The only year it wasn’t rigged was 2021.

Was a free hit cos the lockdown audience would have watched any teams. And they did. No need to get the pies there when everyone is going to watch anyway

The Brayden Maynard act of thuggery with no consequences proved the AFL is purposely "soft" on the bigger Clubs in the AFL.

Anyway, I have already had my rant about it previously and I am not going to get emotional about it anymore.

Let's hope the Melbourne Demons win the 2024 AFL Premiership. That would be the ultimate act of vengeance!

Bring back the No T$ No BS thread and the AFL is losing its little credibility that it has retained.

At least they admit it. Not getting that from AFL House.

Replace NBA with AFL.

Tell me I'm wrong.

You’re wrong.

If you look at data the afl is the healthiest it’s ever been. If we get a bit more qualitative I think there is an under current that is steadily growing that would suggest the game is in a dangerous position.

personally I have stopped watching non Melbourne games because even trying to watch them as a relaxed impartial viewer I get [censored] off with the umpiring.

At no stage in my lifetime has there been less interest outside peoples own clubs than currently. The afl knows how loyal we are, but they need to be careful. I don’t know anyone who isn’t  fed up with the league.

i do wonder how much gambling has had an effect since coming to dominate afl advertising. The nba refereeing issues in the past were closely linked to illegal gambling. I would think the adjudication of our game has been affected by the gambling dollar.

Gambling advertising should be banned as its becoming a cancer to TV viewers. I only watch Friday night games outside of Dees games and most games provide little inspiration to watch.

The quality of media commentary is also putrid compared to other sports.

A lot of the revenue comes from the media, so you could argue the AFL is the Media's [censored].

And the betting agencies.

If you take Qantas and RBA into account, i think the clean up of the AFL should start around 2040

I see the media as largely coming from within the afl. They’re definitely not independent. If you want access you stick to the talking points. They have taken on the modern media style of being ever present regardless of quality of content. Could just be I’m not the target audience but I rarely read or listen to anything worth listening to these days.

can’t help think that they are leaving a huge window open for someone with a brain and some creativity to come in and create all kinds of great content along the lines of long form journalism and more stats based analysis. Most sports leave the afl for dead these days in this regard.

people are going to hate me - more - when i say this, but the best year was 2020 - everyone played each other once

the only bad thing about it was the shortened game lengths

I really liked a lot of the articles the roar put out about the Dees last year.

Definitely more independence and critical thinking.

The mainstream media is more like a drama filled 3 year old just wanting attention

I'm not going to argue that the AFL is totally transparent, trustworthy and not keen on maximising revenue, occasionally by foul means, but mostly fair. However, the paranoia in here is beyond extreme.

  1. Gill doesn't set his salary level - this will almost certainly be set by the Board of the Commission using a number of internal and external benchmarks.
  2. Gill is not incompetent/inept/corrupt. For example, to keep the comp going during COVID-19 was an extraordinary achievement. Anyone who watched his press interviews during that time would have seen a man deprived of sleep and under tremendous pressure. Commercially and financially the comp is in the best condition is living memory.  His management of the huge, self-interested and toxic egos in clubland is extraordinary. The list is long, but we can start with Triple Chins, Kennett and Cochrane. I wouldn't have any of them within 100 metres of my home, let alone pay me enough to work with them.
  3. Regarding the fixture, yes it's mostly %$&*)@, but I've yet to hear practical solutions to all the dilemmas the fixture throws up. Putting a bandaid on one wound simplely creates another wound elsewhere.
  4. Yes, the
  5. The umpiring standards, MOR and score review system is completely %$&*)@ and should be improved - no doubt about that and I cannot defend it.
  6. There is no doubt Goyder is incompetent and should not be the chair of a major sporting competition (let alone an airline) - and I cannot defend that.
  7. And finally, to say the AFL are the most corrupt sporting organization on the planet is beyond extreme. Anyone noticed the BCCI, OIC or FIDA lately? They place the corporate corruption and organisational toxicity and incompetence of the Federal Reserve, Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac, Credit Suisse and Bear Stearns in the veritable shade.

I've stopped watching non-Melbourne games but simply because there is too much football on TV. Thursday nights has tipped me over the edge.

Absolutely agree with everything said here, even point number 4 which clearly has nothing in it which is factually incorrect.

Yeah well said. As well as cutting back on non-Melbourne games, my home became a non-football zone from Tuesday to Thursday. No footy shows, no 360, nothing. Footy pollution was at its worst and I know for others this is a dream but not me.

The issue is that the AFL put profit above everything else, including integrity. The never ending drive to wring the very last buck out of every opportunity is the reason we have a compromised fixture and contorted tribunal findings when it's "stars" are on trial. Had WADA not been involved there's little doubt the Essendon drug saga would have been swept under the rug and it's why they didn't insist on Eddie Maguire's removal from the Collingwood presidency after he compared Adam Goodes to King Kong. Also, I'm not aware of any other sports that slap adverts all over it's goalposts, goal square, ball, centre circle and field of play.

agreed Rab. the chasing of profits over any kind of integrity drives me bonkers.

EG, pies not going to geelong. they played 2x mcg games this year. one of those is in geelong and they probably lose and their % decreases, brisbane finish top. all for the difference in profits of playing at the G instead of GMHBA.

Collingwood never plays at Geelong and Carlton and Essendon rarely venture down to that hell hole.

Essendon went there for the first time in years and it started their downfall in '23. Wont see them down there again.

Melbourne get sent there almost every year so we're carrying those teams not to mention serious injuries to  our key players.

No umpiring academy so the game is umpired by weekend circus clowns.

Goal review cameras basically obsolete junk that Radio Shack wouldnt stock.

VFL scheduling is a mess often with emergency players unable to play at either level.

Players from big clubs protected by the rigged AFL tribunal. Recent examples...Cripps v lions and Maynard in QF. He was never going to be suspended. JVR  May or Pickett would of got 4-6 weeks.

AFL is run by amateurs propped up by their own ilk...the media.

Next year Dillon will be celebrated as a great new administrator.

Tricky Gil should never have restarted AFL season in 2020.

No praise from me.

Crammed 17 rounds into a short period of time with 16 minute quarters and absurd scheduling. Suited older sides like Geelong beautifully. Scott was overcome with joy but still managed to lose GF.

Amateur run comp.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
