Made me giggle. Titus O'Reily @TitusOReily 1h1 hour ago What's exciting about the Dangerfield news is that it shows people can still find a job in Geelong.13 points

A PRICE FOR BEING ADAM GOODES by Whispering Jack Adam Goodes first came to my notice during the TAC Cup finals of 1997. It was a year in which Melbourne, having performed miserably, had finished last and was about to receive the first pick in the AFL Draft. The 17 year old Goodes starred for the North Ballarat Rebels kicking six goals in a best on ground performance against the Dandenong Stingrays. All eyes that day had been on Travis Johnstone, a Stingray player described as the "Rolls Royce" of that year's draft pool. I was overseas in New York at the time of the draft, the internet was just starting to take off and there was nowhere to simply log on and find out who was selected. It took until we embarked on the Qantas flight from LA and I was offered a copy of a day old Australian newspaper that I finally discovered that Melbourne got the Roller and I was equally surprised that Goodes had been drafted by Sydney with a pick as low as No. 43 overall - their third round draft pick. It was an inspired selection but also a clever one. In those days, clubs could only select one 17 year old player. The Swans had selected Jason Saddington with their first pick and waited for others to make their selections, allowing them to take the last of the 17 year olds with such a low choice. It was another year and a half before Goodes would make his debut senior appearance after spending 1998 in the reserves. When he finally made his debut, he quickly leapt ahead of the rest of the pack of his young contemporaries and in the end outlasted all of them (Chad Cornes who retired two years ago came closest to him in longevity). He was the last Rising Star of the last century and he went on to hold an elite place in VFL/AFL history as a dual Brownlow Medallist, dual premiership player, four-time All-Australian and a member of the Indigenous Team of the Century. He also holds the record for the most games played for an Indigenous player - 372 games. He also kicked 464 goals and his playing achievements include:- * 2 AFL Premierships (2005, 2012) * 2 Brownlow Medals (2003, 2006) * 3 Bob Skilton Medals (2003, 2006, 2011) * 4 times All Australian (2003, 2006, 2009, 2011) * 3 times Sydney leading goalkicker (2009, 2010, 2011) * AFL Rising Star 1999 * Indigenous Team of the Century But that's not all ... When I arrived home from the States, my family had taped the AFL's draft and when I got around to watching it, I was taken as much by the small snippets of the Goodes family as I was by Melbourne's Rolls Royce pick up and the others like Nathan Brown and Guy Rigoni who were taken with later picks and who also turned out to be good players with the Demons. Of course, their careers all paled into insignificance next to that of Goodes, the shy awkward looking young kid whose family was a single parent family with three young boys (the father had long ago drifted away interstate). His mother's story was one of deprivation, much like that of many of her indigenous contemporaries but how proud must Lisa May Goodes have been that day when her son Adam was chosen to play in the country's highest sporting competition? How proud must she have been to see him achieve those many honours in the almost two decades that followed? And how proud must she have been that her son did not stop at achieving on the football field but that he stood up for the rights of his people and was named Australian of the Year in 2014 for his community work through the Go Foundation and advocacy against racism? We can never divorce ourselves from who we are. Adam Goodes did for his people the best that he could and much more than anyone could have expected on that day eighteen years ago when he picked to play for the Sydney Swans but he also paid a price for being Adam Goodes. You see, we all have our flaws and the same goes for kings, prime ministers and sporting heroes. Both on and off the field, a player can do things that might not please all. And the crowd can boo you if it likes, for the odd act or mistake that you might later regret, they can be angry that you've stood up for what you believe in, that you've achieved more in a single day than they have in their dreary, miserable lifetimes. They paid their admittance so they can even boo and then feign indignation that you had the gall to react to racism in your work place. But when they do it constantly and incessantly and let others who do much the same and in many cases far worse off the hook, then it's something else altogether. ... The price that the Sydney Swans paid for Adam Goodes was pick 43 in a long ago national draft. They received great value for their choice. All of us did.13 points

I don't understand the phrase "integrity of the AFL"12 points

Not a big fan of the creeping lack of respect that has risen up about players of late. Maybe we do it this odiously every year - I am just not a big fan TBH. Don't see the need for it.8 points

2 years of no games and he has the nerve to knock back a contract at the pies and request a trade. You've done nothing mate!7 points

Nev is currently in WA now with his family. Plus couple of hours flight for Roosy who use to do it every week for Fox.7 points

Gibson, Hale, Frawley, Gunston, Burgoyne, Lake, McEvoy, Ceglar, etc, yes the Hawks developed their own talent.6 points

I'm not either 'rpfc', and we also get it too much during the season with terms like spud etc thrown about. We can discuss things and still be respectful of the players and others opinions. This whole trade period now is heading in a way that doesn't sit well with me. I don't like players not fulfilling their contracts and I don't like how clubs don't show respect to the players. As for the media, I think they have had a big part in setting the agenda and a lot of the supporters have gone along for the ride. The player movement thing is becoming bigger news than the game itself which is a real pity.6 points

Yeah I don't know. Bullsh1tters are usually pretty easy to spot - they're usually the ones who big-note and try to go into too much detail in an attempt to sound convincing. This guy isn't pretending to know an exorbitant amount, and it's a plausible story. Certainly doesn't mean it's a done deal but it's nice to be talking about a potential A-grader possibly coming to the club again rather than spuds like Melksham and Bastinac.6 points

People still think we're a chance? Holy crap. Save yourselves the heartbreak. Accept it and move on. He's going to Geelong.5 points

Ox stated in SEN that Melbourne are seriously chasing a couple of players up North. If we could manage a Bennell and Redden double this off season that would be massive for the club...not sure how, but get it done dees!!!5 points

I know. I was promised it was just going to be hot 30 year old chicks with time on their hands and a love of the Melbourne Footy Club. Alas, life throws curve balls.5 points

Game analyst. Should have advertised the job on this site. Plenty of takers at half the price.5 points

Or maybe its just because Hogan won Rising Star and Vince Best n Fairest. Someone had to state the obvious5 points

Howe's got an opportunistic manager who's taken big bets on Howe's next contract, potentially at Howe's expense, and definitely at the club's expense. I reckon Howe's marked his ticket with the club as a result.5 points

Redden and Bennell this trade period would be great. And a decent back up ruck/forward. With Prestia to follow next year. We'd then have an extremely strong list.5 points

They share an interest (get paid by chemist warehouse) about prostate problems. It's all become so clear now, like taking a pee after drinking 10 litres of water. Bennell will be a Demon.5 points

A guy claimed to be Nev Jettas best mate just wrote on bigfooty that apparently nev and Roosy have met with Harley and despite reports that we aren't interested expect Bennell to become a demon. I know its on bigfooty and half the time its a load of [censored] but... OH FK IT GET HIM TO THE DEES!!5 points

well if that includes reminding them to turn up for the first quarter on game day, them i'm all for it4 points

old man wasn't quick, but he was tough as old boots, bled red and blue, and could find the football. if jake ticks all those boxes, i'd like to add him as a rookie pick over some other anonymous player. there's still got to be room for romance in footy, and the idea of viney, stretch and lovett being in our side makes me a happy camper. i just wish dollars boys had shown some aptitude for the sport. any idea of how jimmy's lad is progressing?4 points

Howe would be exciting for teams up north trying to draw crowds. We wpuld be exciting with more midfield dash and speed. Simple i say.4 points

I know it's unlikely but how amazing would it be if he came to the Dees! Cats fans are already writing messages welcoming him, it would be great for them to all have egg on their faces.4 points

Not sure if this has been mentioned and i don't have time to trawl through 49 pages but, I received our membership renewal today and there is an option to have a player of your choice on your membership card. There are 10 to choose from but alas, no Jeremy Howe. Ominous4 points

Honestly, why? If you're finished with the conversation, you are quite welcome to stop reading it.4 points

The word is that he was asking for over 300k a year to stay at the Pies. Seems like he is just a little on the arrogant side for a bloke who hasn't been able to get on the park for 2 years. Seems like the perfect fit for a club like St. Kilda.4 points

Its almost like coaching is the same as teaching just with different content. Amazing.4 points

Totally agree. Used to have a small affinity for the Cats due to the amount of brilliant players who couldn't crack it for a flag. Was happy they won in 2007. That affinity was blown out of the water in 2008 when i went with my girlfriend (now wife) to Geelong. Walking to the ground we both had our Demons scarves on when there was a lady with a tin rattling for homeless kids of Geelong. So i put a dollar in and even though she may have meant it as a joke she said "Thanks for that. i hope your team loses today." That put me off the Cats and now i cannot stand them. Those smug, moronic, Billabong wearing flogs.4 points

Follow up post from old mate: Basically Nev will be his mentor at the club. His work in this area I know for fact is amazing. Can't comment on Harley's state of mind etc but depending what we have to give up the upside of this deal is massive. Also told Watts will be staying due to lack of interest. Howe gone to Gold Coast. Not relevant but Lewis Jetta will be at West Coast4 points

The HUN is now running with the story that the Crows are all but certain to match any offer Geelong makes for Dangerfield, forcing them to do a trade. I absolutely LOVE this. Not only do I think it's the right thing for the Crows to do but it makes so much more harder for those arrogant handbaggers to get him. I'm stoked the Crows have got the guts to stick up for themselves and at least try and get the fairest deal possible.4 points

My honest opinion is i would put him in the same boat as Malceski, Lumumba, Byrnes boat. These players are made to look good with a strong team around them but struggle big time when reality kicks in and they are in a bottom 8 team because their teammates around them aren't as good. So in other words... NO4 points

Family reasons to move to Geelong might be: -His highschool girlfriend who is about to become his wife, wants to move back. -She is the daughter of an ex Geelong Mayor -His mother and aunt work for Frank Costa Geelong has been limited in the salary offer of a reported $800k by what they pay Selwood. But with the above list of connections who knows if any verbal undertakings have been made for him/his family's life post football...of course they can't be written as they would come into the salary cap.3 points

Jennings seems eminently qualified and its a bonus that he has worked with McCartney and Goodwin before. Good to see our player development and education programs' activity lifted and that players reacted really well to it: Quote: “Throughout the year we started to introduce a number of changes to the way the coaches delivered information to the players, which had positive feedback from the players and tangible outcomes on game day. “We will be making some further changes next season to continue creating the best learning environment for our players and ensuring their development.” I see this as another example of Roos stepping into the background and allowing Goodwin to set up his own support team and structure. By this time 2017 Goodwin will have his own team in place. Love that Roos is giving him the space and authority to quietly build this outside the glare of media spotlights.3 points

Blue collar worker who clearly does a job on his man defensively, verified by his standing among insiders at Melbourne. Been a rock for sometime, a warrior during hard times. The knocks on him - or constructive criticism - seen as vitriol among 'landers, some of whom choose not to comment, are the other non strings to his bow some would like to see that are essential in a team moving forward from the mediocre mess of the last decade. Side ways kicks, ineffective disposal, handballing to teammates under duress/pressure are characteristics some would like to see cleaned up and improved. As I've stated if the FD see him as a tradeable option with value - Roosy has stated there are no guarantees in terms of improving the list (every player is tradeable) - in order to improve the list, let him go.3 points

I never wanted them to win anything. My mum's side of the family are all Geelong. I always go with my MFC supporting sister and dad down the Geelong highway. I've always found their supporters incredibly smug and condescending. Particularly, down there.3 points
