  1. Well here is my day, was taking my 3 year old son to his 1st game of footy and 1st train ride, we had to leave 5 minutes into 1st quarter as he felt sick, he then threw up on the train we then got off at southern cross and waited for the wife to pick us up, I got home to watch last 5 minutes. I reakon I still had a better day than most of you.

  2. I went and here are some of my thoughts on the game. The opposition were quite poor. We are a very good contested ball team and killed them at the stoppages. By midway through the second quarter when we were outscoring them into the wind, you could tell they started to become a bit of a rabble. I think Plapp the coach is doing a pretty good job, we are a good team, they were good to watch and there were some nice pieces of play. I hope all the boys that are eligible for finals put their hand up, we will go O.k I think if we have a team of todays quality. Mitchie was good. Since Oliver, Trengove, Salem, ANB and Grimes took most of the stoppage work, they have used Mitchie off half-back. They all look for him and he was a pretty good distributor. It is as good as I've seen him play and he looked comfortable out there. Does it translate to AFL level? Not sure. Salem was also pretty good. They played him on-ball and he and Oliver cut them to ribbons. He was quick but mainly short passes and handballs so didn't get a great deal of penetration. I think it would be good for him to spend a couple more weeks at this level to get some more fitness that playing on-ball will give him and getting the ball in hand a lot. He will get back to AFL level for sure. Oliver is great to watch. He is a big bodied mid and for a kid his age to be doing what he did today against men is very impressive. He won quite a few frees and a couple of his tackles were fantastic. One guy tried to run away from him and he was just so strong as he caught him and threw him to the ground and won the free. As we all know he has lovely quick hands in close and they were great today but he also kicked well and with a bit of space always hit his target. I don't mind him staying at this level as well because he still has a lot to learn and when you get it 30 times a game he will only get better. He could improve and concentrate on forward work, I would like to see him kick a few more goals, he is so quick with the handball but occassionally I would like him to kick it himself. Anyway going beautifully. The best game Weidemann has played. He took about 10 to 12 marks today. One on one he isn't strong enough yet but he was leading more today and I don't know who said he is a bit slow because he is a good leader and took a couple of nice marks out in front of his face at good pace. He gave off a couple of goal assists, one a smart kick back to Joel Smith in a better position and another marking on a lead then dishing off to BenKen who slotted it from 50. Nice goal. I too wondered if he was maybe going to be a bust, but today was the most positive I've been about his prospects. Other days he has been brushed off the ball (this will happen again) but today he had presence and was an important part of our attack. He is a natural forward in the Reiwoldt, Watts mould and he got a few of his marks well up on the wing. He can play very tall. When he builds strength and a tank which looking at him he is an impressive build, so he should, I think he may be alright. I think he may be ahead of Watts at the same age but maybe not as skillfull, but like Watts was as a younger man he may still be a couple of pre-seasons away as well. A lot to like today though. Spenser was up against a big bloke who played a similar game. He was probably one of their best players and honours were about even. Really liked Joel Smith. He is quick, can jump, is tall and is a real chance to make it. Nearly took mark of the century (well not quite) like his old man. Still doesn't know where to go so needs a lot of coaching but handled right and he may do a Jayden Hunt. Heres hoping. Number 15 for Casey is good. Of our tall back men I liked him the most, moreso than Dunn and Garland. All Caseys players played well, Hutchy, number 1 is a good full back. 15 is tall and takes a good grab and he looks young enough that he may not have reached his peak. I would like to see the club keep him and maybe Rookie him. Newton is very confident at this level and played accordingly but like Mitchie when they go up to AFL and they don't have the freedom to create they can get lost. I think they could both make it in the right team because they are good players but they have to find a way to bring their form to the tougher level. Both were great. Trengove has class. He took a great mark and a lovely shot on goal in the third and a couple of nice passes into the 50, I think his best chance at AFL may be as a half forward who can drift forward and kick a goal. Grimes, Garlo and Dunn were all good at this level but all three made critical errors that would have pages dedicated to them if they committed such errors at AFL level. They are who they are, but I can understand how they have been kept as back up only and even how there are a few in front of each one in a queue for AFL duties. I would love to see them win a flag with Casey. Cheers

  3. Nearly in tears. I'm so proud of Jack Watts. After all the pressure and criticism he's endured over the years, he's finally becoming the player and leader we always needed.

  4. Jack Watts simply won that game for us at both ends of the ground all day.

  10. Geelong should have lost to Essendon earlier in the year. They were pitiful and just got over the line. They'll probably make top 4. There are some games you just move on from. This is one of them.

  12. I trust all those who grizzle about not knowing how to win close ones are happy. And those who grizzled about not winning when we should have are also saying winning is the only thing that matters. Painful but better than losing.

  13. 1. We got the four points 2. We deserved the four points 3. That was an unspeakably horrible performance.

  18. I have a European partner who has refused to watch a second of AFL all year despite my contention that it's not all that complicated to understand. Until Round 19, that very second, when she stopped in front of the TV: 'What's going on?' '[censored] if I know.'

  21. "I love Jack, he's one of the best people I've met in footy, and to see him get the reward is really exciting." I love reading this by Roosy. Makes the win feel like it meant something.

  22. Jeez Hogan gets marked hard. After 36 games he'd kicked 83 goals and after 36 games Lynch had kicked 33. Just a lazy 50 difference. Lynch is a gun, but he too took time. Hogan is finding life tougher, but he has a heap of upside.

  23. Me too . Except he was dark skinned and shorter ,far better looking andhad baggier shorts but the surname and streaming down the wing at the G in the red and blue had me yelling Goooooooo Stretchhhhhhheeerrrrrr.

  30. You people are having a laugh. He played a great game on one of the best forwards in the comp. Give it a rest McDonald haters. We need to get him signed, and if he doesn't, it is a disaster for our list going forward... unless you think Jetta should be our CHB next year!

  31. I'm conflicted. It was horrible. But I suspect just about every successful team has had those types of matches to varying degrees over the journey. It's probably not worth a forensic diagnosis. We found a way to win and anyone who has watched us this year knows that we can and have played a lot better. Oliver, Salem, Weideman, etc will make us better. Bag the points and move on.

  32. Could not agree more. It was staggering it wasn't paid. the umpire was right there. Incredible. Not far behind was not paying a free kick to Matt Jones for tripping in the last quarter. Three kicks to half time. Mind boggling. My take on the game? It was woeful but it is amazing how much better it is to have won it and not lose it as i thought was going to be the case at the 27 minute mark. Jack Watts was brilliant in the last quarter and not just because of his match winning mark and goal. There was a contest on the half forward line where he refused to give up and went in for a second, third an fourth effort. Terrific.

  33. For all the idiots potting Hogan - did you miss the bit where he literally couldn't run for the entire second half?

  34. Utter nonsense. He allows Watts to take the third forward. Why do you think Watts was able to outmark his opponent all day?

  35. Hogan - played through injury Brayshaw - building form nicely Tyson - reason we won OMac - best game yet

  36. I'll take it. It was the worst game of football that I've seen in a long time, but we won. Did we deserve it? No, but then we deserved to win last week so it works both ways. I'll let the others go with the negatives as there were plenty and I hate typing them out. Positives - Jack Watts stood up for us today which was fantastic. Stretch was good, after a poor first quarter and a half Vanders was a bit of X-Factor up forward, Petracca showed some flashes of brilliance, Brayshaw seems to be getting back to form and I thought our backline stood up well under pressure, especially considering how poorly we turned the ball over through the middle and up forward. If we play like that next week Hawthorn will MURDER us, but consider this: We now have 8 wins, 1 more than last year, and we still have 4 chances to build on it. Let's hope we can.

  37. Two huge positives not just from this game but for the season and going forward Billy Stretch - hes better than advertised and way ahead of schedule. So calm and collected despite his age and lack of experience. Sam Frost - this guy is a gun backman. For real. Might end up our best defender.

  42. I get what you're saying, but we have 8 wins now. If we hadn't improved then we wouldn't be at that point. Yes, we were abysmal, but the abysmal Melbourne of years gone by would have been beaten today by 8 goals.

  43. Yep. Considering that early last season he was overweight and barely on the draft radar, and lost the weight by basically stopping eating - it's understandable that he's well behind the pace in the fitness stakes. This is where Misson will really earn his pay over the next few years. Oliver is probably the most exciting prospect on the list, with some strong competition. Waiting for him to get to AFL standard conditioning is going to be like counting down Christmas from February when you're 5. Please let him come back near it in season 2017! If he gets injured this pre-season, I am in danger of actual tears.

  44. Just needs to get fitter. His kicking is actually brilliant, top ranked kick in his draft in the testing. At the moment he gets no ball on the outside as I he isn't fit enough. He smashes in with the stoppage and then can't spread to follow up. With added fitness he will be a weapon and IMO could become our best player.

  45. More like Viney lays a bone crunching tackle on Dangerfield, holding the ball. Viney goes back and slots it (Lead out to 94 points). Viney then goes up to Selwood and lets him know all about it, who goes down in history as the first player to get pinged for staging for a free kick. Not content with giving just the free, Selwood's continued sooking is rewarded with 50 meters. Jack dobs it after the siren to bring up the tonne. Unable to allay Selwood's and Dangerfield's tears, Scott seeks out the Geelong doctor to have his jaw put back in, after he dislocates it from his standard continual mouth gaping performance. It's a grand old flag indeed

  46. Okay, so this is what I'd say to this comment... Terry Wallace was talking on SEN tonight about the top 4. He ran through the top 8's remaining draws and from here locked in Hawthorn and Geelong for the top 4. He then predicted it would likely be Adelaide and one of the Sydney teams that would round out the top 4. Can I remind you of the following results: we pushed the Hawks, only to go down by 3 goals; we pushed Adelaide, only to go down by 3 and a bit goals; and we beat GWS. Aside from the Sydney game, where the wet conditions clearly hampered our running game and their mature bodies smacked us up, we have been competitive against those really top sides. To say we're potentially 3 goals off where the premiers are, that is a quantum leap forward. Our improved scoring power and vastly improved ball movement is evidence of how far we've come in 2016. Have people forgotten that in 2015 we barely managed to move the ball with any fluency at any point during the season? Geelong was one of those games, as was the Richmond game. Last year's inability to move the ball quickly was hampered by a totally different game style. So what you're doing is talking pessimistic twaddle again, OD. And let the above be a reminder to the rest of you wrist slashers. Even if we lose tomorrow (we won't - we'll win by 10 goals), there's still marked improvement this season with an extremely young team that will improve again next year. There's too much quality, mixed with inexperience in the team not to grow leaps and bounds in 2017 and 2018.

  47. Haha you're such a drama queen. A loss tomorrow would be nothing worse than a bitterly disappointing loss for a middle of the road team. A win against Hawthorn would be nothing better than a bloody good win for a middle of the road team. Not everything that happens is epoch-defining.
