Didn't Heywood play for the Filth in the '70's? Gun recruit from the country.

Is that from that play? Title alludes me.

Adapted from the stage play of the same name. Written by David Williamson (RMIT Alumni).

Jock: A marvelous high mark you took last Saturday. You just seemed to go up and up!
Geoff Hayward: Yeah, i felt like Achilles
Jock: Yes...
[laughs]
Jock: ... Who's he?
Geoff Hayward: A Greek guy who could really jump
Jock: Ah, yeah yeah. Well some of these new Australians, you know they could be real champions, if they forget about soccer and just learn to assimilate.

Current situation is that Swans have lowballed Hayward as they’re happy for him to be the one that goes. He’s currently on $600k a season and was on the “to be dropped list” about 5 times in 2023, but survived due to injuries.  Carlton have been interested for 12 months, the Dees interest is a lot more recent.
Swans are very keen to retain Florent, and by pushing Hayward out, they’ll most likely be able to.

Is our interest more recent because we’ve been told Gus’ contract is off the books? Or because we are resigned to losing Petty? Or is it neither?

I’d prefer Florent for roughly a $2.0m over a 5 year deal. Heading into his prime and is a Vic boy who may want to come home.

Florent’s not getting out of bed for $2 mill over 5 years

A very good player and one I’m glad we’re linked to

But if I had to pick one player for us to chase this off season it’s Max Holmes

He’s an absolute jet and just the type of player who would compliment our existing team

Just a shame the Cats beat us to the punch when we wanted to draft him in 2020 😭

I don't get the interest in Holmes. Quick yeah but seems like a poor kick and not sure he's the best decision maker.

$1.5mill ÷ 4 = $370,000 per annum. Is that what you are suggesting?

Put a zero on that figure and we can have him on minimum wage

I’m only guessing, but he has had a strong start to 2024, and he was particularly good against the Dees in Round Zero, so that may have stimulated their interest. Lever is on the record as saying he’s a very difficult match up as that 3rd/4th tall.
I know the Swans were disappointed with him in 2023, but what we’re seeing now is some of those Swans forwards excelling now that Buddy is not hogging the forward line.
I think he’s a handy player, but I wouldn’t be over stretching for him just because he’s a free agent.

Haywood: It’s all a lot of macho-competitive [censored]. You chase a lump of pigskin around a muddy ground as if your bloody life depended on it and when you get it you kick it to buggery and go chasing it again. Football [censored] me.

Thanks @goodwindees

If I’m not being too greedy, do you have any info on where Max Holmes is at with his contract situation? He’s felt like the one that got away from us ever since 2020…

Appreciate the info as always 🫡

My first thought was that the club could have concerns about McAdams ability to get on the park.

oh wait didn't they say Petty to the crows, Sparrow to the crows next will be Neitz making a comeback come on give it a rest we are 4 rounds in into the season how about we wait till October on to worry about this [censored].

I’ll try to get an update, but as we all know, Geelong is just about the number 1 destination club. They don’t lose players they want to keep, and Max is one they will want to retain.  Couldn’t see him going anywhere in the short, medium term.

Off the top of my head, only a handful recently

Nank and Hannebery were pushed out.

Hannebery was finished physically.

Hayward would be a great pick, he is a much better version of McAdam.

Medium fwd that can chop out in the midfield, the only issue with paying him $$$ is that I think Tholstrup will become that player too.

But if its to get a player that will get us to that last day in September in the next 2 years then that doesn't matter.

I’m with you SONS. Oli Florent all the way.

He’d add to our midfield, especially since Gus had to pull the pin.

Isn’t Heywood another bad kick for goal? Good player, bad finisher

52% career accuracy....just above Florent (who's getting a mention here)  @ 50% and ahead of the specialist small forward Papley @ 47%.  Papley averages 1.6 goals a game.

Do we need another medium forward though?  We have Fritta (1.7 goals a game @ 57% accuracy) & Smacca, who once he gets up to speed appears to be slightly more effective than  Hayward...

Screenshot_20240410_072117_SamsungInternet.jpg.76ca0ff7aeaa322f716df4a10d1f53c5.jpg

We seriously need more mid field class / depth and a KF for 25 and beyond,  assuming Petty's not extending beyond next season and this is BB's last year.

We might also need to replace Maysie if Adams doesn't come on this season.  I'd be seriously considering  Sam Collins for an interim stop gap.  30 yo when he comes out of contract in 25/26.

Just my view but i'd like to see us putting  effort / cap space $$ into these three areas.

Sorry just a top up on the Florent offer. 5 years for a total $2.8m package.  Saw the CBA and rises happening. Swans wouldn’t match it imv.  and they need $$ in salary cap for Grundy, Adams etc and rises for McDonald/Gulden/Blakey etc.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #42 Aidan Johnson

The VFL premiership player was recruited from Werribee to alleviate Melbourne’s forward line woes and give a chop out in the ruck, but he managed only five senior matches in his first season at the club. At times, he was a dominant force at VFL level.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #44 Luker Kentfield

An exciting young key forward, Kentfield was selected in the 2024 mid-season draft but has yet to make his AFL debut. He was sidelined by a severe bout of pneumonia over the summer, which consequently limited his pre-season. Upon his return a month into the season, he commenced in defence but ultimately impressed with his progress at Casey, particularly in the latter part of the season as a strong marking goal kicking forward.

  • AFLW REPORT: West Coast

Melbourne’s response to last week’s heartbreak was emphatic, as the Demons delivered a statement win over West Coast at a windswept Casey Fields. All of the pre-match hype surrounded the coach’s box matchup of Mick Stinear up against his apprentice, Daisy Pearce along with the gloomy weather forecast. In the end, it was less about tactical chess and more about Melbourne’s relentless execution. With rain looming, the DeeArmy and early birds snapped up the best undercover viewing spots.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: West Coast

Epic battle alert.  This Sunday, Casey Fields hosts a coach’s showdown pitting the wits of the master Mick Stinear (92 games, 71.7% win rate) against his protégé Daisy Pearce (16 games, 43.8%). Still early in her coaching journey, Daisy’s record doesn’t yet reflect her impact — but she’s already the best-performed coach at West Coast.Dais’ is mythic.  Like Katniss Everdeen, everyone either wants to kiss her, kill her (sporting metaphor) or be her.  Toothers Daisy Pearce is a role model, someone admired for their heart, humility and humour.

  • AFLW REPORT: Port Adelaide

Well, that was a shock. The Demons 4-game unbeaten run came to a grinding halt in a tense, scrappy affair at the sunny, windy Alberton Oval, with the Power holding on for a 2-point win. The Dees had their chances—plenty of them—but couldn't convert when it mattered most. Port’s tackling pressure rattled the Dees, triggering a fumble frenzy and surprising lack of composure from seasoned players.
