I went to the game today and it was easily the highest standard VFL game I seen in a long while. Really good skills, both sides with some serious marking power, genuine pace all over the ground and some serious body contact. I love local footy and this was a gem. Port are serious big bodies and very strong over the ball but I was impressed with the coaching by Scorpions' line coaches and main coach Brett Lovett. Fitzpatrick. What a great game. His ruckwork was really good as was his run around the ground. Has serious pace and his skills looked sharper (at last). Green. Wow. Marking and kicking was highest class. The Casey boys' nickname for him is "fossil" that was pretty funny. Davey. Boy, did he show his class and pace at times. Not a 10/10 game but showed genuine courage on a few occasions. Morton. Did some good things but should not have been listed in the best. Couch. It is time for him to move up. A great game of team football that demonstrates skill, endeavour and footy smarts. He was also one of the few Casey players able to match the Port boys for body size and strength over the ball. Cook. I watched him closely today and was super impressed. His leading up through the 50 metre arc and then turning to deliver inside 50 was excellent. Also, if one lead was ignored he was leading 2 or 3 times. And importantly he led into the right spaces at the right time. And his defensive running to cover for team mates out of position was good. No goals but a seriously good team game. He took 6 lead up marks through half forward and each time delivered well. Jetta. Looked like he is still a few runs short of AFL fitness but he looked good when he had the ball. Williams. At times looked exciting but it seemed Port were very consious of him and were paying him special attention. Strauss. To be fair, both teams had a bit of difficulty holding the ball inside 50 so neither defences could rack up possessions. He was just OK today. Gysberts. He is so unassuming that it is difficult to see him getting possessions but the run-and-carry players were constantly thanking him nad patting him on the back so he was obviously doing some good work in and under. He releases the ball from a stoppage really well and considering how bad the Dees are 2nd movement away from a stoppage he is must for next week. Gysberts, Davey, Green, Couch and Cook did enough to be considered for next week. Fitzpatrick also but I reckon that Spencer has his foot in the door at the moment. You should have heard the crowd once the siren went. It was fantastic to see how much they valued beating Port. By the way, if you reckon Richmond and Saints supporters are feral, go to the next Casey v Port game and watch the Port crowd. Most had more eyes than teeth and the collective IQ of a sandwich. Wild but very entertaining.5 points

If MFC give up #4 for Boak I would be extremely disappointed!!! #12 maximum & a player if need be.4 points

Yes Robbo it is good to see him playing a better game on Saturday. But this is classic Sylvia a couple of good games and 6 shockers. I will be impressed when he is in the top 5 for the next 8 weeks. Until then it is just classic Col4 points

Agree that he is being judged extremely unfairly by some this year. It seems there is no understanding of the seriousness of his injury, and the impact that has on fitness, physical ability and confidence. Colin is starting to become a super player and I will back him all the way. Massive fan here.3 points

Jake got eight possessions and made two tackles playing as a number 2 ruckman, in his 10th AFL game. Jamar averages 9.2 disposals and 1.7 tackles (and has kicked the measly 1 goal) in 12 games this year playing as a number 1 ruckman. Jake will probably never be a gun AFL ruckman, but we certainly lost nothing on Saturday by having him in the team ahead of Jamar.3 points

Was at the game again yesterday, but haven't had a chance to post until now. Gee Casey has given us some classics this season! My take on the Melbourne players was:- Jordan Gysberts: I was actually suprised with how much of the ball he got which suggests he was getting a lot of it in close which is a good thing. I noticed him more in the second half and he really is a smooth mover. Could have kicked a nice goal at the end but missed. Reckon he'd be a good show to come in next week. Cale Morton: He was alright. No usual shocking Morton turnovers, although he did drop a simple mark on out HF line in the 2nd term as we were moving forward which resulted in the ball running out of bounds. He seemed to mainly be playing off half back I thought. A good solid game. Ricky Petterd: I was suprised Bobby wasn't in our best today. Started the game really well and could have had 3 first quarter goals if not for inaccuracy. Unsighted in the 2nd term but he went into the midfield in the 2nd half and had a few vital clearances. I'm starting to wonder if he's really a midfielder? He hasn't done his chances of a recall any harm on yesterday's game IMO. Brad Green: Vintage Green yesterday. Couldn't miss, was great in the air and his leadership and direction was vital. He's a shoe in. Possibly as a small FF next week. James Strauss: Was ok but I didn't notice him much. On a good note I think he was on Chris Cain (2nd VFL leading goal kicker) and kept him pretty quiet, only kicked one. Still a few weeks away IMO, but will be better for the run. Lucas Cook: Quiet first half but along with Green and Petterd I thought he was one of the major reasons for Casey's 2nd half fight back. Didn't take any strong pack marks, but lead up really well and presented strongly and helped Casey break through Port's zone which they seemed to have locked Casey with in the first half. No goals but an important game and he used the ball well when putting it inside F50. Aaron Davey: One of Casey's better players in the first half but didn't seem to get as much of it in the second half as John Baird started following him around everywhere. As you expect from Flash, he used it really well and his tackling and pressure was very good which is a positive. Neville Jetta: One of the players in the first half for Casey IMO and if it weren't for him they would have been down by a lot more then 34 points. Ran hard, used the ball well and was good in congestion. He's a good small defender in the making. I reckon maybe another run or two and he'll be right for a recall. Troy Davis: Struggled a bit today with Galea kicking seven on him. Having said that he did a few nice things; took some good marks and made some vital spoils late in the game. Seemed just a fraction slow for Galea which I found odd as Davis's pace is normally one of his better aspects. Tom Couch: Has to paly after today's game. Plenty of the ball, good at the stoppages and very dangerous when driffting forward booting 4 goals. Time for a swap with Magner. Jack Fitzpatrick: One of the best games I've seen him play and it was as the No 1 ruck when he's suppose to be a better forward. His agility and pace were too much for Wayde Skipper and Sam Pleming and being named BOG was more then fair enough. Could have kicked 2 or 3 but his awkward kicking style let him down. Could be a dark horse to come in as a stay at home forward, but with Jamar coming in that's most likely doubtful. Leigh Williams: Only kicked 1 but the defensive side of his game for a deep forward was first class. In the second half he made two vital smothers when Port were trying to clear the ball which resulted in goals to Casey. Two goals in a 9 point win were the difference. Well done Williams, next step is to start plucking a few pack marks at FF, On another note there were two Casey players well worth talking about. One who's alreadys been mentioned is Tim Smith. 21 years of age, 192cm, 90kg, has a strong pair of hands and took an absolute screamer in the final term to go with his 2 goals. Every time I see him play I'm more and more impressed. Seems to have the ability to play high HF or closer to goal and we really need key forwards. He's be well worth a rookie selection IMO. And another player, today being the first time I've seen him play was Nathan Page. 12 years of age, 177cm, 75 kg. Getting a game ahead of Casey veteran Rian McGough and William Petropoulos as the small crumbing forward. His disposal was good, his pressure and chasing were top notch and kicked 2 traditional small forward goals in the last. The first of which I could have sworn was Stepehn Milne hitting a pack at pace from a stoppage and streaming into goal to put the Scorpions in front for the first time in the match. Another player who'd be a rookie roughie as we're crying out for a small forward.3 points

There are 2 Tigers players that are very sore after playing against us on Saturday due to Spencer. That puts Spencil in the Elite bracket on our list.3 points

Welcome back Colin. You are once again proving to be our best player and any talk by people on this site suggesting you being traded is being shown to be a complete joke. Say what you want about Col, be disappointed that he isn't Dane Swan or Robert Harvey, but embrace the face he is Col Sylvia. Col is an elite kick, mark and has elite strength. Sure he's not going to get 35+ touches a week, but who in this side ever will? After breaking his back in the pre season, Col eased into the season and is now again showing how much better he is than anyone else on our list.2 points

I reckon Wellingham should get (or any player) at least the equivalent time out of the game as the poor bugger he gutlessly crunched!!! I realise he got 5 reduced to 3, but no way would carltank think that is anywhere near compensation and i would agree with them!!! Poor precedent set, AFL should step in on this one!!!2 points

I will remind you all [yet again] that he has not finished inside the top 5 in our b&f in 8 seasons. That's what the club (ie: people in the know) think of him. Take off your rose coloured glasses and realise that Col is the most frustrating player on our list bar none because he has super talent but cannot produce consistently.2 points

It was so good to hear that Jack Fitzpatrick was adjudged to be B.O.G yesterday. Just over three weeks ago the kid was diagnosed with Diabetes. An outstanding effort in anybodies eyes. I recently read where one poster considered him deadwood. Given his illnesses and injuries his development will take time but I suspect we might have uncovered a good one in Big Fitzy.2 points

You had Magner on the list to be gone 2 years ago? Can I have a loan of your crystal ball? I need to know how much longer we have to put up with the tripe we've seen this season.2 points

I know we could list reasons why we have been so poor for so many years. Skills, decision making, recruiting, contracts, training facilities (Junction Oval), coaches, finances, culture, etc. What I want to understand is why has this happened for so long and how has this become the norm? I really don't get why just about every other club has made basic, simple, responsible decisions that have moved their club forward and created some on field success. Or at least some form of positive hope. Why do we seem to go from bad to worse year after year? Why have club structures not created a unity of purpose and drive that has resulted in on field success. False dawns are hard to take. I know we are much better off financially and Jimmy did a great job of pointing us in the right direction. But we keep falling further back in what is an ever-more cut throat, supporter-led competition. Yes, it's not that simple a matter that can be explained here. People can point to Port Adel or Brisbane (or even back to Fitzroy) and say they struggle/d as well. But I know several Bris and Port fans who wouldn't want to be in our shoes for a million bucks. It's getting very hard to keep supporting this club. But I will, of course, persist. The alternatives are too unthinkable. I love this Club, as did my father and grandfather.2 points

I get that you don't like Morton, picket. So much so that you want a medal of martyrdom. You're clearly biased against him, so don't expect your views on him to be taken by the Demonland readers as being objective. Does that mean that I think the sun shines from Cale's ass? No, but he has some excellent attributes that, if harnessed, could help the side a lot.2 points

Decision making is over rated. If your teammates work hard to make good options, the decision becomes obvious and easy. The skills also become easier to execute because the option is obvious and easy...2 points

It's not pathetic at all, if anything Jaded has it the right way around more than anything I reckon. There's absolutely nothing to be gained by hanging crap on the less talented players. It's why largely couldn't care less when guys like Bennell or Spencer or even Dunn have poor games, because I know that these guys have low ceilings and they're probably doing the best they can. It's when the top end talent fails to deliver that is the hardest to swallow; it's their form that affects us the most. Spencer and co are just easy targets for people who don't want to look for the real problems.2 points
-
Or number three our fitness. The player with the ball tires too quickly which means they cant execute or make the correct decision when tired. The player without the ball does not run to space or effectively block meaning that the options we do have are limited and usually covered. West Coast players couldn't hit the side of a barn two years ago now look at the them move the ball.Fix the fitness and get the gameplan more embedded and then we can see how bad the skills actually are.2 points

Sounds like we're waiting for the planets to allign for Cook's debut. Surely we couldn't be a worser team for it. Even if we are- what's the difference between a 30 point loss and a 50 point loss. I'd rather 60+ point losses whilst getting games into kids than 30 point losses with players who are either past it, or never had it. Stuff this trying to play the most "competitive" team, give games to the kiddies and give them to them NOW!1 point

I was at Casey and often find that it's hard to see what's happening on the other side of the ground clearly as it's difficult to get any elevation for viewing. My view was from the outer. I thought Morton was ordinary in the first half but most of Casey were. His second half was very very good. He ran hard, he linked up and was integral to Casey getting back in the game. Just watching him it's hard to believe how much ground he covers. He seems to be making better decisions and taking the first option more often and is much more direct. I'm not convinced he'll make it but he played well IMO. Couch seemed to be played forward in the second half and did well kicking goals and finding some space. For those that haven't seen him much think of a slightly larger Valenti although I think Valenti shades him. He's a very good VFL footballer but I'm not sure it translates into AFL status although today is the most damaging game I've seen him play. Petterd seemed to play in bursts but like so many others on our list just hasn't taken the next step. Davey will play next week, his disposal is a class above and while he is a long way from what he was at least he is an offensive threat. I really think that Gysberts has to play the rest of our season. He's a midfielder who can at least find the ball, something we are in short supply of in the seniors. The others have been well covered.1 point

On another note, it's really good to hear that Gysberts is continuing to work hard defensively in stoppages as well as winning the footy. Tom Couch, kicking 4 goals, indicates that he's spreading more and getting into space. That's what he needs to do more of to become an AFL player, and there's a good chance that he could come in this week (if that was the case). Green doing well and getting good possession numbers as well as goals should help us in the AFL. Especially now that we have a couple of tall forwards playing (Garland and Rivers) which should allow him to get a smaller opponent which is when he excels. He doesn't have the pace to mismatch the big guys, but he is still much better overhead than most smalls.1 point

Wow.... Just wow.... Joel has been one of our best the last few weeks, might not be very skillful, but works his a$$ off and actually runs unlike most of our players. As for your Watts comment.... What is this 2009?! Catch up mate.1 point

Yes, I know him reasonably well. He did his knee mid season and never performed to the same level as earlier in the year. Played mostly ruck later in the year also. Recruiters didnt want to take any risks with him as obviously there was a big go home factor. Was very skillful when ball was in his area but never chased or tackled and moped around when things didnt go his way. Class talent though.1 point

Alot of people on these threads are just p!ssing into the wind naming any old player that comes to mind or is fringe at best. We already have enough of our own. Please people focus on needs, remember we arent going to win a flag in the near future, don't get your hopes up that Jack Viney will automatically come straight in and be a superstar, I'm still not totally sold on his disposal quality myself. He will be consistent and always give his all and put his head in the firing line, but I'm not so sure he's elite class personally, I have him rated about 8th in the draft. We desperately needs mids, quality/classy & maybe pacey mids. You can have as many big bodies grunt players as you like but if they keep turning it over then its not going to win you games of footy. We have a few big bodied mids who when they actually do turn it over are too slow to give a good chase. On turnovers our disposal is atrocious for AFL standard, I'm sure I could hit a target better! I thought over the years this may have improved but to me it doesnt look like it will (which frustrates me) so hence why we need to draft mids that are accurate disposers of the footy. So classy mids & maybe a couple of rookie/late draft small forwards, theres normally a few around late draft as theyre either considered too short or too much risk involved. Ive put up stats before about small forwards & Milnes stats are way above anyone else for consistancy etc. Betts not far behind, but theres not too many that make it & kick goals consistantly. We need a big influx of goals from our mids from next year onwards, alot of the top teams have their mids kicking a couple of goals a game whereas we struggle. Eg: Swan, Pendles, Beams, Thomas, Sidebottom always snag a few between them, they dont really have a designated small forward who pops up week in/week out kicking goals. Unlike some on here I actually think Lucas Cook will make it, probably at FF with Clark as a damaging roaming CHF. Lucas has all the attributes & skill levels & is impressing at VFL level with his marking, leading & creating contests, just because he hasnt kicked bags of late doesnt mean he isnt doing his forward role well. I was talking to Lucas the other day and he said hes keen to start round 1 next year and make the FF position his own, he said he just needs to get a bit bigger/stronger and he will be all good. He said he was 195cm & 88kgs. He said hes really improved his leading to the right areas & creating a contest. I rate Neeld, he is the culture changer that this club desperately needed, still not totally convinced he can coach yet but I will give him his time, its been a bad year. Also the poor bugger just doesnt have the quality & intelligence he probably had at the Pies so I reckon his coaching will come to the fore when we draft some elite mids, hopefully! All going well pick 3,4,13 & Viney, plus a fit Gysberts, Trengove, Jurrah, Cook things might start turning our way. By all means snag a couple of free agents along the way, some late draft fringe players if need be & dispose of the rubbish that is making "OUR" football club look pathetic. Remember our mission to be the "club of the decade" anyone?? Expect big changes at seasons end & I can say I know the club is targetting another power forward & 3 quality mids, could be from draft, do not stress, our recruiting is in good hands & I wouldnt be suprised if we didnt snag Matt Rendall in the future also. Have a good day!1 point

Im going to the club now to tell the club what needs to happen. lolIm sure all the guys at the club are working very hard for this up coming draft. I think Todd Viney is in a great position to find the best talent in this draft. I also think he will go for players that he likes no more skinny weak kids. He son is a great start for that. Jack would have a real great idea of who the best players are first hand which would be also very handy for the dees.1 point

Yes we have got to go into the mini draft to pick this man child up.I would think we could get him and Martin with our pick 3 and a player for GWS. Cant see them getting any better then that. Maybe if we just want Hogan we could trade pick 13. Then we get viney rnd 2 and have picks 3,4 win win1 point
