CASEY: Rd 01 vs Box Hill

Recommended Posts

• Tomlinson. He played well under constant pressure. A few mistakes but could be considered to replace May.
• Moniz-Wakefield. I like him. Good at the contest. Tackles like he means it. Hope he debuts this year.
• Laurie. Has the skill but seems to be too casual at times. Needs a rocket. Likely end of year delisting.
• Fullarton. Perhaps still settling in.  He’s an athlete and can be handy.
Woewodin.  Nice runner but needs better support. One of the better players today.
• Adams. Still young and raw. 2nd year.  Perhaps ready by 2026
• Jefferson (see Adams)  … but as a first rounder, I am getting worried.
• Tholstrup. I can see why we jumped up spots and gave away 1st and 2nd round combo to get him.  Should debut in 2024.  Good competitive attitude. Likely start as a half forward.
• Schache .  No no no.  Has not developed in 7 years.  Nice bloke but lacks the competitiveness to be a strong key forward.  End of year delisting.
• K. Brown.  No frills. Socks down footballer. I like his heart and scrap.
• Verrall. (See Adams).
• Farris-White.  A punt.  No success here.

Not if they keep him back he wont! Needs an extended run as Key forward and see where he sits at the end of the season. You do know they signed him up till end of 2026 !??

Not the best game I’ve seen.
Strangely, the talls were better at ground level and less fumbly than the smalls, who kept handballing to the ground (or opposition).

Nobody could hit a side of a shed with a pass into the forward line - the amount of kicks that went behind or over leading forwards and straight to the opposition was laughable.

The smaller players did have more marks though.

I agree, AMW is nearly slated in, heard it on the rumour roundabout.

I just didn't see him in the first half, especially when the ball was in the area he was playing.

Given he is possibly one of next ones to be given an opportunity at AFL level, I was expecting much more.

Though, a bad day for many of them.

On that outing and pre-season practice match form, it appears Casey Demons have slipped from being contenders to a re-building phase. Plenty of opportunity for a relatively young list to build resilience, develop their physiques and hone their skills.

Unlike some I won’t be announcing on a very limited sample, that players are not going to reach AFL standard, draft picks have been wasted or an immediate mass cull is in order.

Judging by the migration of posters from threads mostly celebrating the ‘Joie de Vivre’. of recent senior team performances. Out at Casey Fields there are hectares of space for wallowing in the wintry mire of MFCSS. etc

I think for the 90% of picks JT has got right in the last 5-6 years posters can call out the potential bad ones. It doesn’t always have to be roses

I'd be stoked if we can delist Kye Farris White before the mid season draft if it means it frees up a spot for an actual footballer from the bush or suburban who knows how to actually play as a ruckman.

Genuinely one of the worst AFL listed players I've seen since Brendan Van Schaik.

What a waste of a list spot.

I don’t think that delisting him would create a vacancy for the purposes of the mid season draft.

I do agree that on his display today, he doesn’t appear to be up to it.

Remember the loss of 2 list spots - Brayshaw and Smith, and the injuries to Turner, Melksham, Macadam, Bowey and Spargo which means in effect Casey are playing 8 men down...That's a lot of players...

Yeah look I was being half sarcastic especially as he is category B.

You'd think with the potential to step up as a potential back up for Gawn he'd show a bit more grit and determination but I've genuinely never seen a player completely out of his depth at any football level.

I still havent heard what happened tp Bell?

Although the answer could be somewhere in this thread. Apologies if so.

On his day he was the best of any of the listed recruits playing that position at Casey over the last few seasons.

And by a fair margin.  Did he have some off days?  Of course.  But his best was very serviceable and sometimes more than that.

Hopefully just injured and coming back soonish?

I'm surpirsed he survived and made it into this season TBH.

AMW shows a bit but his disposal is not good enough.

Disappointing half by Woewodin, with too many mistakes. He needs to get stronger and cleaner.

Brown is a clever player. But is too small for AFL at the moment.

Jefferson shows no AFL qualities.

Tholstrup does some good things but not enough.

Laurie is a good ordinary VFL player.

Schache played a decent half but doesn’t have the competitive spirit to play as a forward in the AFL.

We should probably just delist them all and start over with a fresh set of 18 y/o kids. Maybe if we put our hand up to move to Tassie we'll get some extra draft picks and some better ones next time.

True. Box Hill were one of the better Victorian teams in the ‘VFL’ last season.

Pick 13 for Tholstrup still remains a question mark for me. Does not seem to be impacting at this level at all

This is a ridiculous take.

Even if you have high expectations, being this critical of an 18 year old after his first VFL match ever is completely insane.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
