Honestly, the one thing I can't get out of my head right now is which way will we go after this?

Could be fatal or the making. Fork in the road

Absolute waste of a list.

The great myth. The list just isn't that good once you get past the stars - especially up forward. If we still had Jesse Hogan (for example) you might have a point, but we don't.

Simpson tore Badloss a new one..    must be getting breezy down there  ;) 🤣🤣🤣

WTF has happened to the midfield contingent? No cohesion, no running, no spread from the contest. Individually they are racking up possessions but it’s all defensive stuff under pressure and the ball goes nowhere, usually backwards. Oliver is not doing what Oliver used to do, nothing like it.

This isn't hyperbole, our midfield is one of the worst in the competition.

Some still think it’s the best in the competition.

Essendon are 6 points ahead of us. That angers me more.

I don't think we have a great record as naarm

We haven't won a game as Naarm it's a [censored] jinx if I've ever seen one.

The wrist slashing is predictable. Was a poor performance by us but a team with McGovern, Kelly, Ryan, Waterman and Darling  all playing out of their skins is going to trouble a lot of teams. Then you’ve got Judd 2.0 in Harley Reid. Eagles were too good for us today.

Still 6-4 and in the pack. I don’t think it’s our year but it’s as wide open as ever. Clear out the deadwood like Billings and Ben Brown for younger players and regenerate the list while still pushing for finals.  Woey Jr showed plenty today.

Oliver’s lack of preseason, Tracc down on midfield form and Viney’s continue ball butchering makes our midfield unthreatening.

the selection committee also has much to answer for. Brown is washed. Billings is terrible. We left out Fullerton and Hunter. If you were ever going to try Fullerton this was the chance.

we now are without Lever next week. Langdon is at a wedding in London, supposedly:

We just regressed by about 8 years tonight.

Absolute insipid performance against one of the worst teams in the AFL bar about 4 to 5 VG players plus the young gun Reid.

Lost at selection by continuing to play an underdone Petty and Brown who are both not even close to the level.  Billings as well... putrid.

Fullarton may not have offered much more but should've played ahead of Brown.

No white line fever from far too many,  no run and foot skills horrid.

How so many looked cooked off a 10 day break is mind boggling.

Why May was not put on to Waterman from the get go is astounding.

Fritta about the only player that looked as if he new what he was doing.

Back to the drawing board for all involved.  That was an absolute horror show from start to finish.

May was on Waterman and couldn't go with him

We have been exposed as not a real flag chance.

A shame.

Midfield was flat footed again

Who do we have banging down the door?

It's a worry

I think most of us had an inkling about this and our team this year.

I think that's part of the problem yeah.

Casey's form in general is falling apart compared to previous years. There's no-one banging the door down much at all.

Macadam and Billings appear to be duds.

BBB is shot. Petty, I'm really uncertain about.

Unless we are incredibly lucky to find another Caleb Windsor amongst our youngsters at Casey this year, I think we're going to finish 7th or 8th.

Really think the Petty experiment needs to stop. Or at least get him to Casey if you want him to learn forward "craft".

Rivers needs to stop running past for the handball receive , he never knows where the much is going to when he runs past. It's my pet hate

Really hope it's only up from here for McAdam. I was not impressed, not making the distance from forty?

Also clearly went to the Jeff Garlett school of forward pressure.

Thats the spirit. Need diehards like you to keep me on the straight and narrow. But geez - what a disappointing performance. After a 1 point loss to the paper baggers I thought our performance would've been better tonight. 1st time I've reconsidered my membership. Might not chuck in my membership just yet - thanks to you and your post, and my reflection on what I wrote. But I did think about it before your reply. Thanks THBT.

Our tackling and pressure were pathetic. We just bounced off Harley Reid all day.

what about that kid though. I’ve never seen such a strong first year player. An absolute beast.

2021 feels more and more like a lucky flag in an asterisk* year.

We couldn't win a final in 22 or 23 and this team is far worse.

Will be years before we contend again.

how [censored] dare you claim our flag has an asterisk!

i expect this from my [censored] mates but not melbourne supporters

2020 has an asterisk with short games and 17 rounds. 2021 was business as usual aside from the location of games

Stop the asterisk BS please, I already have to hear it everyday from filth supporters.

The flag was won fair and square, full Qtr and played in front of crowds.

We should do a small rebuild this year, and again I would ask if we really want Goodwin to lead the new team from 2025 onwards?

It'll be 8 years.

Good years 2017, 2018, 2021

Bad years 2019, 2020

So-so years 2022, 2023

2024 is looking like it will fall in a So-so at best.

I haven’t seen our midfield play this poorly for a long time. And it’s been over the past 4-5 games

Viney and Clarry the main 2 out of form but Trac only played one Q today.

Back to the drawing board

It’s genuinely panic stations for our midfield. They’re going as well as Carlton’s defence.

Well, the good news is I wasn't able to watch and so had planned to set aside 2 hours tonight to watch it on delay - but having followed along online, I've been able to save myself 2 hours.

Having seen none of it it's hard for me to comment but I only need to see that we conceded 105 points and 25 scoring shots to know it was bad. I see we were again beaten in CPs and clearances, and again our key forwards barely troubled the statisticians, let alone the scorers.

There are some classic Demonland reactions though. Yes, West Coast barely won a game in 2022-23. But if you think that has any reflection what they're doing in 2024, you're not following football. They are miles better this year, and already had been prior to this game. They are a difficult proposition at home.

But if we can't stop West Coast, a mid-table side at best (and still probably a bottom 4 side) from scoring 105 points whilst holding us to only 70, something isn't right.

True. In 21 we had another 8 to 10 each week who were unlucky not to play.

We lost to a team that has only won 7 games in 3 years

Hang your heads in shame

Goodwin and the selection committee should resign

Hard to fathom we not only lost to such a bad team, but got dominated in every facet of the game. That was as bad a loss as we've ever had under Goodwin. Our midfield is spluttering along. What has happened? Has Mcqualter derailed whatever synergy they used to have? Genuinely confused how one of the most dominant midfields this century has turned to rubbish with largely the same personnel on field.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
