I can't believe the club has disregarded Stuie's advice and dropped Frost before Pedo !!23 points

Not sure where to put this but as it relates to last Sat this thread will do. http://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/melbourne-demons-president-glen-bartlett-reflects-on-a-tumultuous-24-hours-leading-into-round-1/news-story/4268c29c3f4daaf6efab55ce51f8e52e Its a highly personal story that details the heart wrenching and heartwarming drama that our President and his family endured when his 19 year old son Josh went into cardiac arrest last Friday. After a harrowing week with his health, the next 24 hours were a parent's worst nightmare. Our President with Josh's permission attended the GWS game. Josh was having surgery when the ball was bounced. Shortly after the final siren Glen Bartlett received the call that his son had survived the surgery. It seems the medical team were in overdrive to save Josh. He now has a long road to recovery. Josh must be a quite incredible young man and obviously a Dees supporter. A quote from the article: " Following 35 hours in an induced coma, all he wanted to do was find out the footy score after he woke up." Very moving. It is an amazing story of hanging in there no matter how tough things are. It feels trite to say I wish him well as I don't know him. But I feel inspired by the story. And I hope he makes a full and speedy recovery. It was good to see Jack V in their with him this week. Hope Josh Barlett's experience inspires our team to give it everything they have.14 points

The Essendon player's blood will show up much better on the white. I actually don't mind it.12 points

If we win by 60+ I'll be pretty happy to watch the highlights time and again.11 points

Sitting in the MFC crowd over the past few years, I thought his name was "Get off", rather than "Jack". The last people to complain about this guy hanging on and waiting for his pound of flesh should be the majority of supporters that had a real go at him. Watts has got to be the most mentally toughest footballer to withstand the scrutiny externally (other supporters and media) and internally. I raised Tom Hawkins as an example of a big guy who did nothing for his first 5 years. Hawkins had less expectation and scrutiny, but had much better support and delivery. Get what you can big Jack. You will deserve every cent after copping your whack from quarter-wits who barrack for Melbourne and half-wits that dont. Having said that, balance will be restored in the force, when Watts stands up on GF day with a medal around his neck in the rednblue no.4...in front of the MCC. The curse will finally be laid to rest.10 points

He said that most clubs told him he was too fat in a round about way. At the combine, Goodwin told him if he lost 4 kilos we may draft him. He lost 5.10 points

It's a different team. It's a different vibe. The adjustment is hard but old dee is leading the way. We've named a well rounded, hard at the contest 22 against a team that is coming to terms with a new coach, new gameplan and an array of top up players. I don't care how many Essendon tragics are marching to the ground, this is a game where we should rightfully expect our team to show their superiority and smash the opposition.9 points

I saw Jesse out and about today. He bought a latte instead of a cappuccino. Just another clear sign he's gone.8 points

It's a brilliant move, because there's only 2 possible outcomes: 1) It totally works and turns the show around, hopefully making it a bit more mature and actually about footy 2) It totally flops, Newman does what we all expect and it gets taken off the air Win/win8 points

Frankly I'm amazed by the level of confidence here This is exactly the type of game we have previously lost. Opposition is struggling, coming off a good win, high expectations... Hope I'm wrong and we do smash them, but I'm not so confident.7 points

We're wearing our white away guernsey. It's horrible. We don't look tough in it and it sucks watching the highlights. Not good to use any great marks or goals for branding or marketing when wearing it. I wish they'd wear the red one. Who else hates it?6 points

Interested in seeing Lumumba now that we have team that will run and spread. I reckon half of his problem in past years is that he gets the ball and takes off, realises there is no-one to kick it to down field and then he doubles back running around in a circle. With our new game plan and belief in the ball carrier he may well do some exciting things and be back to his best.6 points

I think we owe them a good smashing after the killed us by 140 point while on the gear in 20136 points

Pleased with those changes. We add run. If we find ourselves in need of a tall defender, and/or Pedersen is getting in Hogan's way, he can be put back there. We've lost arguably the two least AFL ready players in our side and added an experienced rebounder and another young gun mid. Rubbing my hands together now, can't wait til Saturday now.6 points

I have nothing useful to add to this discussion, but decided I should research this word stuie keeps using. Urban Dictionary gave me this... P.S. not having a go stuie, just found some of these humorous. - Primarily the same definition as "lol", but simply for people who want to be different, and original. - Always in lower caps. Used when someone finds something derisory or pathetic. Its use depends on the mood of the user: the more bored they are, the more they'll be inclined to use it. - How douchebags say "lol"; similar to "lolz" or "lawl", but with a greater amount of douchebaggery. Person 1: *says something funny* Person 2: LOL Person 3: LEL Person 1: wtf o.O? Person 2: Oh, don't mind him. He's just a douch*bag. - Lel - Laughing Even Louder. Used to maintain your impeccable reputation of being a one-up guy Person 2: *slaps Person 1* Person 1: Lol.. That wasn't smart... *gets ready to fight* Person 2 : Lel... I think it was.. *gets ready to fight* A fight ensues.. Person 2 Obviously wins because they used the superior variant of Lol. I digress, back to Watts. I like him. Continue...6 points

This is quite amazing we almost made it to April before the clash jumper subject raise it's head. I don't care what we wear when we are winning. For me it is the winning not the clash jumper that counts.5 points

You think that carrying the forward line for a game, playing through a corkie and turning the game in the last quarter is a 'minimum requirement' for someone who will 'never be the player we envisaged and hoped for'? Which is it? I agree that he is not the player we hoped 8 years ago he would be - and that means that performances like last week are 'cartwheel worthy' because they are over and above what you and I have accustomed ourselves to expect from this high HFF role player with great skills. He was our second best player on the ground - third in the game to Phil Davis - he may get Brownlow votes, that is well above what I envision as his 'minimum requirement.' He has Dees fans doing cartwheels because he played a great game. Others seem to be unjustly critical and cynical. I supposed that comes with 8 years of disappointment.5 points

I'll believe Hogan's gone when he's standing at a press conference in his Freo trackies. Until then I'll give him the benefit of the considerable doubt and assume he's staying, enjoy watching his rise, and tune out from the blowhards like Langdon who always chuck this kind of carp out there to try and remain relevant.5 points

On the Scully score Jesse is coming up a zero. Langdon obviously wasn't one of the 28,000 there to witness his celebrations at the siren on Saturday. He is invested in this club.5 points

Personally I think that every Club should have only one jumper and change the colour of their shorts if playing away. If it is good enough for Collingwood it should be okay for every other team, especially when we can wear red socks to avoid confusion. Gone are the days of the mud patches in the centre and goal squares which turned white shorts into black by game's end. It worked for the first century of our game (including the advent of Black & White television) so it would still work now. (But of course advertising revenue would be down, something far more important to the modern game than tradition!)4 points

Haha yeah don't worry about that he just turned 3 but is brainwashed - has been running around the house singing "It's A Grand Old Flag" to himself since I took him to the game on Saturday. Got another one at home too, both signed up within days of birth.4 points

Thats a belter of a interview! Honest and straight forward with no BS. Talking to few bushie officials over the journey and one thing they said about him was his happy character and dry sense of humour. Type of kid you want around your club. Btw its great to hear Nev Jetta take a big mentoring role on the kid. Its what leadership is all about and just confirms why Jetta is such an important member of our football club.4 points

You should have stuck to the 'not many players at the MFC have had to earn games these last ten years' argument. Not mention Martin at all. And that argument is fundamentally true. We have not had a list capable of keeping players honest. But that is not the fault of Watts, it is the fault of the club. You have to pick 22 every week. But to say that Watts has played what 70-80 'unearned' games is unfair to the bloke and the up and down seasons he has had. He didn't suddenly flick a switch for his solid two months last year, he has played about half a dozen good games every year for the past half decade. Except he doesn't back it up in the subsequent games he earns with those performances. Maybe we should go through the archives and collect all the selection threads and use the subjective judgment of Land to see how many he earned?4 points

I hold fears that Jesse will leave as Fremantle will likely offer him the whole dock. However, Jesse seems to have made some great relationships with the players and staff and seems to be over the homesickness he experienced when he suffered his back injury. If we keep performing well throughout this year and next, it will provide Jesse with further incentive to stick with us for the long haul. Regardless of what happens, let's just enjoy the ride and what comes with it.4 points

[censored] the contract talk, surely this must be a big chance for his first major bag. I'm thinking 7 goals.4 points

It's a pretty loose definition of "gifted". For him to have not deserved it, in my mind, there has to be someone to have equally deserved a run and not got it for the equation to balance. He may have been the best of a bad lot; the best of a bad lot is nonetheless still the best. If your argument is that Stefan Martin should have played as a forward instead of Watts, then I'm pretty comfortable that your argument is shot. Firstly in the majority of games Martin played for Melbourne, Watts also played, so you could hardly say they were competing. Secondly, Martin was bloody hopeless as a forward and that's why he was moved on. He needed to be a first ruck.4 points

Who would you have played instead for the games he was gifted?4 points

Langdon is a nut. I wouldn't put any credence in the drivel that spews forth from his mouth.4 points
-
No he hasn't. He was gifted games early. But he has been 'breaking out' and 'turning the corner' since 2011... We have the memory of a goldfish when it comes to this bloke. And we listen to our mates who support other teams who circle jerk with each other and wax lyrical about the 'sh!t blonde kid at Melbourne', the 'sissy', the 'woman in number 4.' Every year he shows us what he can do and then spasmodically reverts back to inconsistency and underperformance. It is entirely unfair to say his 115 games are largely unearned.4 points

I'm not gonna lie, there is a nagging voice in the back of my head warning me not to get ahead of myself on this and to be prepared for us to somehow choke on this game. But there is a more important image that pops into my head, the image of Viney, Hogan, Oliver, Watts, Gawn etc and the look on their face after the GWS win. They desperately want that feeling again, and I think the competitive beasts we have at our club will accept nothing more than our best on the weekend, and if that happens we'll win big. This game is a golden opportunity for Hogan, who until the 4th quarter has been a bit off kilter, to regain his form and confidence. I hope the club builds on Clarry's minutes and unleashes him against the depleted Dons mindfield, and I wanna see Jack Viney smash everyone one of them into the turf (he can go a little easier of Jamar if he likes). As Jako said, this game will be won/lost/won big between the ears of the Dees squad.4 points
