I wandered passed at close to 11, they'd obviously been going at it for a while by then. Unsighted: Trengove, Spencer, Terlich, Dawes Lumumba had done some light running that I saw. Dunny was out there pounding away some interval training with a trainer. He looks very strong. Jamar doing some one on one work with Stafford. Pretty relaxed stuff really. Vince and Gawn had been doing running together, laps and then over to the Paddock before they joined in with Jamar. Vince kicking it up, Jamar, Gawn and then Watts practicing pushing off from Miller and then breaking to the drop of the ball and marking. It was relaxed stuff for these guys by then. Speaking of Watts. He was doing some grueling running with one of the staff. Plenty of laps and also short burst repeat sprints. I'm not sure who's idea it is - either Watts' or the staffs. But I think the penny has dropped a bit and it's Watts' time to really cop some hard work. No more excuses not to have AFL midfielder level fitness and to put in the repeat efforts in games. Main group drills: End to end kicking - focus on moving the ball quickly. Decent footskills for most and nice marking. (McKenzie floating it short, Fitzy dropping a simple mark with the ball bouncing off his hands, usual stuff). JKH, Salem and Billy Stretch all looking sharp in this drill. Billy is a decent size, not overly tall, not heavy but he's got some muscles. At the whistle the guys would run as a group up and down the centre line before starting in the next position. A good way to get repeat sprints in. At one stage Roos wasn't happy and ordered a 400 (or it was preordered from Misson). Maxy King was last in one of the groups. But I tell you what he's a beautiful kick. If we get him up to scratch physically I'd say he'd be one of the best kicks for a ruckman in the entire league. 5 v 3 handball. 5 guys get the ball, work it passed 3 defenders until they get it to the other end. 3 of the 5 attackers become the defenders the other way. A nice way to work on forward pressure and repeat efforts. As mentioned Goodwin had a group of smalls - Garlett, JKH, Stretch, Bail and a couple of others and was practicing using a fend to break tackles. His focus is on the little things when he takes these groups. They then split roughly in half (of those that were left). Saty obviously followed the half over to the tan. I caught up with them later when I did my own lap of the tan. It's fair to say they went up the hill a bit quicker than I did! Repeat 300's followed by sprints were the order for the group still at Gosch's. They went out in pairs with Kent being the most impressive. He went out in the 2nd pair (possibly Bail and Tyson in pair 1 but I'm not entire sure) and he was burning Hogan off the mark, catching close to the group behind and holding his margin. Working really hard and looking fit. JKH and Stretch were in group 3 and both were running well. Garlett and Garland were together. They didn't make an impression on those in front. To be honest I was a bit disappointed. I don't know where Colin Garland is at, maybe still building fitness from last year? Newton and Riley were in the last group. Both were struggling. They did some different work where they would lead out and Tom McDonald would follow in behind. He caught them pretty early in the 200-300m runs they did. I think it's fair to say if both want to be AFL midfielders they need to lift. Riley put a gap ahead of Newton though. It's his first week but we might be seeing why Port weren't too disappointed in letting Newton go. Hopefully it's just adapting to our trainings. Now the important things. Crowd watch: Solid crowd. Nice to see a couple of cops working hard stopping by and having a look Toilet watch: Still no toilets. Players taken to the cycling method of relieving themselves, the out the bottom of the bike shorts. Jack Grimes up against the bin. In full view of the cops as well. No fines for public urination. I know we aren't flush with funds (excuse the pun) but I'm still surprised we can't organise a public toilet.14 points

Another good day at training News: Tapscott has a back injury so it looks like game over for him HL had a bit of work done during the session, I asked him as he left the session early, just his body getting back into it Big Maxy did a bit of ruck work, marking and kicking, so he is on his way back again Pics will be up on my Twitter Demonpk Simon Goodwin took a session of stoppage work with a group, nice bit of Jeff Garlett and JKH having a bit of a tussle, smiles all around Squad split at the end of session and a group went to pound up Anderson's Hill, went to watch and take pics, the players that surprised me Viney, Grimes and Toumpas,9 points

We should draft him. He's got heap of talent and an AFL environment would really help him get his life back on track. Besides, I'm so sick of Melbourne drafting choir boys.7 points

Over the 60+ years of my life, I have been, and still am a di ck head. You name the the stupidity and I can top it. I try not to judge today's young people because I was (am) as silly as them. However, even if the technology was available. I dont think i would have been such a giant fu ck wit to actually film myself breaking the law and then publishing it for the world to see.7 points

Got to feel for Tapscott. Who knows if he'd have made it, but the injuries surely haven't helped. It would be very frustrating watching your career slip away and your body won't let you do anything about it.6 points

I just love the idea of two powerhouse forwards straightening up our side. We have suffered with crap football for about 8 years and it is time we had something to look forward to.6 points

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Garlett from the remote, small, distant community of Perth?6 points

OK here it is, only a few minutes worth but very good quality if you can ignore the time coding. Hassa's goal is about a minute and a half in.5 points

There is a major difference between not tolerating what Gartlett has done as opposed to being intolerant. That he is foolish and irresponsible is undeniable. That he could have killed others is unacceptable. However I for one prefer to try and understand what drives individuals to such behavior rather than washing my hands of "wastes of oxygen". Again, I do not condone in any way, shape or form his behavior and I also realise that my desire to understand these problems in the hope of reducing them is a pipe dream but I think I prefer my delusional pipe dream as opposed to a harsh wiping my hands of troubled souls. I prefer the "recognising that it is too simple and grossly unfair to make cultural assumptions about a person because they're aboriginal" brigade myself. Arrow compared Garlett to Jurrah, ffs. If it's "PC" to recognise that the situations don't even come close to being related, then fine, I'm PC as, bro.5 points

A bit sad really but if we get McCartin I would say our 2 best KPF's haven't played a game at AFL level yet.4 points

Does this answer any questions people had between the differences between the Primary List and the Rookie List? And the fact that some players would baulk at the decision to be demoted? I am not saying it was an incorrect decision, in fact his retirement affirms the decision, but there were some on here that felt contracted players would walk willingly and magnanimously onto the Rookie List.4 points

An element to all of this I find, well, quite hilarious, is the lengths the players are going to to hide their identities in all of this. I mean there are millions of current Essendon players so no one will figure it out when, 1) said players disappear off the grid and just coincidentally arent out there playing footy and 2) have their names plastered all over the ASADA Register of Findings as having incurred penalties (sanctions) As with so much of this it seems very little was thought through with any logic.I'm not sure if I'm in the minority or otherwise and I really couldn't care less but I have very little sympathy, if any, for the players concerned. Whilst they are obviously counted amongst the less sharp of a tool shed ( they have to be ) and maybe they weren't fully across what was happening ( but its beholding upon them to be so ) they have had ample opportunity to revisit all of this and come to a more reasoned standpoint and understanding that they have participated in a program that sought unfair advantage otherwise known as cheating. They need to own this. Not saying they'd be proud to do so but we all stuff up, wittingly and otherwise and its how you deal with that that shapes character. They keep wanting to tilt at the windmill, to deny what has obviously happened , to hope for a technicality to release them free them from this need to be accountable. They pray for the get out of jail card. None of this speaks to remorse or ownership of their folly. One off events might attract some leniency but this was systemic. This was a concerted effort to rort the fairness of the game, this is a serial offence. I thoroughly hope that the Tribunal takes this into account. This is not not a can of drink inadvertently consumed it was a deceit that the players must have invested of themselves. Quite frankly all concerned should just be banned, and Im not talking for a year. To this end the AFLPA should be behind ASADA as this would indicate to their association's members that they are pro doing the right thing and if you do you will be backed. Currently this amateur bunch of nuff nuffs are sending all the wrong signals. Whilst they could provide access to advise and even representation its the stance that's all wrong. Seems the AFLPA are just as morally bankrupt as many of the AFL itself. My sympathies go to the thousands of sporting people who do the right thing and take pains to ensure they are even when dodgy advice seems to work against them. EFC entered into a Faustian deal and they can pay up.The AFL might want to tread ever so carefully as I think its totally misreading the standpoint of much of the game's public. If they dont bring in the correct and just finding then just watch the grassroots support fade away, Watch as mums and dads question whether they want little Jonny or Abi to participate in Auskick, watch as a 'decent' percentage of a probably somewhat older audience move to distance themselves from the now corrupt game. If theres even a sniff of the idea that its now about he who cheats best wins then thousands will abandon the game at this level. I think the AFL might indeed lean more towards the right outcome but im not convinced it will be for the right reasons.4 points

Maybe for you but not for me. I'd say his heart wasn't in it because if it was he'd have taken the rookie spot as the majority of others have in the past. Evans would have known he was a marginal play on the list. He would have known that no other club had any interest in him. He would have seen himself behind a bevy of younger and better players and from last year he would have known that he struggled to play Roos' game plan. I reckon there was a good chance he was going to coast through the year and concentrate on his studies anyway - only playing for the money. When the rookie list option was put to him he just thought "you ripper, full pay to study for the year". Good outcome for both parties.3 points

This is the last line in that story "It has also used pick No. 42 on father-son selection Billy Stretch, a similar type of player to Barry." Gee I hope he is way better than Barry.3 points

Not denying Gartlett is a foolish young man, nor that he might put his and other's lives at risk. And it's offensive to insinuate that I don't care about people who have been innocently affected by drivers under the influence. Gartlett's life is worth rehabilitating rather than just another life (or lives) lost on the roads or as a result of drugs. That's why we should care. And for the record I called your comment stupid, not you.3 points

If there was one thing I could change it'd be this. The creeping on off betting adds everywhere ruins the atmosphere for me, including when I watch on TV and listen on the radio. I've had a gutfull. I hate it. If people want to bet, they have apps (as the adds keep reminding me). edit: spelling3 points

I have thought about why I don't like the dome of death and leaving aside the numerous problems we have all endured I think it comes down to two things for me. I am confident that I don't like playing football inside, there is just something about it that I struggle with. The other is we seldom get less than a belting when we play there. I am very confident if we won 90% of our games there I would miraculously grow to love the place.3 points

Viney is genetic, you have to remember the size of his Dad, they are strictly controlling what he does though, apart from the size, he did heaps of work over the break on his running, as I said looks like he is primed for a big year. As for Watts, during the session he is doing laps with Andew Nicol, who for his size is a running machine, Watts' is looking really good at the sessions progress, Nichol had him hunched over once today, thought he was going to produce breakfast, but took a quick break and did another gut buster.....obviously Roos has laid down he needs to build his tank2 points

You obviously thought anybody could do a countdown. I have been trained for years in the study of countdown and am in fact a black belt, grand master, in the old art of countdown. I propose a countdown to Wong's on the 2nd of December, after the ND. Obviously I will do it, as no one else on here as the necessary skill and qualifications for such a difficult task.2 points

Just hang on till I get my PC uniform on, junior. The corset takes a while. Drug abuse certainly is a big problem amongst Aboriginal kids, rural, remote and urban. IMO Garlett's behaviour suggests an urge to destroy himself - he wouldn't be the first to commit vehicular suicide, and suicide is well understood to be a major cause of death amongst young Aborigines. It will be terrible if he takes someone with him, I'm sure that's not his intention, but concern about his possible victims from posters who transparently don't give much of a stuff about other people generally, strikes me as ironic (euphemism).2 points

For me sport, professional sport is about winning within the rules. I accept that to win, rules will be pushed to the limits. I understand grey areas. I hope my team (our team) pushes all the limits within the rules. There is no way that the EFC stayed within the rules. They have broken multiple rules from good governance to workplace health and safety to accurate record keeping to administering unapproved and potentially harmful substances to young men in their care. For these reasons the club must be punished and severely punished at that. As Beeb stated earlier the players are responsible for their part in this appalling blight on our game, and a very real punishment must be meted out to them as well. The AFLPA have not done enough, and should be calling for penalties against the EFC . Workcare should do its job, and that will mean severe punishment for the EFC and its directors. The AMA should examine the role of Doc Reid and deal with him. Hird should be banished from the game with his name removed from the records, if ever anyone in this saga deserves to be persona non grata it is James Hird. Then & only then can the AFL and the competition move on cleansed, cleansed but tarnished. I will continue to expect teams to push boundaries, but to never break them.2 points

Before the "ice" scourge there was the "heroin" scourge and before that was the "lsd" with a few other drugs inbetween Even before that was the underage drinking which we all did in our youth and smoking the horrid "Weed" I don't have the answer to the problem but it has been going on since time began Youth will always experiment with new things be that drugs or other very dangerous practises. Some will come through this and others will fall by the wayside. The one thing I know is that a whole lot of these temptations are due to peer group pressure. I think of all the drugs that are around today...Ice is the most dangerous that I have seen. Edit....This is not a race issue....It is a world wide problem It is not a western only problem.....Drugs have been used by Eastern countries and tribes of Sth American for centuaries2 points

Came here to read about the boys at training but instead read a couple of pages of elderly folk talking about their first cars. Well I feel a bit left out so what the heck.. 92 Mitsubishi Magna was my first ride. Ah it was a gem.. The real selling point was that it was converted to gas but I later found out that it was not converted properly which meant my precious first car was an absolute lemon. The very first day I got it I managed to run it straight into the back of my mates car who slammed on the brakes to stop for a rabbit. A god damned rabbit. Ah the good old days..2 points

I've just watched the highlights. Makes me realize how difficult it would be being a recruiter. McCartin mauling kids much smaller than him and looks terrific. You'd never get to see the kid play on big bodies and that's who he'll get in his career. Players like Fergus Watts come to mind, Nic Smith, Hanson, Thorp, Dowler and Robbie Tarrant never turned into what they were supposed to be. Then there's Roughy, Franklin, Henderson and Kennedy who probably did. How on earth would you know? Roos is spot on, picking talls is a mugs game and big bodied ones like McCartin doubly so. I'll watch his career with great interest, more so if we select him.2 points
