There’s something about Swans supporters that really gets my goat - have had a few run-ins after games at the G. (All unprovoked by me, of course.)

Anyway, to be fair, there’s a few comedians over on their Big Footy forum.

General gist:

  • Gawn looms large as a threat, especially his intercept marks, and whether he goes ‘beast mode’

  • They don’t seem to rate May and Lever much any more, although acknowledge we rarely lose with both in team

  • They think it’s a toss of the coin who’s fwd line is worse

  • The intro had an amusing tale of the tagging that may take place - a merry-go-round of tags on tags on tags (starting with Claz on Chad)

  • There’s a cheap jibe about Dees supporters only being relevant for the Mt Buller tourism trade and propping up VIC’s struggling economy. Or maybe that was about their player Buller - it was confusing

  • They were lamenting their two suspensions from last week’s game and nervous about the Dees’ return to form

  • They’re very worried about Kozzie running amok, and the only viable match-up being Wicks

  • They seem quite obsessed about what the weather will be like and if it will be wet or dry (sound familiar? 😄)

Overall, they’re not particularly confident, and a little nonplussed about their season in general.

Every one of these opposition threads worries about Gawn. He goes into "beast mode" when we, as a team, get our structures right and force them to kick it down the line.

Everone is making a deal of Clarry tagging now, nobody mentions he tagged Bont in the 3rd quater in our only premiership in 50 years and turned the momentum

I’ve had a couple of run-ins with swans fans but at the SCG. Worst one was when Howes took that hanger and we got flogged. I was about 16 years old and went up to the toilet with about 9 minutes left in the game (was coming back to watch the rest) and copped it from everyone as I went up the steps because they thought I was leaving and had lots to say. Back then I was in shock at what they were saying because I was only young and never experienced that yet. Mind you most saying things were 50+ year old men. Now I’d have more to say haha

What kind of pathetic low-life mouths off at a 16yo minding their own business?

Right!

I wouldn’t even do this to a fellow adult…. Unless of course they’ve been lippy but honestly even then I probably wouldn’t haha. I did not want to go back down to the seat.

Sydney supporters are just Melbourne supporters from temu.

Of all the supporter groups to pull this one out! The Chardonnay sippers from Sydney must be saying this with tongue in cheek surely.

Some (lots of?) people are just absolute grubs, especially when they feel shielded by the anonymity of the mob.

Unfortunately there’s many. And it’s not just 16yos they pick on.

A few years ago I was at the ‘G, Melb vs Hawks, I was on my own and found myself up in the nosebleeds surrounded by Hawks supporters and this one Hawks supporter just wouldn’t let up. He started with bagging the Dees but before long he turned on me. All manner of filthy comments were thrown my way, progressively getting more offensive.

He was so belligerent that no one was game enough to say anything. It got to the point where I went from being annoyed and disgusted to - for the first time ever at the footy - genuinely scared.

At halftime I was so distressed I left and as I was leaving his parting salvo was “Yeah, if ya can’t [censored] handle it, Princess, [censored] off home!” So I took his advice and [censored] off home.

When I got outside the ground a security guy saw me and was concerned as to why I was so upset. I told him what’d happened and he was furious. He said there’s no way I should miss the match because of one a-hole so he took me back inside, walked me to Bay M3 and said, “Just go and sit in this bay. You’ll feel safe.”

I did that and just as I sat down, a goal was kicked by iirc Max and all of the sudden flags and giant heads appeared outta nowhere and I realised I was sitting in the cheer squad.

From that day on I never sat anywhere else.

I guess I’ve got that revolting Hawks fan to thank for discovering the Demon Army.

Yeah nah [censored] him. I would’ve discovered the DA eventually 😁

Sydney fans for so long had no idea wtf was going on. “Jolly good number 5” was about where they were at. Now they have grown to be as obnoxious as many other supporter groups- the ones that feel ‘entitled’ are the worst!

Yes true and what a monumental effort that was🤩

Not missing much, I don’t know why but footy never feels the same there. Also the ground has a massive crown in it meaning sitting ground level pocket feels like being in a bunker.

Note : can’t get hot jam donuts and no train to the ground.

My mum took me and some friends to the footy at Windy Hill one day. A group of private school boys and their Mum slap bang in the Essendon cheer squad. Surprisingly they were very good natured to us, made easier by a comfortable Bombers win. My main memory is of the guy standing next to me, head to toe in Essendon gear with a thick rubber band wrapped around his head flattening his nose. To this day I’ve no idea why he wore it.

These days I like smaller crowds and won’t be going to KB, their supporters aren’t worth the trouble.

Those days were awesome 👌 never felt unsafe at any of the suburban grounds - vic park, windy Hill, moorabbin, western oval all had there own personality and witnessed some absolute nut jobs - lots and lots of banter - some awful, most fully in jest. Was always fun getting amongst the local ferals

I never felt unsafe going to the footy as a kid. KB in 22 in the MCC members my partner got told “to sit down you stupid c…” The lack of intelligent banter, the overt aggression, the literal frothing at the mouth made for an ordinary day. I love some good natured banter and you still get it but it’s not as common these days.

Slightly off topic but relevant for those who’ve been harangued or abused by opposition supporters:

Some years ago we were playing the Magpies and as inevitability has it, I was surrounded by evil opposition supporters.

I’m pretty sure we were being trounced so when I made a negative comment aloud about a Collingwood player all hell broke loose.

A Collingwood player , Lockyer, was awarded a free kick and without hesitation I called out, ‘ get a real name Tarquin ‘(his actual first name ) I thought it was a pretty harmless request, but fists were raised in my direction not to mention the profound umbrage and verbal aggression that spewed forth .

At a quiet moment I let myself out😱

Yeah same at Collingwood where they all wear rubber bands around their noses to stop what little Brains they have from escaping out from their Nasal cavities!

Yeah I grew up in Kew near Vic Park and went to quite a few games there with a friend who was a Magpie supporter. As you say, lots of rough but friendly and funny jest. (Although I was a kid so wasn’t ever going to be at risk!)

I spent all week in Sydney wearing my Demons scarf (fair enough in the weather, too) and got not one interaction for the trouble.

Soulless zombie-with-makeup city.

Anyway, I would guess their online forums have been especially busy this week, what with the solid 24hrs of the entire train network coming to a halt. I was coming home from Sydney's west in the mid-afternoon and gut instinct saved the day - after another 'waiting for information' announcement I got off and walked from Granville to Ashfield and (let me be clear I am not exaggerating) I probably covered that 16km trip faster than anyone else that day.

Walking past Lidcombe I diverted through the station just to check on progress and FFS there was one station guard looking after at least 2,000 confused people with no official communications coming even about train replacement buses. He was actually getting ready to abandon his post at the station to go down to the street level because there was beginning to be a real sense of danger as footpath traffic was spilling onto main roads.

So, fingers crossed, hopefully Sydney's game tomorrow will run as smooth as their train network.

Was there, too, Dg, visiting all-'Swannies' brother n family.

Too numb to remember any crowd behaviour. Own family gracious enough to be commiserational.

Even the Howe mark was on the other wing. And he handballed it off for a turnover...

Pies supporters typically vile!

Blues & Hawks arrogance personified!

Swans don’t know any!

Twas a regular day at the G , very early 80s.

Melb v Collingwood.

I attended with.2 mates ( both similarly tragically D ) and one's younger brother...who for some God forsaken reason was a Geelong barracker.

As game progressed... some verbalised enhancements from all sectors were heard. Younger Cats supporter had trannie plastered to ear ( meant something very different then ) ...until Cats kicked well clear ..and young lad joined the Melbourne chorus. Quite bizarrely some old hag ...and I kid you not...frontal-toothless.... took great offence that this inoffensive young lad wearing a Navy and white scarf should suddenly find voice in the benefit of the Dees.

She literally started belting him with her bag.

I must confess the Senior lads were utterly ill composed and fell about laughing before we assumed the righteousness of life and confronted the black and white devil.

We won... a very strange day

Where we sit at the SCG - which isn’t behind the goals (as it should be) coz that’s where Sydney members sit - we have to leave the first three rows empty because of that convex centre of the field. I don’t understand why it can’t be levelled 🤷‍♀️

I know a Swans supporter- at least she claims to be. She knows nothing about football, has no idea of the players names and only comes out of the woodwork when the Swans are winning. When I ask her does she think the swans will win this week - she looks at me blankly and asks who they are playing. No idea 🙄

  • PREVIEW: Sydney

The two teams competing at the MCG on Sunday afternoon have each traversed a long and arduous path since their previous encounter on a sweltering March evening in Sydney a season and a half ago. Both experienced periods of success at various times last year. The Demons ran out of steam in midseason while the Swans went on to narrowly miss the ultimate prize in the sport. Now, they find themselves outside of finals contention as the season approaches the halfway mark. The winner this week will remain in contact with the leading pack, while the loser may well find itself on a precipice, staring into the abyss. The current season has presented numerous challenges for most clubs, particularly those positioned in the middle tier. The Essendon experience in suffering a significant 91-point loss to the Bulldogs, just one week after defeating the Swans, may not be typical, but it illustrates the unpredictability of outcomes under the league’s present set up.

  • REPORT: Brisbane

“Max Gawn has been the heart and soul of the Dees for years now, but this recent recovery from a terrible start has been driven by him. He was everywhere again, and with the game in the balance, he took several key marks to keep the ball in the Dees forward half.” - The Monday Knee Jerk Reaction: Round Ten Of course, it wasn’t the efforts of one man that caused this monumental upset, but rather the work of the coach and his assistants and the other 22 players who took the ground, notably the likes of Jake Melksham, Christian Petracca, Clayton Oliver and Kozzie Pickett but Max has been magnificent in taking ownership of his team and its welfare under the fire of a calamitous 0-5 start to the season. On Sunday, he provided the leadership that was needed to face up to the reigning premier and top of the ladder Brisbane Lions on their home turf and to prevail after a slow start, during which the hosts led by as much as 24 points in the second quarter. Titus O’Reily is normally comedic in his descriptions of the football but this time, he was being deadly serious. The Demons have come from a long way back and, although they still sit in the bottom third of the AFL pack, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel as they look to drive home the momentum inspired in the past four or five weeks by Max the Magnificent who was under such great pressure in those dark, early days of the season.

  • CASEY: Southport

The Southport Sharks came to Casey. They saw and they conquered a team with 16 AFL-listed players who, for the most part, wasted their time on the ground and failed to earn their keep. For the first half, the Sharks were kept in the game by the Demons’ poor use of the football, it’s disposal getting worse the closer the team got to its own goal and moreover, it got worse as the game progressed. Make no mistake, Casey was far and away the better team in the first half, it was winning the ruck duels through Tom Campbell’s solid performance but it was the scoreboard that told the story.
