Yeah I've got no idea why more people don't contribute to Demonland.4 points

I think it's easy to skim over stuff you don't want to read for whatever reason. Most members have other posters whose content they like, perhaps Saty for training (!) or WJ for his feature articles or others who have links with interesting sources. Sane people will also have numerous posters on ignore, I'm sure I'm on a few. I dislike the "if you don't like what I say the don't read it" mentality of some, but IMO it's not hard to skim over what doesn't appeal rather than let it get to you. This place would be pretty sterile if we eliminated all humour, sidetracks, slap downs, giffs, etc, particularly in the off season. Anyway, there will be more members log in once the season starts and we get a couple of wins on the board. My New Years resolution is to minimise personal and negative comments towards other posters. Except towards BBO, because he's a right [censored].4 points

It'd be easier just to buy him the AFL Global Pass. You can watch all the games live and on demand on tablets and phones. I've got the AFL Live app and can hook my phone up to the TV.3 points

Agreed - I'd like to recant my earlier post and offer my wholehearted apologies to BBO - I really don't know what I was thinking when I wrote that! I know they're alpacas, not llamas3 points

That article sums up the Hird supporter camp position: everyone is against him because he is great and there is no evidence otherwise. I'd suggest he should be sacked purely for his involvement in the "uncontrolled pharmaceutical experiment" that was identified in the initial report (and in Essendon's own internal report). He was in charge. He failed a duty of care. Isn't that all he needs to lose his job?3 points

Just been looking at some nostalgic games in those "Heady" finals of 87 One of the last run through banners depicted a caricature of Rob Flower and the words inscripted "For You" I would love the footy department and the cheer squad to recreate this banner as a worthy tribute the indelible legacy which Robert Flower left on not only all of us but the Melbourne Football Club! Hard to imagine the players not being moved to a super effort with some "Added" Incentive! Thoughts?2 points

My point about them running near capacity is to say that they are nearing their ceilings and won't bring a massive improvement - they are all playing so well already. If we take Nathan Jones as an example - he is improving but only marginally, and evidently, not enough to push us up the ladder. He is the benchmark for Tyson and Viney and McDonald to not rest on their laurels and continue to improve their games - I just think they are near to their peak levels right now. You speak of 'the want' in players, and I don't think we have lacked that in our players - we have lacked the talent to realise that want. I would love to see wholesale improvement in 2014 but I am not sure there are many avenues for it to come, nor much scope for dealing with injuries - we need our new players to come in seamlessly, all our best players to injury free and in-form, the bulk of the list to regain lost confidnce, and for our kids to come on quickly. It is a cocktail that rarely happens.2 points

Tyson - 21 years old, 35 games. An absolute gun who we are yet to see the best off.Viney - 20 years old, 33 games. Reminds of Jones in early days, no need to barge your way through every contest, McDonald - 22 years old 60 games holding down a key defensive post in a backline constantly under the pump. Jetta - 24 years old, 57 games. A breakout year at 24, an automatic selection and plans to work in his aerobic capacity during this off season. You talk about players improving from ages 21-24 then go on to say that the above mentioned are running near capacity? Nathan Jones turned 26 last year and for mine had his best season. I put this down to the coaching of Roos/Stone, having the likes of Vince, Cross and Tyson helping out but mainly he now starts to think his way through situation rather than barge his way through. Dunn is another senior player that took his game to a new level. I think Michie has the goods, has shown some glimpses, if he remains injury free this shapes up as a crucial year for him. As you've mentioned once their body fills out their confidence increases, good coaching/development helps, natural ability is another one, for as hard as Jordie try's he lacks class but the main one for me is "the want". The want to succeed, the want to be the best, the want to put your body on the line when it's your turn. Watts is a perfect example of someone who has endless improvement in front of him but doesn't "want it" enough. He holds his spot for now because of his elite disposal and awareness but in the next year or two could find himself overtaken by players with a skill set on par with his but they also pocess "the want".2 points

We'll get more members when we start winning more games. There is no place like Demonland after a win, we just don't win very often. I think the mods do a good job, although I'd like to see Demonland even less regulated.2 points

Our off-field administration is located at no cost to us courtesy of the MCC in the former VFL offices (Southern Stand) . The cost of replicating this elsewhere would be horrific . Apparently Melbourne Rebels are lobbying to take our spot at AAMI . I reckon there is a fair chance they wont be financially viable for much longer . Gosch's is just fine for us.2 points

I think a lot of the people who just look in, then move on, would be checking for any interesting fragments of information and training reports. But seriously, with the snarky, surly, personal tone that so many threads here degenerate into, it's not exactly a surprise that people think "Nah, I'm not going to get into that." I'd endorse a 'mod rule' that authorised a simple blanking/deleting of any comment that includes sniping lines like "Where you even at the same game? / You clearly have no idea about football / what would you know / only an idiot would" and so on. People would be perfectly welcome to repost their point, of course. In fact, a brief period of summertime enforcement would reset the tone quickly, ready to welcome passing strangers as the season gets closer. All that said, things do improve this time of year, everyone is in a better mood after the draft!2 points

I have a mate who is/was so stressed out he had totally Lost his sense of humour & his mental health was on the edge. now as things slow down in dairy farming re the calving etc, he has now found a new lady & his life & is getting back to so/so normal. he has a life back again. he is getting his sense of fun & humor back, & is now less inclined to lose the plot with the cattle etc. all the negative perspective (serious dose of murphy's law) is evaporating & new shoots of sparkle & fun are growing. IMO we all have to allow this transition to happen within this place (the mfc supporters) to have a sense of humor, to have some fun, to where a smile (here), & to Lose some of the intensity & seriousness that is seen in these pages all too often... usually as demeaning attacks on others. its time we all started to lighten up, regards our footy club, & let it become a club once again.1 point

Of course no one will volunteer to help you Jizza. Who would listen to a rich cocky saying how poor he is? Free food, beer and a decent shiraz might catch a few. Free illegal substances would get Biffen. If you line up a couple of bluerinsers, dc might check them out. And ..... if want Moonie promise to tell him he's your friend (or something like that). He's a sad and pathetic fellow. You could get Earl Hood (he's familiar with shite) but you must call him Sir. OD might front but I'm not certain he'd handle all those udders. Tell Redleg he can watch redtube without interruption. An WJ would probably race down if you promised to leave Demonland. Now there's the secret - promise to pizz off and they'd come from everywhere.1 point

And when that happens, to have people complaining about the top free agent joining the reigning premiers.1 point

Tim, I am overseas til May and have been the last few years and have found the AFL overseas subscription very good, can watch all games including preseason live and replays. It's about 150 for the whole season and if he has decent internet coverage and a laptop or ipad can watch any game he likes and I'm sure there's a way he can watch it on a big screen TV too. It's well worth it and simpler than what you've pointed out but I may have misinterpret he situation.1 point

To be honest it doesn't always bother me and sometimes I find it amusing, however other times it can be frustrating when I'm trying to read about footy and theres all these off topic posts. I end up just skimming over them anyway however the OP was asking how we could attract more members to the forum and I was providing an example of what might turn people off engaging. It is nowhere near as bad as the sniping and belittling that goes on here though. Sorry if I offended but again was offering an opinion on what might deter some from participating in the forum.1 point

So it was the dingo that ordered all those injections: http://thenewdaily.com.au/sport/2014/10/20/james-hird-new-lindy-chamberlain/?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=The+New+Daily+Friday+2115+Aus+Super&utm_content=The+New+Daily+Friday+2115+Aus+Super+CID_df38acb1ab6b2af2342cbb9e1fe4d438&utm_source=&utm_term=Why%20James%20Hird%20is%20the%20new%20Lindy%20Chamberlain1 point

No doubt Rhino loved to cross the line which upset people, but he also gave this site a lot of his time - more than most others have. Our jobs got harder when he went and I personally have a lot of respect for him.1 point

DC oh how bad news travels fast! Yes I was refused entry to the Governor's Christmas tea party over a purely administrative oversight I believe, my name was not on their guest list. And yes some time later I was detained by security staff trying to mount the back fence to Government House from the Botanical Gardens to gain entry. Yes there was an unfortunate scene caught by ACA cameras that I now regret but my people are dealing with it and I have refused all requests for interviews with Tracy Grimshaw. Let me assure you DC that I am following up these issues with Westminster pronto!1 point

They're idiots and deserve everything they get after re-signing him following his 12 month suspension. All I can say is they better not go crying poor to the AFL after this is all said and done.1 point

Matt Jones has only missed 2 possible games since he joined Melbourne, see the latest article on the website. He is obviously a coaches favourite and will play if fit.1 point

Does no one remember Toumpas reportedly doing a similar thing..? Not sure if there's a point here or not, or rather the point is subjective depending on your perception of Toumpas in particular.1 point

Reading this thread, it makes one realise how much our list has improved since 2012. I look at our best 25 or so now, and no longer get anxious/completely depressed. It's actually alright now.1 point

That would be it. I have a paid a lot more and enjoyed the meal a lot less. Heading to Tas in March again with the cheese and just might get over to Strahan again, love the place. Might even cast a lure.1 point

As the old joke goes Paul Roos asks Santa for a unicorn. Santa says 'don't be silly, you need to be realistic'. So Paul says 'Well I'm coach of the Melbourne Football Club and I'd really just like an injury free Jesse Hogan, for Jack Watts to reach his potential and for consistency at the AFL tribunal". And Santa says 'What colour unicorn do you want?'1 point

Round 1 going early Jetta frost Garland Lumumba McDonald Dunn Watts Viney Vince Kent Hogan Petracca Howe Gawn Garlett Jamar N.Jones Tyson Cross Salem Grimes Sub: JKH Emg grimes toumpass brayshaw Next in line: Dawes michie Pederson Omac White I may be in dreamland, but I think this team could be competitive..... It has the talks covered in our back half, ball winning mids, pace and quality disposal on the wings and a fwd line that could function1 point

No one win be a walk up starter from the kindergarten any more. If they earn the right to play, then thats great but I think Roos is against all the hype of expectation and would rather ease players into their roles. we'll just have to wait and see who is actually ready to play. Im more than fine by that.I can certainly see some youngens getting a little NAB time, just to see how they fair at this level but then it might well be now go back and work on this and that of your game etc1 point
-
Your team would have too many kids. Kent should be showing what he is capable of on a consistent basis and Cross and Bail had the trust of Roos last year and played their roles. Brayshaw and Salem won't be able to fulfil the roles of Cross and Bail so quickly. Why can't these kids earn their game? You know, like a real club...1 point

Ali in his early years was great ... when he returned after 4 years out of it, he was brave and smart. He went on too long but a lot do. I don't blame him for not wanting to quit. These type of athletes often have no concept of quitting. Tyson would only need to land one punch - he had lightning speed with that knockout blow. Ali remains one of my few idols and I didn't particularly like Tyson at all so it's a tough one. Ali defeated Foreman when Ali was 32 and Foreman was 25. George was a fearsome puncher and like Tyson, often only needed to land one knockout punch. Up until the "Rumble in the Jungle", Foreman had won all 40 of his fights with 37 being by knockout. In 15 of his previous 17 fights, his opponents were knocked out within 2 rounds. He had a reputation that was somewhat similar to Iron Mike's reputation. But Muhammad was too clever for George and I'm betting Ali would have worked out a way to extend the fight against Tyson as well - so it's "The Greatest" - just. But I am a fair bit biased! Here is a 5 minute highlights package of "The Rumble in the Jungle" A win against the odds and a great sporting moment.1 point

I;d like to think Clay would knock tysons' head off that thick neck of his. Clay (Ali) lost the best part of his boxing yrs when he refused to be drafted for national service. Tyson was just a brute, Ali might have had the rings smarts to take him out. (on points)1 point

Yep, same way I felt when some corpoate bastards swayed the vote to merge with hawthorn to create "deeks" or 'dawks"... We owe our life to the the guys at Hawthorn who refused the merge... Joe Gutnick stepped in to save us then,,, Time for us remaining members to weather the storm on our own this time, I guess,,,1 point
