DiscoStu17 875 Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 Glad to hear that he’s staying. North will have to content themselves with wine or Wines? 1 Quote

Or even a 3 year deal over 30? Wheres the faith between the club and player that they’ll keep playing at the right pay rate for as long as needed. 4 is bonkers. You don't know the structure of the deal. How do you know it's not heavily front loaded on an already veteran salary? 7 Quote

What an absolute joke. 4 years for a beat up one dimensional mid who has to nurse a cooked shoulder through half the game. We all love Jack. We all want to keep Jack, but 2 years was the deal. 4??? Seriously, what are we doing here??? And we are surprised that guys like Tracc are looking out for number 1 when we just hand out whatever our leaders want? Something is badly wrong here and we are bribing our leaders in to staying. Are you actually Serious here or just taking the pizz?? 2 1 Quote

Melbournepotter 388 Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 Well, you can never be 100% sure I guess, but after Viney looked a Rowe on the weekend and said ' contested footy beast ?..I'll show you what a contested footy beast looks like....' (my words, not his) I suspected he wouldn't do that if he was intending to leave. I'm glad he sticks around. 1 1 Quote

Deelectable 1,043 Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 Here we are. The living certainty that Viney, Petracca and Oliver are staying is coming to fruition. It was always 100% definite. The 4 years does seem generous but is it heavily front ended? Not too concerned but hoping so. I really hope we learn a lesson and follow the Geelong model (apologies!) and we manage Jack and Max the way they have with Dangerfield etc. If not the longer contracts are somewhat fraught and we won't be getting the best out of two champs of the club. 3 Quote
JTR 2,910 Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 The extension is 3, not 4. He was already contracted until the end of 2025. 6 2 Quote
Demonstone 23,590 Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 No surprises about the identify of the handful of Demonland posters who are determined to look for the dark cloud surrounding the silver lining of both Max and Jack re-signing. 11 2 Quote
demon3165 2,865 Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 I can understand why at the moment, and as people have already said, we don't know the contract situation and how it's paid. But the reality is Viney won't be playing in the seniors past the next two to three years because of his pace and body. Good luck to him. Quote
Demon_spurs 1,984 Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 I love Jack, but I wonder how much extra that "slip" on the Gold Coast interview got him Quote

I think it's really clear there's a trend at Melbourne where we are happy to sign players to long term contracts. I'd be interested to hear what actual risks there are in doing that for senior leaders of the club. 2 Quote

Fair rebuttal. The counter is he’s played 50 less games than Jack, is a more valuable player and has a lot more flexibility to just sit in a back pocket if needed. He also signed in December with no fuss. If anything that’s what troubles me most. Why is the club so desperate for good news and why was Viney even flirting with North? The only way this is actually positive news rather than just PR is if we are doing something significant with the cap flexibility longer deals provide. Quote

And it’s not just him. Tomlinson overpaid for 5. Melksham, Hibberd, T Mc all signed up well in to their declines. Even if some of the had renaissances. 1 Quote

I think you're discounting the leadership vacuum too heavily. North were no doubt offering 4 years and big bucks. 4 Quote

It would be common practice amongst all the clubs. In fact, it's the best way to construct a contract so as to not be up for big dollars in the last year of a long deal The last year of a deal can therefore be effectively a tack-on year And with the salary cap heading towards $20Million, paying a figure of say, $500k, in the last year of a contract would only represent 2.5% of a year's salary cap Maybe a lot less if the final year of a contract is around $350k to $450k So why don't we hear about the above in the media? How much value would JVR have gotten from some no-name 100th pick being on the list, in contrast to a proven AFL-level forward like Ben Brown? 6 2 Quote
