Welcome to Demonland: Jack Steele

Featured Replies

Replaced one Jack with another Jack to pair with Jack in the midfield.

Obviously bought in as a tough nut mid to work in tandem with Vines. Good m ove Dees.

Will compliment our young quicker mids very well.

are you serious?

steele for a 2027 3rd round pick is a, well, steal

as good a player as oliver has been the last couple of seasons and a much better contributor to the culture

Jack.... what a Steele

Exactly the kind of player we need to have around the likes of Tholstrup.

If you'd told me separately that Oliver and Steele would be traded for such junk draft picks I'd have been surprised at the fact and offended on each of their behalf.

If you told me that Oliver (2025 variety) was effectively traded for Steele, I'd be ambivalent but accepting.

I like Jack Steele. I think he's underrated, perhaps on account of having to try to fill the shoes of St Kilda's tragic generation of stars.

Aaaand now he gets to work in the shadow of the bitter disappointment left by two of - at their best - the best players of their period.

I was a NO unless he was being given away or the year was 2018. Well, its column A. This is ridiculously cheap, its great trading. The cap issue isnt a big deal as it will be gone by 2028 (and we have to spend a minimum) Anyone we want to sign next year still can be back loaded into 2029 and beyond.

Btw, where can I get odds on a Casey flag for 26?

Interesting. I just heard David King and Jon Ralph slamming us for paying the entirety of Steele’s wages on Fox’s Trading day.

King said it’s a poor pick up without actually uttering the words.

He’s allegedly on a $1 million a year.

No, surely Kane and Ralphy couldn't be wrong?

I have connections with the Steele family - they are a very supportive, caring and well grounded family.

performance + injury aside, this is another great team culture move.

We have a cadre of yound mids that need leadership. Langford, Windsor, Lindsey, Kolt, even Bowey and Rivers will benefit greatly from having another level headed, experienced guy to learn from. They weren't getting that from Oliver or Petracca.

This is a great development move

That’s a nice bonus.

Maggot Media priority is always money costs. Hence nothing about the player, just the cost.

Are we now the most foreign legion team of the league? Steele, Mihocek, Jiath, Heath, May, Lever, Langdon, Melksham, Culley, Sharp, Campbell, McAdam.

If so, let's embrace it, and achieve like this mob (albeit their tag had interstate, rather than interclub, roots):

Good pick up. Even if we get two solid years out of him. Adds some protection around the ball for the younger brigade. Having Steele and Viney in the middle could work. Viney and Oliver didn't work.

Geeze this club loves guys named jack.

Good luck in the red and blue, give em hell

Well... it's been proffered for quite a while that this Club knows Jack !!

Good role model for current young players, id say he is there as support in the midfield and to show the young guys how to be a professional.

For a third rounder, great get

He is a better kick to start.

This is a really curious trade. Like both Trac and Claz, Steele was one of the best players in the comp in the early 20s. I haven't followed his trajectory over the past few years, but clearly his form dropped and he fell out of favour. The odd thing is that unlike Trac and Claz, he is being shown the door despite being, from all accounts, an excellent clubman and leader - their captain! While it hurts to lose Claz for a third round pick and to pay out half is salary - I fully understand it. For St Kilda to do something similar for the club captain - I don't fully understand it. Some strange Saints down Moorabin way.

If he can get his fitness right - I think this is a fantastic trade. I have more faith in this trade than any of Billings, Schache, Fullarton, Sharp, etc. Steele has played at the highest level - he is tough, can mark overhead and his kicking his solid. There is also the motivation that comes with being rejected. I suspect that will be driving him all throughout the pre-season and beyond.

Welcome Jack

As part of the effort to trim the runtime of the regular podcast, we’ve been looking at which segments could be reshaped without losing what makes them valuable. One segment that naturally came into focus was Binman’s Stats Files. Not because it isn’t important; quite the opposite. It’s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
