was all serious and spoke about taking our opportunities and about why not. He said why not take our opportunity this year and have success. Why can't you go on and be premiers. Spoke about the last premiership being in 1964 and said its time for us to win it. You could just see the look in the players eye especially Jonseys that he gets it. Gee if that doesn't motivate the boys Im not sure what will. Neale is just amazing. You think after each Queen's birthday you are never sure if Neale will be around the following year but he is still fighting on. I think it's great for any 1st year player this year hears Neal speak and learn from him.

  4. This is the only page of the thread I've read, but I'm sure there are some "insightful" observations by some... My main takeaways. While Weideman was quiet, I'm more interested in his movement. It was good to see him take 3 or 4 contested marks, but he has a spring and bounce in his step that was missing last year due to his ankle injury. He's still only 20 and WILL make it. He'll be a very good AFL footballer. Petty. The guy is 18 years of age. He is going to be a 200 game AFL footballer. He made a few skill execution errors and the odd poor decision, but his reading of the play, marking, and agility is first class. In a very congested game, Tyson is clearly too classy for this level. Hunt has a real crack and some good AFL assets, but it's not quite working for him. I think he needs to learn how to play to his limitations. I still like what he potentially offers. The rest of the Dees' listed AFL players are probably depth, but it's a bit early to know for a couple. We develop players well, so some might make rapid progress.

  5. My father is in the team list that day. I just tried to call him to confirm if he played on the momentous occasion and to see if he remembers it but he’s still on the golf course so I’ll have to wait a little I guess.

  6. For ———sake leave Watts alone. I hate this carping on every time he makes a mistake or plays poorly. He gave loyal service to our club over a long period in difficult times, he deserves respect. We should just wish him well and leave it at that.

  7. Thoughts on our players today from my position on the far side of the ground; Tyson: At quarter time he was BOG by the length of the Flemington straight. Was clean, used it well and looked a class above. Collingwood put a bit more work into him after 1/4 time, but his first touch work was still very good. Frost: Not bad without being great. Very solid and I thought his move forward was important in giving Casey another avenue towards goal despite not hitting the score board himself. JKH: BOG for mine. His ball use and ability to create run and win his own ball was very impressive. Think he still has a future in the AFL, not sure if it will be us however. Weideman: Very quiet, although to be fair the delivery was pretty poor. His last quarter was good I thought. A couple of strong marks and competed well. Balic: Very good first term and seemed to be the main avenue through half forward. Drifted out of the game for the next two quarters, but stood up when it mattered most with 2 last quarter goals. Hunt: Didn't star, but liked what he did do. I thought his ball use was better and he really cracked in. Bugg: Very solid game through the midfield and was probably the most consistent in each of the 4 quarters. Funny that he can't miss a shot at VFL level. Baker: Quiet start, but got better as the game went on. Missed what would have been a beauty in the 2nd term, but kicked the last of the day. King: Quiet game. Got to a lot of marking contests, but couldn't seem to hang onto any of them. Petty: Very good game, and is a very promising player. He looks class this kid! Johnston: I thought about 3 weeks ago that Johnston was DOA at the exit interviews at years end, however his move to defence has been inspired. Don't write this kid off yet. Could be groomed as a future small defender IMO. Was very solid. J. Wagner: Another very solid game. Used it well, and I'm slowly starting to develop some confidence in his decision making. I feel he's being groomed for Jordan Lewis eventual replacement. Very good at this level. Keilty: Best game I've seen him play live. Multiple intercept marks and he seemed to cover the ground better then I've seen him do before. Really seems to be starting to blossom. Filipovic: I thought his ruck work was quite impressive considering he was giving away several kg's. Next thing for him to do apart from add muscle is to start to do a bit more around the ground. He is still very young though. SPECIAL MENTION Corey Wagner: Came to Casey after two years and 8 games with North Melbourne and time in the Lions acadamey before that. Looks at home amongst the AFL mids and he runs hard. Certainly wouldn't be against adding him to our midfield stocks at seasons end.

  11. Doesn't matter - he'll be too busy preparing for an AFL Grand Final. As for the game, I tuned into the 2nd half and was really impressed by the slick ball movement of JKH and Tyson. JKH in particular was really classy in the 3rd quarter - lots of really quick releases handpasses to free players from contested sitatuions. He reminded me a lot of Oliver actually and if he keeps up this form he'd definitely be worth keeping on the list. Was also really impressed with some of the risky kicks he and Tyson managed to pull off, changing our angles going forward. Some of those won't work in the AFL, but it fits with Goody's game plan. Such is the strength of our AFL midfield at the moment, it's hard to see him (and even Tyson) getting into the centre square or wing anytime soon in the seniors, but if anyone gets injured they are more than capable replacements, especially on today's form. I also liked the look of Balic up forward - he's another of those medium-sized players that is hard to match up on because at times he played like a true full forward. His ground kicking needs a bit of work, but I think he's another player who could easily step into the seniors. Petty looked great in defence and Keilty seemed to do some nice things as well. With Frost moving forward for the 2nd half, it looks like the match committee have these two (and Wagner) as the others in line for Lever's spot if Smith doesn't make the cut. I also thought Hunt didn't do his chances any harm. Didn't get a huge amount of touches but he was hard at every contest and showed some good ability to break away from packs 2 or 3 times. I wouldn't think he's too far away.

  16. Time for the AFL to end the Gold Coast experiment. It's been a monumental disaster from start to finish. Two teams in Queensland clearly doesn't work and I'd rather a team in Tassie than a team which is completely irrelevant. The whole set up is an almighty black hole.

  17. Sam Weideman is coming along nicely and we are really well served for key defenders when you see the likes of Petty, Keilty and Frost playing at Casey. Petty looks like a fantastic prospect and I expect him to be a long term senior footballer.

  18. petty has controlled that back half and when weed is clunking those sorts of marks you can't help but watch the kid and think 'add 10km of muscle please' - he has agility and the basic traits of a key forward, but he's undersized and only 20 years old...will be a player

  19. Flower is the absolute Demon hero for our clan. My dad played for Murrumbeena in the late 60's and when he was 21/22 coached the Murrumbeena Districts U11s. One of his charges was a young Bob Flower. Dad is the 'adult' at the back left of the photo. Young Bob is in there too. No idea where that scorched earth wasteland is that they had the photo taken, but whatevs. As it happens after my years of meandering through Rosebud junior footy, then Monash Rugby (more of a drinking exercise) I played a season of footy at the 'Beena before heading overseas. I tried hard but was just an honest backman in the Magoos. Anyway, playing for that club where my dad was a premiership player was a great highlight.

  20. I cannot watch Neile Daniher these days without tearing up. One of the most motivational men I have ever had the pleasure of meeting in my lifetime. 'You give up, you give in or you give it all you got'. I hope all of our boys took that in and do Neale proud on Monday.

  21. Should be a decent game but Casey at home with ~16 AFL listed players plus some good VFL talent should be more then enough to knock off the Pies. Watching the defenders over the next few weeks will be very interesting. Petty will be full of confidence, Keilty needs to get back to his best, as do Frost, Hunt and Wagner if they want any chance at playing seniors this year, and in Decs case especially, they’re playing to keep their spot on the list all together.

  27. Great win considering we didn't have Tim.Smith and Garlett. TYSON -Best on ground a class above this level really pushing for a senior re call. FROST - Prefer him as a forward and with Hutchins back in the side don't be surprised to see him spend more time there. KENNEDY HARRIS - Definitely one of his better games hopefully he can show more consistency. WEIDEMAN - Took a few good marks late but otherwise quiet. BALIC - In and out of the game but a great last quarter, shows good signs. HUNT - Really disappointing not showing his usual dash and wasn't in the game a hell of a lot. BUGG - Really good game probably second best on ground, I don't understand why he can kick straight at VFL level but not AFL level frustrating footballer. BAKER - Reallly exciting prospect but like Hunt needs to work on his disposal. KING - Developing ruck needs more time. PETTY - Has really good football smarts apart from a couple of dodgy kicks into the corridor he was a general down back. JOHNSTONE - Has definitely found his niche down back and may have saved his career only time will tell. WAGNER - Typical Wagner game solid without being spectacular. KEILTY - Mr Dependable didn't put a foot wrong. FILIPOVIC - Loved his bump. Showed a bit of agro I like that in a ruckman.

  33. The horses i marked for this race were Champagne Cuddles (on top) from (not in order) Perast, Voodoo lad , Impending, Invincible gem. So given we have Perast and Voodoo Lad already so for the DL trif i am going to select: Champagne Cuddles Invincible gem Impending has to be a big show and i'm sure will run well. But the weight might stop him and Invincible Gem puts some value into the trif (although there is a bit in already)

  34. I like it too. Great first up record (7: 4 - 2), something i always put great stock in. Likes it soft (9: 4 - 4) and Weir really is a brilliant trainer. Above all a good racehorse I worry that it might get too far back as i expect the race to favour those on speed and near the rail (i suspect Monstar and perst will vie for the lea, with Perast winning that mini battle)

  35. Lots of loves from me on this one: love for Danners the man, and and his attitude in adversity; love for the way our footy club has embraced Danners, and the MND program; love for the inspiration that Danners continues to give to the football community in general and our club in particular. Let's just do it!

  36. Perast will find the lead and prove mighty hard to run down. But i think will be. Just. I know that i am supposed to wait until you all make your selections, but i'm in a bit of a bind. I have to drive to Ballarat today (to sit in cold bball stadiums - my son has a tournament there this weekend). I've done my form and made my selctions I'll wait for a while and just before i go check if the selections are up. If not i'll put up my analysis and tips for the race (1-4) and if for instance the winner or a place getters matches other's selections just take the horses not covered (assuming there is one)? I'm leaving just before 12.
