John Longmire Resigns

Whats happened/ What a shock!

wow… brutal life at the top isn’t it. He’s  of the absolute best coaches going around. If the swans had finished 3rd instead of losing another GF I wonder if he stays. Doesn’t feel like a good move.

Assistant coach at the dees?

Get a kick.

Well this is and isn't a shock

I suspect he has reflected on his past 4 GFs and come to the conclusion that he is not the person to take them to the next step.

He was gutted by the capitulation after a stellar year and I can understand why he would say, enough

Of course the Board may have come to the same conclusion and he was pushed.....

No real surprise. Sydney had clearly earmarked a transfer at some stage from Longmire to Cox. Implementing the succession plan now might always have been planned, but just not been made public. It's how stable clubs should operate.

Would love John Longmire as an assistant coach at the Demons.

But I suspect he will take a year or two off coaching and then wait for a coaching opportunity at another AFL Club.

Saw the Swans draft another bunch of flankers and decided to pull the plug

assistant coach at the dees is now the short cut to getting a coaching gig. lol. But yes, most likely a media role and then fits bk in the next time a senior coach is taken down. Even so, I hope we ask the question.

half the team should go with him after their efforts from the last 2.

Maybe he just has had enough? Its a long time in the pressure seat.  From what I have seen at the Swans is he probably goes out on his own terms rather than some sort of board coup (of course I could be very wrong).

Lucky they had an unofficial succession plan in place and could put in Cox at any time they needed.

There wouldn't be too many losing coaches in AFL history to coach in 3 grand finals where the game was effectively over at half time. Furthermore, 2016 will haunt Longmire and the Swans as it was a GF they went in as heavy favs.

Assuming he still wants to coach I can imagine a few clubs showing interest for 2026 and beyond.

Oh to be a club that doesn't leak.

This has probably been a conversation with Dean Cox for a couple of months. You can guarantee Cox would have been having significant input into trade and draft conversations with this transition in mind.

I have mixed feelings about Longmire's legacy.

Zero doubt he is a very good coach, but I cringe when people describe him as great or one of the best. In the end, with a lot of favours going his way (coaching a club in solid form with ideal facilities and established culture, significant home ground advantage, which had already played finals almost continuously for 15 years, and which wasn't subject to the 'natural cycle' thanks to academy pick top-ups) his coaching record is roughly on par with Simon Goodwin.

As soon as Dean Cox ruled himself out of WC job..this was def on the cards. Not bad timing..Cox will effectively be there for the preseason of the whole team. The coaches under pressure next season will be a tad nervous with Longmire in the background…

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
