As previously mentioned it was the aim of the MFC to trade for 2 A Grade Mids and also leave one top ten draft pick. (My apologies for suggesting pick 2 would stay, I later corrected this.) There were a number of A Grade players targeted but Dangerfield, Hannebery plus a couple of other A Grade Swans were the players MFC gained traction. Mitchell was also targeted as a Tyson style deal. Melbourne were prepared to trade virtually any player on the list for the right price to also help bring these trades to completion. MFC came very close to securing Danger, Danger had agreed to be traded to us on a massive contract but never asked to leave. Roos was never going to trade picks 2 and 3 for one player which was what Adelaide were asking. When the Adelaide administration were unable to get Danger to commit to a new contract last week, Pick 3 and a later first round pick became the asking price. The tigers had shown interest in Trengrove for pick 12. This deal was on the clasp of being done but unfortunately Trengrove failed his medico. MFC then went to look for a replacement and shopped Watts around. Several good teams were prepared to trade their first round pick 10 -20 for Watts, however Roos put an end to this. Roos values Watts much higher than a pick 10 - 20 but no teams were prepared to offer more. Roos wants to keep Watts. Other players were also suggested but no deal was done. On a side note I don't believe the rumour that Adelaide were prepared to offer pick 10 for Trengrove. Attention then moved back to Sydney, it was hoped that Sydney would have salary cap issues this would force them to off load one of their A Graders for pick 2. MFC were also hoping to trade out another player for a pick around 10 which they would have hoped to get Lever. Another option was to trade for Mitchell with pick 2 swapped for a later single digit pick that would have been used for Lever. Clearly no deal was done. It was difficult to get the targeted Swans players to agree to come to the Dees and Sydney are not yet in a position of being forced to reduce salary cap. This will be an issue for them next year, when they will be forced to let players go....... but they want to win the premiership first. We also made a play for Toby Greene. Roos is targeting Lever and Brayshaw in the draft. Brayshaw is a lock in, it will be interesting who Roos takes with the other low pick. MFC is now is a super strong position with massive salary cap space. It will be making big plays for FA next season and you can bet Danger and Sydney players are at the top of their list. So to the riddles...... if you care. Congratulations to Ignition who was closest to the pin, although many correctly solved the first one. "Our likely trading partner is black and white but not a little bird" Answer: Sydney. A Swan can come in black or white and is not a little bird. "Tick, tock, the black mouse has run up the electric clock. Lancelot lurks with feathers or fur to the command of his sir." The black mouse is Dangerfield, time was running out to complete this deal and Watts had been offered as part of the trade. Watts was later withdrawn. Lancelot is the "Jack of Clubs", Watts is the Jack of Clubs. Watts is Lancelot. There were several clubs interested in Watts and he would go where he was traded. Sir is Roos. Ok so they both ended up not happening, trade week is a moving beast. I am sorry to any that somehow feel offended. For god sake it was a rumour thread, lighten up!! I am sure I will cop some more abuse, please its a waste of your time, I simply don't care. The tread was boring, trade week was boring, I had been muted and thought I would add some fun. It did make me laugh.............. very hard. One more thing, Demonland deteriorates when its members start bickering. We once had a site called Demology. It was destroyed by its members bickering, lets not let Demonland go down that path.53 points

I used to think Demonland was a footy forum but now I realize it's more a comedy forum where footy is occasionally discussed - certainly it's a secondary consideration. Some time ago I started to read the Potential Trades Tread and couldn't help but to laugh (I couldn't face the Danger thread). Then when I thought people were getting a grip in that thread a bloke comes along and starts asking riddles. Pretty funny and everyone seems to enjoy it - so many users on at one time. When that riddle isn't solved a Riddler comes along and asks another and CIP chips in with another but the joke is wearing thin and while others try to copy they can't match the originality of the first. Sadly the riddle is never solved. As it happens this didn't turn out to be the most important time for the MFC since 2000 and as far as I'm aware the riddle has never been explained (perhaps the answer is somewhere deep in the Danger thread but I'm all laughed out at the moment). But the riddler is still much admired and defended by many who so like to be involved in the jokes even if they are the butt. So then this morning I start reading this thread thinking that the comedy is running a bit thin. I'm shocked. I reckon if I looked closely I could see blood on my screen. Screams, abuse, distress and anger pour out. Then a bloke gets up and says "hey, this mightn't have been so bad after all". He's told he's a fool but a few clear thinkers follow. A crack in the dam of hostility appears. Then the MFC play the cruelest joke of all. They put Sam Frosts highlight package up and a couple of photo's. It's about 3 minutes long and surprise surprise shows Slammin Sam doing ok (I've often wondered what the complementary package of "Sam's greatest mistakes" would look like and wonder if GWS will put that up). Then there is a tremor, the dam starts to look seriously shaky and water is flowing faster now. All of a sudden the crack becomes a gash the water flows faster and faster, the clouds clear and all is good with the world. What was the inept sacrifice of pick 23 now becomes a master stroke of professional list management. From being screwed we've identified our man, courted him with professionalism and been decisive in our actions. Rather than buckling in the wake of Saints bluff we've acted decisively and done what it takes. We've backed ourselves in. Well done MFC!! This kid has gone from not being worth anything but a very late round pick (after all an aging second string ruckman from the same club was traded for a much later pick) to someone who will be better than an All Australian key position backman sort by most of the top clubs and who's new contract was deemed to be worth the top level compensation. What a win! Frost > All Australian dud. Sam welcome to the madhouse that is the MFC. You'll have a lovely honeymoon until your first game. Even then you'll be cut a little slack but in time, like poor old Tommy McDonald, you'll be vilified and posters in threads will start questioning your credentials and condemning you to the dustbin of failed MFC trades and draft picks. But just remember, underneath it all there will be Saty continuing to support you and the silent minority appreciating your efforts and understanding that you are a 21 year old key position defender playing on the oppositions best forwards and learning your trade. Good luck mate. Oh, and if you want a laugh just read this thread!!11 points

I'd be looking at Brendan McCarthy as a replacement. Great development coach. Goodwin will be the midfield coach I think.10 points

BB, the thing I've slowly come to terms with over the many years we've been doing this forum thing, is that Demonland is obviously a microcosm of society. So many people like to see things in black and white. People like their history to be neat and simple. And people can change their seemingly very passionate and emotive views really really quickly. On Demonland we often talk about 'group think'. Well it's real. We've actually constructed our own version of MFC history (particularly the last two decades). And their is no place in that history for grey. Bailey was too soft. Neeld was too harsh. Roos is a God and Jimmy is immortal. Those seen as failures have no redeeming features. Those viewed positively are worshiped and beyond question. The posters on this site that I value are the ones who look for the grey and challenge accepted Demonland thinking.6 points

I'm very excited about next year. This year played out pretty much as I expected, which was a great effort, considering the loss of Mitch Clark and Jesse Hogan for the year. They were HUGE holes in this year, and too many forget that. We were much more competitive, defensively accountable, and as a consequence, in winning positions much more, where we were NOWHERE near it the previous year. The group predictably tired toward the end, and had too many passengers (e.g. Chip Frawley) but I enjoyed watching the team in 2014. The pick-ups we've got so far are excellent. Speed and x-factor in Lumumba and Garlett. I don't think many on here understand how significant a fit, happy Jeff Garlett can be. He is an elite small forward. Lumumba is also an elite of the AFL, whether you like him or not. And he will have an enormous effect on 'straightening us up' out of the backline. Frost is 21 years old. At his height and size, he's got enormous upside. He's a great mate of Dom Tyson, and coming home to his family. He reminds me of David Neitz in his attributes. Billy Stretch, whilst young, has well reported professionalism and diligence. And he's got skills. I don't have a single doubt that picks 2 and 3 will be used for talent and exactly that kind of diligent culture, something we've stuffed up in the past. Not now. I also have confidence that Michie, Riley, Salem, JKH and Viney are going to have big percentage improvements. Then there's Jesse Hogan. If he plays 18 or so games on top of a full pre-season, all the signs point to a game changing contribution to this team. Gear up people, Roos, Goodwin et al are building a club and a team we can be proud of, and that has pride in themselves as a 'team'. Don't discount that last bit, cos it alone will put lesser teamwork to the sword next year, and scare some of the 'big boys' of the AFL along the way. GO YOU MIGHTY DEES!!!!!6 points

Funny thread. At the end of 2012 Port Adelaide wouldve been having the same thread with arguably the same results. A traded player showing so much (Ebert), backing up their only good player (Boak) and a bunch of young and mature age players who mostly have shown nothing. A disappointing young player with a high pick (Wingard) and a another high pick. They'd turn that into Wines, Wingard would go bang and their bit players developed over that preseason. It's a natural progression of a young list. We could finish last, we could finish 8th. Tyson comes on, Jones reaches a new level. A mix of Gawn and Spencer can reach Lobbe levels. Lumumba plays as our Broadbent and McDonald and Frost are our Carlisle and Trengove. Viney needs to burst a game open like Wines, and we need the class of a Hartlett but we're not THAT far away. We have two picks in this draft and Ollie Wines showed one pick can change so much. There's no point crying over the one that got away, but look forward in the hope that these two young kids we bring in may change our fortunes immediately! Go Dees6 points

Posters such as Chook, Ryan Dee, Party Boy GNF etc who post stuff they have heard, I have not problem with at all. They are only posting info they have heard from their sources. Also not sure that Roos does not rate Patrrica, I think there is an expectation he will go 1. I don't expect Roos to go for Lever over maccatrin. But I don't know this. All I know is that Roos rates Lever, perhaps not as high as 3. Time will tell. Personally I would go for maccatrin assuming Patrrica is gone. Brayshaw a lock in.5 points

Base a decision purely on merit. Using the the write-ups, Tyler would be a 'project' player (probably a rookie) and not likely to be pressing for senior selection until well into Roosy's final year as senior coach. In any event, I wouldn't be the least bit concerned by having the pair at Melbourne. I recall quite a few around here having concerns about the Vineys' but there doesn't seem to be any downside to that, and going back to a different era, it worked outstandingly well for Norm and Barass. And just an afterthought, having Tyler on our list might even prolong Roosy's involvement in our Club in some capacity. That wouldn't be a bad thing.5 points

MY MAIL: Just spoke to my connection down at the Falcons. He said that if Petracca goes pick 1, we must take Mcartin. Said the kid is an absolute brute, who plays aggressively and can mark, kick, tackle, out body and the rest. Makes me think of what could be with a combination of Hogan and Mcartin down there for the next 10 years. Also said he is a monster that would be ready to go round 1. Said he played bottom age last year, and made the All-Australian side, and also actually broke Dom Sheeds collar bone in one of the matches. Downside is that he has diabetes, and has sometimes had to run off the field to check his levels but is making good progress in learning how to manage this. Anyways just what i got told. For me, if Petracca goes #1 like he is expected to, MCartin and Brayshaw would be my wishes.5 points

The small paper reported that Swans would have taken a late pick for Membrey thus leaving Frost available at PSD 1 for the Saints. The anguish over the use of 23 for Frost is amusing. Go back to the Hannath thread where we going to Rookie but missed out because Freo jumped in. "Geez the club is stupid - should have used an earlier pick on Hannath instead we let Freo get in before us" "Geez the club is stupid - why do we use an earlier pick to grab Frost" Damned if you, damned if you don't.5 points

Find it hard to be critical of what we've done. In terms of netting a gun from another club, there's obviously been no success there but the players I presume we'd have looked at, the Dangerfields, Shueys et cetera, have had to want to come in the first place and then their clubs aren't going to want to trade them anyway unless serious overs was paid. If there was any chance of nabbing a wantaway Treloar or Shiel, that evaporated when Boyd left for the Dogs - GWS weren't going to allow a second gun kid leave. Can't imagine Sydney would have contemplated trading Kennedy with an embargo in place, with them getting Heeney and with no need to draft forwards. One of the things that concerned me was that we were going to trade highly valuable draft picks and eat up a sizeable chunk of our cap room on the one player. I think when there is a mechanism to get players for free, giving away high draft picks meant that I didn't think we could really win from a purely list management perspective out of doing it even if we did land a big fish. I am pleased we have a good strong draft position and I think it is critical that the club each year retains a draft hand that at least correlates to its finishing position on the ladder. Eventually, the cyclical effects of the draft will help us up the ladder and realistically, getting a flock of talented kids at the club at the one time is the best chance we have of being something. Garlett and Lumumba if they aren't disruptive influences are good trades, with the club making the best of the bad Mitch Clark situation. Sam Frost trade to me is ok. If you bundled 40 and 53 together I'm sure a club at 30 would be interested, so the value of 40 and 53 is under-rated by many and the value of 23 over-rated. I'm not sure the variance between pick 23 and 40 is that high so I don't really think the downgrade is of huge detriment. Practically, at 23 there would be four or five players the club would be interested in and one or two of them will still be there at 40 and I like the fact we have an extra pick in a deeper even draft. As for actually getting Frost, he's a terrific athlete and a very good shell to work with. The issue is whether he has the nous to actually shut an opponent out of the game. It's a decent gamble and we needed a developmental key position player in a year when they are thin on the ground outside the top 15 picks in the draft. The big negative for me is that Trengove, who was a likely source of improvement probably won't get on the park...5 points

Howe is us supporters only excitement. Sometimes our only reason to go to the game. Howe has been terribly developed and I believe could be our best player. In a good team, he could be anything. If Dangerfield was keen to leave Adelaide but didn't get the megaphone out demanding a trade and nominating clubs, then he deserves a huge round of respect from everyone. I was previously ambivalent about getting Dangerfield, worried that the hype about such an elite and spectacular player would push his 'price' even beyond where it should be. But, that nod to good character and the 'new loyalty' of discretion and respect in your dealings, that's got me genuinely keen to recruit him now.4 points

In my view picks are paper money. You really dont know what you are going to get or the true value of the pick for some time. Sure they are an opportunity to back your guess before other teams but history shows that remains very speculative exercise. Roos knows this when he articulated his general approach to the draft. It appears our approach was to find the best available replacement for Frawley. Our bet is that Frost is developing as a key backman who is not yet as good as Frawley but can fill that role at senior level. If we passed because of some belief that picks are bankable currency then we have learnt very little as a club. The question is not whether he was worth pick 23 but rather does he fill the role we needed to fill this year and we will know the answer over the next season.4 points

I disagree that he can play. If you haven't got a lot going for you personality wise, you need to be a good enough player to offset that, and Robinson isn't.4 points

Yep, would be an excellent replacement. By the sounds of things McCarthy is cut from the same cloth as Stone. Cooney and Griffen undermined McCarthy - and both have since shown their true form.4 points

Yeah just saw this on the MFC website. Really disappointed to read it. Stone is a marvellous coach and has obviously had a superb career. I wish he was able to stick around longer to help our young guys develop further as he is a real asset. Congratulations to him on a brilliant career. Goodwin will most likely help fill his role you would assume, or they may look to make another hire over the off-season or next year.4 points

I have a mate who is a big GWS fan. Earlier in the year we were talking about Frawley possibly leaving and I suggested that he'd be a good fit for GWS, he said no way, they don't need Frawley because they have this kid called Frost who'll be better. Of course I thought he was raving but then I had a closer look at the kid and was impressed. Now my mate is [censored] (although happy with their trading). I'm pretty freakin happy about the trade4 points

My reasoning is this; 1. He Looks [censored] HUGE. 2. Might actually give a crap.4 points

Depends on fitness. If we remain unscathed through pre-season, and avoid major injury to the bulk of the list through the season proper, we will push for the finals. We have stability, familiarity with the coaches and game plan, and growing cultural and team standards. Lumumba, Garlett and Frost are ideal pickups, Hogan is effectively a new gun recruit, and some young'uns such as Salem, JKH, and Toumpas are going to be revelations. However, it all comes down to injuries, or lack of.4 points

Ash, many of us hate your club for all sorts of reasons. In my case for the thuggery in the 2000 GF (which wasn't even necessary for Essendon to win as they were by far the best team all year). I have zero sympathy for the admin, a little for the players, especially the younger ones. Surprisingly the people I have the most sympathy for are you supporters (no matter how much any rabid behaviour by them has ever annoyed me). It must be gut wrenching to see your club (over who you have little control) drag itself through the mire like this. I shudder to think what some of the depressives on this board would be like if it was us. Edit to add: forgot Hird, is there such a thing as a negative sympathy?4 points

Without going into the trade, what I do like is he meets the important criteria for deep key defenders of pace off the mark and athleticism. Despite all our drafting woes over the years, one thing we have done fairly well is recruit key defenders. Frawley was an early pick but a great pick, while McDonald and Garland were excellent late selections. When I think about these players the common denominator is pace and athleticism - Frawley and McDonald are exceptionally quick and agile for their size, while Garland also has some pace but has those long arms that allow him to get a fist in. They can all be a bit wonky with the footy in hand and with their decision making, but defensively it's really their athletic attributes that make them strong in this area. Frost has elements of McDonald - raw, but the necessary athletic attributes. Let's hope he can develop as well as McDonald has.3 points

This thread borders on nonsense. Youll get all the MFCSS brigade no doubt foaming all over themselves with negativity. We havent finished assembling our list. We dont know yet who's 'training the house down' as they say. We dont know how some will come back from the Doc's house sts. We don't know how they'll gel. They could be anything. Sometimes groups/teams just click. Who honestly knows but to start off now with the idea that all is doom and gloom I honestly question why some bother. its not a case of unrealistic expectiatons its a case of not giving in to unrealistic defeat. We had some promise this year. yet some think we'll be dead in the water despite some bettering of the list. I dont get some of you lot.3 points

I like it. Lumumba and Garlett are walk-ins to the starting 22. They both have pace and play an entertaining brand of footy, certainly got them for a lot less than what they're worth because of off-field stuff. Big win. Getting Stretch with a 3rd rounder was a lot better than I was expecting and it won't put any unnecessary external pressure on him to develop. Pick 3 for Frawley is best case scenario for sure, especially considering how ordinary he looked this season. There's a lot of talk about the 'big 4' in this year's draft and the gap between them and the rest. It can't be overstated how good it is to get another pick in the top 3. As for Frost I see a lot of similarities to McDonald and we probably would've liked to get him cheaper than pick 23 but that's what it took and I'm happy to have him officially on the list to avoid the impending uncertainty (Hannath rings a bell). The list looks considerably stronger for what has transpired in the past fortnight.3 points
