  1. I find it exciting to see the new kids come into the club and watch their development. With Pat, as you say, we have another player who we have not yet seen and who is like another young draftee. Balic is another in this category and you could also add Joel Smith, Corey Maynard and Dion Johnstone. Exciting times ahead.

  4. Is this your first rodeo? Power Rankings usually the week before, phantom drafts a day or 2 before. Just relax.

  5. How anyone can be apathetic about what jumper and colours your team wears is beyond me. Players come and go, but the glue that knits generations of fans together is the jumper and colours. One can try and place themselves above such menial matters in an attempt to seem more enlightened, but you've just taken a position that is at odds with footy, reason, and passion. Naturally, fans put up with it, as there's little choice, but how anyone couldn't care or could even embrace a clash jumper beggars belief. I assume such supporters wouldn't give a yelp if the club decided to push for a permanent change to green and aqua. I find the position disingenuous.

  6. I'll go even further, of all the top 10 draft picks in 2008, three players never received a rising star nomination - Watts, Vickery and Hartlett. Hartlett was awarded the best first year player at Port. Watts is also one of two former number 1 draft picks to never receive a Rising Star nomination (the other being Paddy McCartin). Two of that Top 10 are current club captains, 1 has been a vice captain, 1 an All Australian, 3 are or have been in their club's Leadership Group, with 1 of those winning the Rising Star of the whole competition. So, your comment about 8 of the 10 clubs, in hindsight, got it wrong - I think it's more of a case that 2 clubs, in hindsight, got it wrong. True, the class of 2008 isn't riddled with superstars, but there have been many, many more than serviceable players graduate. Of the entire group that we selected, 5 in total, only 1 remains on our list (Nev Jetta, taken at 51). It's not about us being "experts". None of the critics are claiming they are. What we are critical of is that the guys that are the so-called experts, the ones getting paid top dollar to do this specific job for our footy club, they both failed time and time again. Use whatever excuse you like, but they still failed at hat they were employed to do.

  7. The games he played for GWS in the NEAFL were the reason we traded him, watched him as a youngstet and we ensured he hadn't gone backwards, I asked Proper development now, took the opportunity when off legs to rebuild him from ground up, put on 5kg of muscle, also like Vanders spent time in Casey coaches box as a 'learning' experience Another player who like the other young ones could be anything or nothing, time will tell

  8. There's an interesting guide to the draft in The Age that looks at where each club's list is at and what their needs are in the draft: 2017 Club by Club Guide MELBOURNE Draft picks: 29, 31, 36, 47 DEPTH CHART KEY DEFENDERS: Jake Lever, Oscar McDonald, Sam Frost SMALL/MEDIUM DEFENDERS: Michael Hibberd, Neville Jetta, Jayden Hunt, Christian Salem, Joel Smith, Josh Wagner, Pat McKenna MIDFIELDERS: Clayton Oliver, Jack Viney, Nathan Jones, Dom Tyson, Jordan Lewis, Bernie Vince, Angus Brayshaw, Alex Neal-Bullen, Aaron Vandenberg, Harley Balic, Billy Stretch, Tom Bugg, Corey Maynard KEY FORWARDS: Jesse Hogan, Tom McDonald, Sam Weideman, Cam Pedersen, Tim Smith, Declan Keilty SMALL/MEDIUM FORWARDS: Christian Petracca, Jeff Garlett, Mitch Hannan, Jake Melksham, Dean Kent, James Harmes, Jay Kennedy-Harris, Dion Johnstone RUCKS: Max Gawn, Mitch King, Lachlan Filipovic Melbourne have brought in most of their trade targets in recent seasons and still kept a reasonable draft hand, even though many of their fans had concerns about giving up former No. 1 pick Jack Watts for selection 31. The Dees have done the hard yards at the draft in recent seasons and have nailed enough picks in the last few years to ensure they have a very impressive young core, with few clear weaknesses. To nitpick, most of their best midfielders are primarily inside bulls, so while they have some good movers off half-back they could probably do with some more run through the midfield. Looking at who might be available when the Demons have a glut of picks from 29 to 36, Jack Petruccelle's pace could well be an option, while Ryley Stoddart and Zac Bailey are expected to fall in the second or third round. The Demons have also been linked to Oskar Baker, formerly of the Brisbane Lions' academy, another known for dash. The delisting of Jake Spencer leaves them a little short in the ruck, even though Tom McDonald and Cam Pedersen did decent jobs during the year with Max Gawn injured. It wouldn't be a surprise if Melbourne plucked a mature-age rookie ruck to provide further cover.

  9. He has very good peripheral vision. He is a natural footballer, good mover and places his kicks well. Although we don't see his clangers in highlight reels

  11. this thread is about (predominately) white clash jumpers. the richmond gf clash jumper was just the home jumper in reverse (no white) most opponents here of the clash jumper have basically 2 issues 1. no white clash jumper 2. no clash jumper in games when there is no real need for one

  13. Yep, having this guy on our Category B list is really stopping us from developing the next superstar. I honestly don't care if Maynard never amounts to more than good foot soldier - every premeriship team has a dozen goof foot soldiers behind it and Maynard looks like he could fit that bill to me. To put him in the same basket as players like Mitchie, Newton, Pig Dog etc is total BS. This guy has size, athletic ability and competitiveness/agression running through his veins which to me suggests he will make his mark.

  14. I never saw Viv, Ben and Ben do what I have seen Corey do, so he is different. Also my temperature never rose a degree with those blokes. Corey is a bigger unit and he just may raise a few temperatures this year. To dominate a midfield in a VFL final and have Morris hit you three times after you got rid of the ball, basically illegally and with all his power and then to shrug those hits off and continue to dominate is exciting. I think Maynard is capable of becoming a regular senior player, which the other three were not.

  15. Sorry cannot stand this stupid response. In what way is caring about the jumper we wear in conflict with us winning games or not? It's not like it's a mutually exclusive propersition. I can thint of a lot of things I care less about posted on Demonland (like Ty Vickory) and this time of year, few more that I care about than seeing our club properly address this issue. I mean obviously there is the draft, but until it happens, it's like throwing darts at a dart board. And even then, until those players that are drafted actually produce on the feild, it's more an act of navel gazing for us mere supporters. And it's not like directing some of the club's management staff to take this issue up with the AFL and get an appropriate outcome is distracting our playing group, coaching or recruiting staff. Getting a good outcome for our footy club could also help to recruit and retain more members. Beyond all, when our team wins, I want to see it happen in a jumper that actually looks like our teams, not some crappy half baked version that looks more like a Sydney jumper than a Melbourne one. Every Heart Beats True for the RED and BLUE

  16. Attended Corey's 'finals' game with Casey v a near AFL side in Richmond. He was simply outstanding. Very strong over the ball and good user. Thought I saw a real AFL player. Predict he will make massive improvement this year, barring injury

  17. The word from out at Casey is that recently retired MFC 141 gamer Colin Garland who will have coaching roles with the club’s AFLW and VFLW teams in 2018 could also turn out during the season with the Casey Demons. Delisted rookie Mitch White is also said to be a likely recruit. With the axing of the Development League, the Casey Demons’ VFL list will be reduced significantly. One player off to the Frankston Dolphins for their return season to the VFL is Jake Lovett.

  20. This is very close to what I would have. Media is a Bummer love fest there days. AFL directed of course. Cal Twomey is a Bummer fan too. Reckon Jetts would be top 15. Not sure where Watts would be.

  22. We don’t clash with anyone however the white makes us clash with St Kilda. Why do we need an away jumper? In the old days it was black and white shorts (and those were the days when a mud patch in the centre and in front of goals ensured both teams had black shorts at the end)! These days there is no such problem (plus we have red socks as well)!

  27. I like Ryley Stoddart game ....leftie who plays like a Hunt/Hibbard blend Oskar Baker has great pace and looks like a natural confident footballer who takes the game on.

  28. How do you measure a person's strength? There are a number of ways you can do that in a gym - e.g. the bench press. On a football field you can tell it by the way players can burst through packs, shrug off tackles and lay hard tackles on opponents. I don't think it's all that difficult to make an assessment as to whether a player is strong by observing how he plays. It's probably more difficult to determine the relative strengths of two players. Physical strength is an attribute of both Maynard and Tyson and of course, we've had more opportunities to see the latter in the pressure of an AFL game. Mental strength is another thing altogether and that's where Jack Viney comes into it because he's shown that he's up there with the best in both departments despite his size.

  30. No couch here lefty. I'm in the gym, after a productive day blasting the overburden at my coal mine. Great industry coal. Looking forward to Pauline building a new coal power plane nearby sometime soon. Even married gays need electricity. If you don't want a reply, don't include me in your generalisations.

  31. I hear you brother. Please remind me just how many years this guy has spent ('clogging') an AFL list?

  32. Pre-defection and Tex dummy spit, he was lauded at the Crows for his professionalism, fastidious preparation and leadership. With an injury free preseason he will have a rip snorter of a season next year. And hes only 21! Wowee!

  33. Maynard's one game for the club was impressive enough and in hindsight, he probably should not have been dropped. His performance in that VFL final for Casey against Richmond was a standout and if he can match the strength and resilience he showed that day, he'll be a regular in the AFL next year.

  37. AFL told us years ago red is a "dark" colour and we need a jumper with predominantly "light" colour. However Essendons clash jumper is an inverted version of their normal jumper so not sure why ours couldn't be the same.

  38. Maynard is a completely different kettle of fish and it would be a good idea for people to realise this and treat it as such . The blokes you've mentioned have had/having careers as professional footballers and subsequently not cut it at AFL level. Maynard has spent all his formative years playing elite level basketball and is now into a second pre-season after playing dominant VFL games and showing some competency in one single AFL game. I think it's quite realistic to have high hopes for him given his back story.

  42. I posted this in another thread, but I can tell you, I was given info from a person connected to the MFC that suggested that the White clash while be done away with and that the new clash jumper will be "as traditional as it could be'. Make of that what you will. I pushed the guy for more details or for a release date, but he was tight lipped...which is fair enough. Based on what he told me, I am excited to see the design.

  43. I know not everyone rates his opinion, but Garry Lyon on SEN yesterday mentioned that he thought Corey could turn into something special. Can't remember his exact wording but he sounded pretty excited about what he could bring. Last year he was very bullish about Clayton Oliver before 2017 started, so hopefully he has the same foresight on Corey.

  47. Purchased the Kindle version today. Nearly all of his 'books' reviews measure up as very highly regarded so I'm keen to get stuck into it. I do however have two more episodes on Westworld to consume prior to this which, as a matter of coincidence, may be a rather apt prelude to the book.

  48. Colin Garland is what footy ought a be about. Have we had any better a clubman, then Garlo? Takes the train to the footy. just a great fella I reckon. A real community spirited person imo.
