The Dan Houston Thread

my cousin is a pear supporter and he doesn't think there's any chance they'll let him go

he's vital to them as he sets up all their play behind the ball

It might actually force Port to develop a defensive system.

I think Hinkley is contracted for next year, but surely he's gone at the end of this year?

It's a fair summation, IMO. For mine the biggest noticeable drop-off has been the impact around the defensive contest. I wouldn't say it's for a lack of trying, but as you pointed it seems more to do with a lack of strength and power, with reference to his historical ability around contests. Obviously, this would also link into the drop-off in a kicks penetration.

I still think he has value to us as a club, but he's likely to be of nominal value to another club.

This is fair. Agreed.

I don't recall Salo ever kicking much more than 45m. Most of his passes have always been in that 15-30m region.

I think we'll see some more good footy from Salem. And for what we'd get ina trade and what he adds culturally, Ibe no idea what we'd be trying to do there.

In 2021, Salem received coaches votes in 10/25 games and had an average player rating of 9.7 per game.

Since 2021 he has played 43 games and had coaches votes in just 3/43 games, with an average player rating of 7.0 per game.

If we get Houston, he will become the loose defender behind the ball and I am not sure if Salem can play another role. With Salem going on 30, I think we are better giving games to younger, more dynamic players.

has the afl confirmed as yet as to whether or not you can trade up to two years out, i.e. 2026 picks are up for grabs this year?

the longer they expand it the more 'open' trading will be

The article indicates that's what the road block is. I can't see it myself as Port want picks for this year more than anything.

He's a good player, but i wouldn't consider him a super star, i'd suspect the deal would if he requested a trade consist of our first round pick, and perhaps some other swap of picks/players.

Not sure i'd be willing to give up 2 first rounders for Dan Houston, maybe a first and a future second or something like that.

Nah he's better than just a good player. He'd be in the top couple of HBF's in the comp. A lot of Port supporters are saying he's their best player, which is high praise considering they've got the likes of Butters and Rozee.

2021 is a bit of an outlier, because our system was set up for Salem. He was constantly our guy at the back of stoppage or loose ball situations that would get us out of trouble with short, precise kicks.

2022 saw some teams tagging him and 2023 saw us change the way we wanted to move the ball. These events have coincided with more fitness struggles that has meant continuity has been difficult.

It's a tough one because I'm basically saying if he gets continuity, he'll have a role to play, but history also suggests this is unlikely over multiple years anyway.

Really like the possibility of this happening, a prodigious kicking half back is something we dearly lack at the moment. McVee, Rivers, Salem and Bowza all favour the dinky, safe kicks.

Houston was an All-Australian last year driving the powers ball movement, would love him to come over and be given some freedom to keep doing his thing.

Had a glance at the bigfooty Port forum and they're beside themselves at the prospect of losing Houston. Throwing up all sorts of outlandish trade demands and that "we'd want more than just a straight swap with Pickett".

Which, while being insane, goes to show how highly they rate him.

I really rate Houston and would love him at Melbourne.  He is a gun.

But I gotta laugh at Port fans thinking they are more any chance of getting Pickett in a trade for him. Delusional.

Sadly, if we miss finals we could end up with a pick between 6 - 10.

An option maybe to split our pick.

Freo currently have theirs, ports and pies first rounder. Could enable us to split say 7 for 12 (port) and 15(freo) with some balancing if required.

12 for Houston, we retain 15... or vice versa.

Of course this doesn't work if we get on a roll and win the flag

Given the quality of his kick inside 50 I wonder if we’d offer Houston midfield minutes?

Which could make going after Cumming as well, a reality.

Assuming we finish 11th that's about pick 8.

Is he worth it

Recent trades haven't been stunners and given Tasmania in two years 2024 and 2025 draft picks are gold. We also gave away our second round choice for McAdam

Houston would be a great get. Expensive but good

Think we need to hold some bucks and picks for a gun mid. My fear is that Oliver will never get back to that pinnacle

And I am not sure of anyone has mentioned us trying to get a forward from somewhere..... but I think its a need....🤪

Cal and Riley on Gettable think two first rounders would be a fair price. He's a gun but not sure giving up that much for a soon to be 28 year old would be great business.

Crazy. He’s too old for 2 firsts

Even when Oliver gets back to his best we need some more class and run through the middle.

How do we do this without ending up over spending? He’s 2 years too old for mine at the price they’ll be demanding

Someone will pay that. Hope its not us.

Carlton need defenders and have a magic money tree somewhere.

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
