POSTGAME: Rd 17 vs Adelaide

More to like than dislike, but hugely disappointed.

LIKE - Our general play was good but not great. Loved seeing JVR and Jeffo together and hope to see them for the remainder of the year. Steven May, Lever, Kozzie, Melksham, getting games into Lindsay, Langford, Jeffo.

DISLIKE - Our in close handball chains/patterns were horrendous. Goal kicking in the first quarter. Fumbling & slipping over. Petracca's lack of intensity and potency.

Yet another game we should have won, but didn’t

Nothing changes with Goodwin & Co

Not Fit enough above the shoulders…

The Football Department needs a serious clean out

I reckon we win that game if Disco plays forward and TMac back. 16 marks and kicks straight.

Not sure about win but totally agree. JVR and Turner are our best two young options up forward.

If I was in charge I’d never take Kozzie off. I feel they got back in the game in the 2nd when Kozz was off for 5-10 mins. He was ripping them a new one up to that point.

It's just a game of whack-a-mole with us. You fix our intercept defenders but then we get belted around the ball which has been a strength of ours before the bye.

You fix our goal kicking from the second qtr onwards but then we don't get it in there enough (mostly due to being belted around the ball)

McVee's had a couple games like that. He just plays too loose. Salem was garbage and Bowey got shut down

Rankine and Soligo love playing against us.

Also, Fritsch has had some poor games in his time but that was horrific. But who comes in for him? I'd actually rather Petracca play that half forward role and leave Viney, Oliver and Pickett in the middle.

Great games from Viney, Bowey, Disco and Melksham.

38 marks across Disco, May and Lever is crazy.

The goal review system is garbage.

Could we please have a couple more meaningless shots of the Crows coach in the box doing sweet FA?

worst shot selection on a telecast ever during that game.

Goal kicking. Practice on drop punts and proper set shots anytime soon?

And the. The forward setup.

3 mins left and our last two clean entries are kicked hard against the line in the forward pocket.

Is this under 12s footy?

this club seems to be so dumb and so slow to deal with problems that are obvious to everyone

Petracca and Oliver, thanks for your service.

Yes, they're not optimal at present, but where do you find replacements?

Same old same old sort of result, some hard calls need to be made on some of our older players as we clearly aren’t in a contending phase anymore. Do we move on players like May, Salem, Oliver and Langdon so we can bring in some younger players who can be there for the next push at the risk of even more pain in the short term. We can probably get some picks back for some of them and cap space would let us bring in some other players if there was some interest

Melksham definitely gets another year, maybe even two.

May and Lever were much better today. Turner is a gun.

Kosi continues to shine as one of the premier hybrids.

I want to see more of Langford. His decision making is excellent.

Viney and Max battled manfully and Rivers was good early.

The drop off from Tracc is “kinda” understandable given his age and injury, but why oh why is Clarry so bad aged 27? He should be in his prime.

Big JT fan but Jefferson and Kolt look like busts. Trading some good picks to move up for Kolt is looking disastrous given our lack of depth.

Another honorable loss. It’s [censored] depressing having dead rubbers this early in the year .

Dont be ridiculous. Turner has shown repeatedly this year he a better footballer than his opponent and is saving the game, if not saving humanity, by playing down back.

He knows how to win a contested mark and is quick on his feet and reflexes. Our football department is very, very savvy and know exactly what they are doing playing him down back as we have multiple great young forwards that fulfil their role perfectly week in week out.

Well battled.

Effort was there.

Really sick of losing. This is a results industry and yeah, we may not be as experienced as yesteryears and carry a lot of young talent, but no one can say we didn’t have chances to potentially play finals. The same mistakes and lack of ability to close out matches has been costly.

This game went begging, as did Collingwood, GWS, St Kilda, Hawthorn and Port Adelaide . We really should be at 9-10 wins and giving our ourselves a serious chance with North, St Kilda, Carlton and West Coast to come.

Such a frustrating nearly season as simply playing finals would propel and give experience to the likes of Langford and Lindsay into a greater sphere in 2026.

Can't fault the effort.

But it's about the 5th winnable game in a row where poor kicking in the first quarter cost us the game.

Rinse n repeat

Honestly I've found this season so draining and deflating to the point where I just don't really care. I know that sounds bad but that's just how it is.

See I pretend I don’t care for 6 days of the week and then we actually play and I find some reason to have hope and then it becomes clear I still do care and then I inevitably end up miserable and furious.

Yes time running out we kick to the pocket or backwards. Surely a coach instruction but you can’t win doing that. It was like we were trying to save the game

Well it was a lot better than the thrashing many on here expected.

Our short handballs to a player about to be tackled were a worry. Maybe due to too many players getting too close to the action.

the problem with this is he's also our best key defender

peter, gotta pay paul

Wasted a strong first quarter with woeful kicking and basically dropped our bundle after 10 minutes of exceptional play in the second. Never looked like it in the second half.

Too many passengers (Jefferson, Tholstrup, Fritsch, Sparrow and Co), poor skills, especially by hand, and weak tackle efforts cost us a game that was there to be won.

Sadly we are at full strength, with an experienced and seasoned team, so there are absolutely no excuses.

we do a lot right but our deplorable skills let us down. we just can't capitalise on our good work.

kossie and melks the standouts

we have 2 highly paid players who are not giving us enough. clarry not near enough for the coin he is on

i reckon one has to be traded. Fritsch needs to go as well.

try and use whatever we get on skilled players.

In Jeffos defence I reckon there was at least 3 times he was clear 20-25metres out in the forward 50 where he would have had an easy shot on goal had any of our players decided to lower their eyes. Halved a few aerial contests as well. Low bar I know but I think I've seen a few snippets to see he's worth persisting with long term.

He's incredibly light and easily out-bodied by most players which doesnt help him when we move the ball as poorly as we do. I think he'll come on but is probably at least 2 years away from seriously contributing at a consistent level.

Boys had a crack today, but we just can’t seem to maintain pressure or quality, and we get burnt by teams who can.

JVR had a pretty good game and that’s my one positive.

Chin and Rivers have to play more midfield for the rest of the year together with Kosi.

I hate this season and it can’t end soon enough

Rivers, Langford, Picket and JV.

Move Petracca to 90% time at HF.

Oliver can spend the rest of the season at Casey.

Poor kicking for goal cost us the win (again)

We should have put the game away. Crows were always going to come at us but the buffer wasn't big enough

Then the heads dropped and that was that

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
