  1. It's pretty widely known that the players love Goody, but Hogan and "some" others couldn't stand Roos. He's done his job at the Dees. If he coaches he coaches. Good luck to him.

  3. Watched the game 'as live' this morning from 7am. Succeeded in total information blackout until i saw a text from my crows supporting brother in law on the home page of my phone. Only read one word before throwing my phone away - the dees. Was he congratulating me on how great the dess were looking (unlikely) or winding me up about a loss (much more likely). So i approached the game with a high degree of trepidation. Some random thoughts: I though early on my predictions of a big win were going to be proven correct. We should have been 4 goals up after the first quarter with way we dominated possession Salem was unbelievable all game, but particularly in the first quarter. I love the time he has and his clean skills We could have barely butchered the ball more than we did in the fist 3 qs. Lewis was as bad as anyone (with eexception of tyson who had some shockers). Of the mids the only player who i can't recall making a huge turnover was Jones. After quarter time Bolton went defensive (which i should have predicted) and clogged the game up. We struggled in the second and in particular the third to link up and penetrate our forward half. Good coaching, reminiscent of Roos in his first year at the dees with emphasis on defense first and minimising scoring. Aided by a good back half. The game after quarter time was played on their terms - even in the last Watts did well in the last quarter when he went into the ruck - a point made by one of his biggest critics over the years, Leigh Matthews. Frustrated me big time at one point we he didn't mark a ball he should have and then redeemed himself just a few minutes later with a critical mark mark on half forward. Even if you are not not a Watts fan, hand on heart, is there any player at the dees you would rather have the ball if a critical kick need to be made (shot at goal or field kick) Our back six won us the game - and yes that includes OMac. I love the way Jetta plays and TMac was awesome Hogan has to do some work with a psychologist. His miss from dead in front 30 meters out in the last after a brilliant kick from Watts on his left was unforgivable, given the circumstances and continues a worrying trend of him missing critical goals (can you imagine Dunstall missing that goal? or Watts for that matter?). But his brain snap against Rowe was much, much worse. Deserved weeks and got them. Simply not good enough. Our last quarter was fantastic in so far as we willed ourselves to win. A six goal quarter where we barely could get flowing. Goodwin was effusive in his praise for their effort and said a a couple of times how proud he was. Thus was exactly the sort of win good footy sides pull out. We were down, played poorly, the opposition scrapped very hard and got ahead. Yet we found a way to win. Credit, again, must go to Goodwin. A loss here would have really set us back. A win - even an ugly one - keeps us moving forward Whilst it was indeed an ugly win the bookies had the line at 28 points. This is as reliable an indication of relative chance as any. We won by 22 points, so only a goal off the line. This should be factored into to any assessment of the merit or otherwise of the win

  5. While it would have been better for him not to be given a 3 week suspension, what he did was help to lead the team back from the brink. Cripps was dominating at the time and the Blues were well on top. Lewis (and Viney) clobber Cripps (yes, Lewis could have done it differently) and it sparks a bit of melee. The end result? It puts the Blues off their game a little, swings the momentum and we kick 7 of the next 9 goals and win the game. Co-incidence? Possibly, probably likely, but I still think Lewis summed up the situation and realised something needed to be done. It worked.

  6. If we get to the finals over the next couple of years, which is looking more likely than not, the MFC should build a statue for Roos. In a decades time his legacy will be spoken of in hushed tones. He dragged our club from being a laughing stock irrelevance to competitive to challengers. The opinions of a couple of disgruntled players matters not one iota.

  8. A great deal of dislike for Oscar, Dom, Angus, and Melksham... I am not a fan of Oscar's output right now but he is doing enough to keep an underdone Frost out. He only played a half at Casey. He is not coming in. No to Spencer - he is no replacement for Hogan and certainly not at Etihad - don't take too many lumberers there... If Brayshaw needs a rest for his concussion (poor bloke) then so be it, but otherwise he stays. Melksham was messy but works hard, he may missout to Hibberd but our half back line needs his run. And Dom helped turn the game in the last - I will go back and watch the tape but I thought he was good and I am sticking to that recollection. Bugg, Kent, and Spencer played well according to reports. OUT: Hogan, Lewis IN: Vince, Kent Happy to go with a smaller forward line at Etihad and trust our skills (which were just terrible on Sunday...).

  9. I believe the AFL should ask Carlton for a 'please explain' as to why two players who were downed, appeared injured and stayed down for a long time and who subsequently were found to have a cracked jaw and concussion post match were not medically assessed immediately. Looks like a dereliction of duty of care issue here. They should be investigated and punished.

  10. As Redleg alludes to, the MRP haven't defined anything about the worth of an open palm, what they have defined is the worth of a delayed onset concussion report from the opposition doctor. Whether it was open palm, a closed fisted right hook or just a plain old kiss on the cheek, none of that matters one iota because they're judging purely on the opposition's account of the consequence, not the action. Might as well just throw the footage in the bin, because that's the worth of it.

  11. I hasten to add that I'm not potting Spencer and in fact think he'd be a more than OK replacement for Gawn if he went down. It's just that I don't think two "first rucks" makes us better.

  12. Salem was always going to be an exceptional player once he got some consistency in his body. So tough to be battling multiple injuries plus a health condition, while trying to get some good consistent footy into you. He has all the hallmarks of a top player; deadly kick, smart decision making, good speed, physically pretty strong for his size, good level of courage. I love having him do the kick outs! Finally someone who doesn't give me small seizures!

  13. A lot of talk on here of ANB getting dropped. He was one of a handful named in Goody's press conference for his performance in the last quarter. It's pretty clear that he, and a couple of others ,are playing a specific role around that half forward line, and when he plays it, we are a better team for it (as can be seen in the last quarter against Carlton). For the first 3 quarters, there were a number of players that were down. ANB was one of the ones that stood up when it counted, and I'm sure that will be part of the reason why Goody won't have him dropped. Also worth not in he laid 5 tackles for the game, so he'll be asked to continue that half forward pressure, as this will translate in to greater opportunities for not only himself, but for those around him.

  15. Something doesn't smell right Whilst most of us have no issue with a suspension these medical reports are rubbish. WTF is delayed concussion..... Concussion that increases the penalty for the MRP but doesn't have the player taken off for the game, if Rowe doesn't miss next week then what is his injury? A headache and nausea are the exact same symptoms for dehydration. Even the hairline fracture to the jaw... whilst this would have had to be supported by an Xray (I would hope) when Cripps doesn't rub the spot or have any medical attention after the incident you can't wonder if it could of happened anywhere in the game. The penalties should be 3 weeks and 2 weeks if either player doesn't play this week and 2 and 1 if they are play this week as CFC have exaggerating the injuries.

  16. According to the news over here, Hogan and Lewis both struck their opponents (fair enough) however Scott Thompson's elbow made contact with Dangerfield's head. FM Are you sure it wasn't Dangerfield's head that struck Thompson's elbow?

  17. Big call. Cripps was crushing us. Someone finally did something. Did it cross the line? Yes. Is he penalised? Yes. Did we know he was this kind of player and recognise we need that to protect our young team? Yes. You mess with the bull you get the horns. But do you think maybe I won't mess so much next time? Yes. It sucks to lose players but I personally am glad we didn't just roll over in that game. It wasn't a millionaires win, it was a street fighters win, and sometimes someone steps over the line.

  18. A senior Officer of the AFL (can't remember who) has the power to ask the MRP to review a case. Now that it is reported that Carlton medical reports reflected their anger, it is a case where a review is warranted in my book. Not much point the AFL having a power if it is never used. The Hogan/Rowe event has the more tenuous link of the 'hit' and 'delayed' concussion symptoms. The club should ask for the AFL for it to be reviewed (and accept the Lewis one). Then the AFL can ask the Carlton doctors why they didn't check Rowe on the ground or at 3/4 time. I know the answer it is either because there was nothing to see or because they didn't want him off the ground for the compulsory 20 minutes. Either way the doctors have their own case to answer. I would like MFC to request the AFL for the Hogan review to show that we won't take it lying down when another club sets out to nail someone. And to test the power of MRP review system.

  19. One thing that hasn't been talked about, was that incredible chain of handball goals that ended with a Dom Tyson dribble goal around the opponent, where it may have seemed like we were of wobbly composure, but what we were really doing was seeking out the best option at each point along the chain, until dom had a clear shot on goal. I think this style lends credence to the idea of going in small next week and not bringing in Spencer and bombing it long to the contest, which would have been negated by Harry Taylor if they play him back anyway. We can certainly use the midfield more to our advantage this week in running waves of players forward in these handball and short kick connecting chains that bring about shots on goal to Jeffy, Hannan or whoever is at the end of that chain. If Geelong are reliant on 2 strong midfielders, then we can rely on a wave of midfielders overwhelming the cats with rapid ball movement and just getting it into that forward line for our players who have clearly shown a great ability to snap through goals on the run. More running shots from 50 wouldn't go astray either in the windless Etihad stadium. Wiedmann and Watts should be enough to contest. Have Hannan, Garlett, Kent and Petracca crumbing. Rest Gawn in the goal square.

  20. I think the co captaincy thing has lit a fire under Jonesy, because I doubt he's ever had two more effective weeks in winning teams, been a major part of winning. He's doing the right things at the right time. He's carried the team surrounded by the worst midfields the game has seen. Now there's talent around him he seems even better. He's also the only one I'm comfortable with kicking on his non-preferred. There was a time way back when that I didn't want him kicking with either foot. The guy is a champion, universally respected by everyone in footy too because of the way he goes about it. No one deserves success more than Jones.

  23. Goodwin comes across as a relationship builder. That was not the charter offered to Roos. He was asked to implement a culture of excellence in an organisation that was totally stuffed. Roos' work was built on people trusting his experience and record. I can understand if some players did not like him too much, but that should be expected. But then I see who wrote the article - and I know for sure that this article is about muck raking and nothing else.

  24. umm, how many times is it necessary to point out that almost no one on here thinks the players did not go too far etc. and need to cop a penalty. The issue is what is an appropriate penalty and the inconsistency and proceses of the MRP.
    4 points
  25. The only issue with which I have a contention is how can it be categorically stated that the delayed onset of concussion, which beset Rowe, was as a direct result of the blow from Jesse. In the course of 4 quarters of football, a scrimmage, bump, a fall to the ground, inadvertent shoulder to the head in marking contest, or a legal tackle could have caused the same issue. The question is, how would anybody actually know for sure? In the absence of taking 'evidence' from the protagonists, it seems patently obvious to me that the MRP system is flawed, when it can hand down a sanction based purely on video footage and a Doctor's report, which could not possibly provide a direct correlation between the incident and the injury concerned

  26. No to Spencer. Theres a reason he didnt pay Round 1 at Etihad even against a very tall Saints side, and he wont play this week. No brainer changes, and gee isnt it nice to finally have depth In - VInce, Kent Out - Hogan, Lewis Smaller mobile forward line this week. Was reading the Geelong forum and they think Lewis being out actually helps us cos he is slow and their midfield is very fast. Not sure about that but we can definitely win this week even with the two big outs.

  27. Looks like a very dangerous manipulation of the rules if clubs are keeping injured players on the ground to avoid the 20 minute rest.

  28. Just watched a replay and Cripps had a few moments during the game where he took heavy tackles where he seemed to hit his head on the ground once (Viney tackle early on) so how can they be sure it was the Lewis hit that caused the fracture??

  29. I never take too much notice of one off games with little other evidence to support a concept. Spencer played the next game against West Coast and then was subsequently dropped for the next 7 weeks before making one further appearance, which happens to be the last game he's played for the club. But yes, Hogan had come back in so Spencer became redundant. And Gawn took his chance. My biggest issue is that Spencer is a liability as a key forward. I'm not interested in the JLT as evidence Spencer could work, because it's nothing more than a light intensity practice match. Spencer is a first ruck, not a ruck/forward or forward/ruck. He's a hopeless key forward. I also don't like Gawn spending too many minutes as a key forward option either, because he's far better kicking goals from the ruck rather than working out from the goal square as a resting forward. Sorry Webber, Spencer won't be selected.

  30. He took 8 contested marks that day. While he's a great mark, I doubt he's done that again since. Also Geelong stopped putting in a ruckman at all against North because they were being beaten by a 2nd gamer, they just roved off him. Chris Scott wouldn't comment on it on 360, so no doubt it'll be a tactical option this week. Playing Spencer would be a complete waste of time and zippy runner on the fast Etihad track.

  31. Not sure if this has been mentioned, but the farce that is the MRP may be an opportunity for everyone at the club to galvanise the "us versus them" mentality developed brilliantly in the Northey era. We were unfashionable but united, and when the likes of Rod Grinter and Big Strawbs O'Dwyer were regularly given holidays by the farce that was the tribunal in those days, it was used as a point of motivation and strength for everyone associated with the club. At the playing level, Hogan and Lewis will be be sorely missed, however, there will be two spots available for someone on the list to come in and play a role. More importantly, the team and the club have a golden opportunity to shove it up the AFL, its archaic "systems" and show that we are deadly serious about our improvement and our place in the football world.

  32. Play Petracca out of FF alongside Weideman. Lower the eyes with a small leading forward-line and make sure Watts and Weideman contest any long balls for spills to Garlett, etc. Watts has been asked by Goodwin to compete in the air, so put the heat on him to play his role and contest high balls. If he does we'll have 2 x 196cm talls plus Hannan at 189cm, Petracca leading out of the square, Kent back in, Garlett and any other rotations. A versatile and unpredictable forward-line. I'd much rather that setup than bringing in Spencer and I'm not fussed about bringing Pedersen in either.

  33. Where does this view of Melksham come from? Melksham was one of our few players who ran hard all day. While others were standing round lazily he was running across time and time again switching Thebes's ball across the ground for us. Offensively he was the best of our back 6 on the weekend. He barely missed a target. Jetta held it down defensively and Melksham held it down offensively. Lack of physicality? This is the same guy who's laid the most bumps in the team thus far this year you're talking about right? How does he lack physicality? I'm getting sick of reading this [censored] about him on here from people who obviously have a pre-conceived view of him and aren't watching him and judging him on his current output. I sound like a broken record but it's just getting ridiculous now IMO Vince in for Lewis. Not sure who comes in for Hogan as it should be a tall. Is Pedo fit yet?

  35. Webber, You are seriously overrating Spencer as a footballer. His skill level doesn't warrant any club recruiting him as a no.1 ruckman. If you watched the VFL finals, he was barely VFL level, and got touched up by Minson and Campbell in the GF. As far as the Geelong game goes, Geelong stopped competing in the ruck against North, which left them with an additional player at stoppages. They'll do the same if Gawn dominates, so it's pointless picking Spencer as an additional ruckman.

  36. this.... In isolation it is what it is. However when you see other incidents that are not cited or penalties that are paltry in comparison ( the Thompson elbow) you are just left absolutely scratching your head. The inconsistency in application is so dizzying that I can't even begin to guess what the MRP will and won't do. This is not woe is me as I believe in "do the crime do the time" but we do seem to end up with the rough end of the pineapple.

  37. Apparently based on the Geelong doctor's report it was deemed to be low impact. As Caro said the Carlton doctors 'did not mince words' in their report to the MRP. So Hogan and Lewis deemed to be medium impact. It is all in the doctors wording, emphasis and the language. eg Carlton doctors could have said something like: Rowe was nauseous and dizzy after the game but we could not confidently say it was a result of the Hogan incident in the 3rd qtr. ...Factual but doubt implied about the cause. Enough doubt to have it ruled low impact attracting a lower penalty? Draw your own conclusions...

  39. So during last week, the media was calling for independent doctors for concussion assessments because of a club doctors conflict of interest in wanting to keep good players on the field. Now we come to MRP and it's the Carlton doctors who are solely responsible for having two of players outed for maximum lengths of 2+ weeks. Bit fishy if you ask me. How about the AFL has an independent doctor that verifies each reported injury on match day? And then follows any injuries up over the next day or two. This society acts as if Doctors are above and beyond bias and corruption, i'm sure it's probably lower in the medical profession, but it's certainly not zero.

  40. The AFL need to review the 'review' process whereby they rely on the club in questions medical report and treat that as gospel. The review needs to be brought forward to game day and essentially concluded before the players and club officials leave the playing venues - 2 hours would be ample time. The MRP can conduct their own medical reviews where an official/club doctor from each club is present to verify the evidence and reach consensus on the findings. All this lagging rubbish is half the problem. It gives people too much time to form opinions which invariably get swayed due to public pressure and added media coverage. Sort it out on game day.

  43. I forgot a couple of random thoughts: I felt sick for most of the second half, dreading a loss with very fiber in my body - much to my kids amusement Garlett was huge. His run down was of course brilliant but to go back and the kick the sealer from the outer edge of his range was clutch Weeds first goal was another glimpse into the future. I love his attack in the air Maybe, in hindsight Gawn vs Kruezer is more akin to Winx vs Hartnell (noting of course that Winx beat Hartnell by 5 lengths at their last head to head - a blood good horse Hartnell, but Win is a once tow or three generation horse)

  44. Browsing the 'odd socks basket' of statistics at AFL Tables the other day, I noticed that Jones features in the top 10 for current players for streak of consecutive matches with 20+ disposals (a still-running streak of 21, against the top current player being Josh Kennedy at a ridiculous 53, then Dangerfield, Laird and Treloar on 30 each). So, captain courageous is also captain consistent! You'll also be delighted to know that Jack Viney is behind only Priddis of current players, for consecutive games with at least 4 tackles. Also, the Tom McDonald haters will be really upset if they go to the rebound 50s, 1%ers and marks current records. Just saying.

  46. Not to get all conspiracy theory on this but where can we see an 'objective' medical report that states clearly the damage done to both Rowe and Cripps? Theres nothing in Carlton's interests to protect our players. If they believe they'll be in the mix for finals against us one competitive advantage is to try and harm us in other games. With the AFL placing so much value on medical reports whose ensuring they are objective and reasonable? I'm legitimately interested if anyone is aware of the process. Also, I hope the club is doing due diligence and asking the AFL for the full medical reports before deciding next steps. The whole process needs to be more transparent if it's being used as a deciding factor.
