  2. I am here in 11th District with my girl-friend and our 3 mth old MFC supporter. We were in a restaurant 300m from the Bataclan attack when it happened and had just driven past the venue in a Uber. Was super impressed with Parisians, shops open this morning, even across the road from the theatre, life going on, people sad but not cowed. French Police, etc, were amazing last night, very calm and professional, all doing their job. Love this place. Was here for a party for the weekend 1st trip since new supporter was born... Also was sad to see scooters and bikes locked to fence outside theatre, obviously belonging to people who can't collect them.

  4. Another reason I'd like Parish is that he's exactly what we need. He complements our midfield perfectly.

  5. FF Kennedy Weideman Garlett HF Petracca Hogan Kent I might be completely off here, but part of the reason I think we'd take Weideman if available is because at some point I believe Hogan will make a move to CHF. Dawes and Pederson clearly don't cut it as quality CHF let alone FF which is why Hoges played much of the year out of the goal square. But given his talents and attributes, I reckon he could offer a whole lot more if played at CHF. The amount of times I saw Melbourne players ignore a leading Dawes was actually quite embarrassing for the guy. Unfortunately he just doesn't have the hands, foot skills nor the smarts to play that position well enough and Pedo is really just on our list for depth. Hogan at CHF would be near impossible to stop. His tank is enormous. His field kicking is as good as anyone's his size. (Better than most of our midfielders). His marking I don't need to comment on. He would be a nightmare for teams in that position and it would give our mids a whole lot more confidence when on the counter from defence. Weideman is the FF who is aggressive in the air and a goal kicker. No fuss. His attributes best suit the position. Just your stay at home FF. It's clear he'll fill out and be a very big boy too which is important. That's the vision I see. Could be wrong. But I feel like Hogan could be let off his leash if we find that true stay at home FF.

  7. He is one of the best recruits that we've had in a long time. He kicked 40.31 this year, which, as you said,is an incredibly high number of scoring shots for a small forward in a poor team. Compare that to some of the best small forwards in the competition during the season (no finals): Jeff Garlett: 40.31=71 scoring shots Chad Wingard: 53.27 = 80 scoring shots Eddie Betts: 58.24 = 82 scoring shots Hayden Ballantyne: 15.13 (only 15 games, but with that average over 22 games he would've kicked 22.19) = 41 scoring shots Luke Breust: 45.17= 62 scoring shots Mark LeCras: 41.25= 66 scoring shots When you factor in the Inside50 stats for each of these teams, it only makes Garlett's stats more impressive. If he can sort out his accuracy, he's got the potential to be the most productive small forward in the game.

  8. Probably one who popped up last year and surprised with his sudden impact was Aaron Vandenberg. With his limited pre season due to his recovery from a shoulder reconstruction I certainly didn't expect him to come and make an impact straight away. so for me I am going to go for a bit of a Smokey and say Mitch White will be my surprise packet for 2016. I know he is on the rookie list but don't be surprised if a spot opens up for him if he has a good summer on the track. Didn't look out of place at all in fact he already looked like he had already played 50 games. Big body 188cm 88kg half back who is a fantastic kick of the footy and could potentially push up onto a wing. Someone like him could really make us a better side off half back with the sling shot from a half back so I am hoping he has a big summer and he shows us what an important player he will be for the future.

  11. You're getting confused. Her phantom draft is well researched and she speaks to a tonne of people. It's not overly surprising she got 9 from 10 last year, BUT that is separate and different to her player rankings, which I don't have much time for.

  13. Can I please just point out that no matter the colours or logo, the cotton polo will never ever match the polyester jumper. It is chemically impossible for a synthetic and a natural fabric, let alone when one is woven and one is knitted, to match 100% in colour. Even more so when one is yarn dyed and one is screen printed. Especially vivid colours like red. Yes you can get it much better than in the above image, but it will never be exactly the same. Fashion lesson over. Carry on.

  15. Alrighty, first off as I type this I'm going to be a little late. Not that it honestly bothers me too much, I had to do a bit of running around this morning, but I wont be missing too much more than the warmup should the boys actually start on time. Perhaps they might be a little bit later than that. Okay, so I get here at 10:00, a tad late with the almost as fashionable entrance that Russell Westbrook assumes in the NBA, laptop bag strapped over my shoulder and all - but Im told I didnt miss much all I missed really is the warmups and one of those six minute runs that the boys do. When I get here the boys are walking around the oval, and then slowly gets to a bit of a jog. In the rehab group on the other side of the oval are Hoges (I was wrong about Monday by the way, it wasnt management, hes got a bit of a finger issue at the moment) and Petracca of course. What it looks like they are doing is that both are running and doing a bit of weaving before marking the footy, and theres also a bit of work to do with some hurdles as well by the looks of things. As we were then with the main leaders leading the way around the oval. McDonald and Viney are up the front, and the boys look like they are changing into their footy boots so that they can start using the ball in vastly different conditions to when I was here Monday the thorough Monday afternoon heat and gust replaced by Friday the 13th cold, wet and breeze. Its not a pretty day by any means but this provides an early season indicator given this will be the conditions the boys will be facing come the 2016 season. The boys go for this weird kind of run around part of the oval. I couldnt properly explain it except for its pretty brief. Afterwards theres a short kick of the footy. Its a good chance to see whos up here and training. Max Gawn is here and hes having a run around in his quest to make Todd Goldstein look like Paul Johnson an ultimately difficult task. Ive already mentioned McDonald being here, dont think Garland is here, while Brayshaw after missing Monday is here too training. The whistle goes the kick of the footy is all too brief. I hear loud noises, including a couple of mentions of over the shoulder as the boys assume positions for the next drill, with a whole heap of cones. This is an interesting drill. Theres groups of four in this drill, with a couple of players weaving around cones, one with the footy and one without, whereas another player comes in to try and tackle said player weaving with the footy. At the moment no one is really missing the mark, thats because the player with the ball seemingly runs straight into the man whos going after him. Again its all too brief and they move around again, this time to the edge of the square. Again this is another kind of pressure drill Theres about three players in vests and another three who go out and run to get the footy in kind of a simulation drill. There isnt a whole lot of pressure from those wearing vests, which is either disappointing or what is expected of them from the fitness coaches, I couldnt tell you which is which. From the ball users perspective there are a couple of handballs which miss the target and their trajectory is poor. Again (and this seems to be the theme of the day) the drill is very brief. Meantime over at the near end of the ground, Jesse up for a kick at the park tomorrow? Hogan and CP5 are having set shots. Hogans run up is even more painfully slower and more edgy than what it was last year with the stutter even more obvious you could make a verse about it in Stutter Rap. Meantime Petracca misses a sitter from about 35 out on a slight angle and hes pretty [censored] about it he knows he should do better. You can notice the higher standards though, maybe in another year, specifically 2013, the boys would have a laugh about it, but you can see the want to succeed now. Anyway, with less jibberish, the boys begin their next drill. The first group nearest is stopped and the coach over there (cant work out who it is from a distance) mentions that it shouldnt be too much of a handball game. There are a couple of average kicks I wont lie about that, especially one from I think Smith who just skids it along the ground, its a true shank. On the far end of the ground the drill is still going and theres a few kicks which are just hitting the mark with authority. There was one such instance where Harmes lead excellently to the ball and it hits him on the chest as he jumps, didnt catch who actually kicked it to him but thats always a good sign looking ahead. Theres a clear difference between the two groups the group nearest to where Im positioned are moving it slowly and with a bit of hesitation, but the group on the opposite side of the ground are taking it on big time. Its a massive difference and the group nearest to us are out to rectify that when they begin again. Rehab Hulk and CP5 are running laps now. CPs endurance has massively improved since this stage last year and hes running with Crossy, whos going to be massive for his ultimate development in being able to run all day. The conditions change again as the boys head into the next drill suns out guns out not quite. Not for me anyway. The drill here is that the boys start off in a circle, then the boys spread out around the ground and become targets. Matt Jones scuffs the first kick, one which is wide of the mark to Terlich, which sees the vest team get possession of the footy. In fact the first two times the groups go out, it is characterised by missed handballs and a couple of scuffed kicks here and there. Its a little disappointing but then again the team with the vests are putting on good pressure much the same. The teams change and immediately theres a shift. Where the first team tried to move the ball too quickly, theres more a sense of surety with this team as the boys take a bit more time moving the ball, but not too slowly. The boys assess their options a lot more carefully and as a result, are able to transfer the footy from one end of the ground to the other. The second movement is even more impressive the team with the footy catch out the team with the vests through straight and direct ball movement, which goes nothing short of perfect until the final kick which drifts away late and hits the post. It was delightful to watch and hopefully theres more of that throughout the season as the boys cut through teams like a hot knife through butter. Now thatd be something. The boys, in the meantime, continue their drill, and while the early stages look reminiscent of the boys at their worst (what I mean is that when they handball backwards and they panic mercilessly) whats impressive is that they are beginning to realise that handballing to a bloke under pressure just doesnt work. Ever. Its Terls who sets this one up, sidestepping a couple of blokes and then delivering a good ball. In the meantime, CP5 leaves early. Im assuming therefore that OKC and his beloved Russell Westbrook are playing then. The boys start again. Salem gets the ball and somehow manages to break a Viney tackle. Not too often you get to say that but thats a representation of the standing of the bloke. In fact, every time Salem is getting it, he is using it extremely well and its so good to watch. Just nails almost every kick basically, no matter whether its a long kick or a short one. The boys then stop for a short break, be it either for drinks, to have a chat, or to watch Jesse Hogan walk off. Either one of the three. The boys then split up into groups of three, one with green vests, orange vests and one group without vests. Its two teams at the moment one sits out. Its the team without vests sitting out at the moment, leading to the ultimate See My Vest Cup (Byrnes coaching, anyone? Would be appropriate) which ends briefly after a miscued kick which just skids along the ground. Im assuming that the two just go at it until theres a mistake one which comes in the second game between orange and plain when a kick is spoiled well (to applause and cheers) by Gussy, the ultimate hard working kid. All three teams cycle through and we go again. Green team is unable to penetrate orange teams defensive structure. This time a loose kick is intercepted by (by the looks of it) King. The defensive structure of the two other teams is interesting. Plains defending is manic and high-energy, however some loose defending from Harmes brings their strategy undone, while Green seem to be loose, an ambitious kick into the corridor to Salem is quickly intercepted by two Green defenders. The drill then ends for either a pause or a switch to another drill. As it turns out, its a pause. After a brief restarting of the drill the boys start off again they stop almost as quickly, and then have a lengthy chat. They move down the ground and have another chat? Im assuming theres a bit of set shot work here because of the way this drill seems to be set up. This isnt the case. Instead theres only like four blokes actually having set shots, a big group having snaps and another small group crumbing and running in to goal from about 25-30 out. Meantime nothing has changed with Brayshaw in his training habits, always the prankster and always talking [censored] whenever someone goes past and has a set shot. On this occasion Stretch is copping an earful. Meantime theres a group with Crossy running around King, Frost, Kent and Kennedy. Dunno why they arent with the main group. As to be expected, Kent and Kennedy lead the way with Frost trailing and King a little bit further back in these running drills. This has been the way of the world for about 15 minutes so I have a geeze around and look at the world. While the training gear is somewhat up to scratch for a number of people its not quite up to scratch in other areas. For example, the cloth which covers the pavilion. Im not sure about you but you would THINK for a club which has worked hard to develop its logo that by now theyd have developed a cloth with the new logo on it in preparation for the release. Thats not the case. Old Schwabbolly-dobbolly-wobbollys logo is still taking pride of place. In the middle a beep test being sorted? It doesnt seem to be the case because after a short while with measuring et al, the cones are being taken away. Maybe they are otherwise preparing for it to be done in a future session (Monday?) Regardless theres a few at the moment who are on their way out. Its also my cue to bugger off myself as I look for a spot of lunch and either perhaps get to enjoy some old reruns of the footy or perhaps the cricket coming up as well (although thats not until later).

  24. So, since you seem to be more confident in your knowledge of these than the French security forces at the moment, what are the ‘merits’ of this chain of atrocities, Daisy? I’d have thought that Moonie’s point is that we might need to get beyond knee-jerk religious labels before the particulars of the Paris attacks are identified and understood. If that’s sitting on a fence, so be it but I can’t see how it’s any more intellectually ‘lazy’ than Biff’s comment, which might be a good one liner but isn’t anything other than that. Meanwhile, back in the world: ‘The France midfielder Lassana Diarra has revealed that his cousin, Asta Diakité, was killed during Friday night’s attack. ‘Diarra played 80 minutes of the match against Germany. In a statement posted on Twitter, he said his cousin was like “a big sister to me … In this climate of terror, it is important for all of us who are representatives of our country and its diversity to speak and remain united against a horror that has no colour, no religion.” ‘Diarra’s team-mate Antoine Griezmann, meanwhile, said that his sister Maude had escaped the attack at the Bataclan concert hall which left at least 87 people dead.’ (Guardian Online)

  28. My info on this is that Jesse's manager is doing his job, well aware big offers are going to come, wants jesse to put in another really good year and then squeeze out the best possible deal for his client, could sign for 5 years at a million right now and then find out 12 months later it might have been 8 years at 1.5 when the MFC were a bit more worried. all indications seem to be that he'll stay with us, but he still has 2 years to run and an extension isn't a priority. He's looking at potential forward partners from the draft, headlining the clubs re-branding, very much becoming the face of the club, you don't do all of those things if you aren't interested in hanging around.

  30. We have to own the city of Melbourne and the club made a great job of the launch yesterday. Similarly we have to make melbourne a destination so that Jesse and others want to stay and gun players from other clubs will want to come to us. The reality is we haven't been able to attract the Dangerfield's of the comp to Melbourne. Success, a high profile in melbourne and and a great group of core home-grown talent might get us there. Its no 5 minute fix but like most things PJ does it is a long term sound strategy being built piece by piece. People ridiculed Glen Bartlett with his New York Yankees talk but the idea is the right one. We owned the town yesterday and we need to do it on a more consistent basis. We need to own it during footy season and there is no quick fix.

  32. Those collars looked absolutely ridiculous. Add in the colour issues (as already mentioned), the terrible and awkwardly placed emblem (I know, I know, some of you liked it), and the ridiculous stars on the back and it really made for an awful guernsey. It's quite impressive how badly we managed to stuff up a red V on a navy blue jumper.

  33. I like that it's ditched the historical elements just for simplicity and just for the sake of moving on. Kind of reminds me of the clippers' logo change with big and bold letters. The old one wasn't as strikingly red and blue, it was too glossy and the red could look pinkish and the blue not dark enough

  34. Which particular flag do we sing about? Which old acquaintances shouldn't we forget? Not EVERY heart beats true for the red and the blue.....there are 17 other clubs. The second verse is horribly dated. I say add a second verse about Melbourne Demons trying their guts out as a proud team...that would make the first verse more relevant.

  35. As some know, I live in Paris. Nowhere near where this happened, though I know it well. My wife's office is in the 10th, we were due to go in today and put together some Ikea shelving (don't ask ...). My son has school this morning, even though it's Saturday, but that has been cancelled. Hard to think of what kids must feel growing up amongst these kinds of events. Around us, it's very very quiet. We live near an RER station, and there's usually a stream of people coming and going, even moreso on a Saturday. Not this morning. From what I can see, no-one can quite grasp what's gone on. The local press and media are primarily just trying to catch up on events, there's very little analysis or reflection. But you would have to say that it's something of a game-changer, and I suspect that our idea of what a "normal day in Paris" entails is about to change. Tragic. Hard times.

  37. the song is a part of the reason we have not kept up. singing of a flag doesn't do it. singing of a brother hood now that does it. the spirit of mateship, whether in the trenches, or physically on the field of footy, its the spirit of comradeship not of a 'flag' that's important. "all for one, & one for all",,,, team unity.

All that needs to be done (and this could be optional) is insert Melbourne (chanted) in the gap at the end of each pair - that would work without compromising the lyrical/musical integrity of the song: It's a grand old flag it's a high flying flag, It's the emblem for me and for you, (Mel - bourne) It's the emblem of the team we love, The team of the red and the blue, (Mel - bourne) etc etc

  44. I confess to missing the start of #demonbracketclassic And now I see that Andy Goodwin didn't even make the main draw...can I vote retrospectively (and often)? It's an outrage...Andy was a cult hero, a hero, my hero in his time at the Dees. I used to arrive early to watch the twos from the top deck of the Southern Stand when he was playing...no-one was there so you could hear the players swearing, and the thump of fist on leather as Andy repelled attack after attack with his stoic defence. One day he was 40m in the clear on the half back flank, Southern Stand side at the Punt Road end, a high floater approached and he proceeded to use the double-fisted punch to send it about 25 rows back! All on his own, classic. No-one was at the ground yet (except me and my sister in the top deck) so it took an attendant about 5 minutes to find the ball and return it to the boundary umpire. One day after another punch from behind some other bloke (top deck, Southern Stand) stood up and bellowed "ANDY"...I like to think he's a Demonlander. Years later I modelled the defensive aspects of my game in the Murrumbeena twos on Andy's play. Always team first. I was just like a shorter*, fatter, slower, less fit, less skilled(!) version of Andy Goodwin. And now I missed my chance to vote...shattered. Please Supermercado...add one vote to his score * I might actually be just taller

  47. Loved reading how you all began following Melbourne! My mum followed Geelong, but she was cunning. She and dad each led separate music groups. They'd work Friday & Sat nights plus Sat arvo.. Needing somewhere safe my bro & I could go unsupervised, in '54 she began taking us by train from Mentone to Richmond, walk across to the G for our game, then home. By '56 we were mad Demon fans, she thought it safe enough for a responsible 7 year old and an almost 5 year old to go on their own, so off we went. The first time i paid for us to enter: Chap running the gate said, "where are your parents, you can't come in with a child, you're too young yourself! We spoke well to the supervisor & they let us in as long as he stayed with me all the time. And a great time it was at most home games for years! Good times. 2. first favourite player? I idolized the coach, heard Norm Smith speak, met him, was so impressed with how he got such a team effort. Tunbridge, Thorogood, Laidlaw, Ridley, Bluey, Hassa, Dixon, Barassi, Tassie & Bob Johnson, John Lord and others. 3. Best moment: Those premierships were hard to beat! 4. Worst moment: Smiths sacking & RDB's leaving.
