North already offered 2 plus 15 and 17 for 1 and 23 and WC said no.

They haven't said no, they just haven't accepted it for the moment.

Equally, there's no rush. They can just sit on all this until draft night.

Equally equally, they're not going to accept that in any case. It's pretty clear that they want 2 single-figure picks, as you would.

Why would West Coast accept an offer now? unless it's 2,3, 15, 17, 18 for pick 1 they are just going to wait and see the best offers with a clear idea of who will slide to where and what they might actually get out of the package.

Very good source told me WC are trying to turn pick 1 into 3 top 10 picks. Also told me that the stories about WC are wanting the WA tall are a tad embellished.

The stumbling block is North Melbourne. they want Pick 1 and to keep 2 or 3 so they get either the better Tassie mid or Duursma.

My guess is that it could look something like below…. Which is 3 inside top 11. There would be some additional bits and pieces thrown in to balance it out.

WC 3, 8 + 11

North 1

MFC 2

Geelong 6

Personally if that were to eventuate or something similar I would be ok with it.

Nth aren’t giving up 2 and 3 for 1

Pretty sure I mentioned that.

Just saying that WC were telling clubs that’s what they wanted.

What?

  1. If Reid was available for F8, F9 and F10, I'd definitely take Reid
  2. I'd love to see the evidence for all the conclusions you've drawn in paragraph two.

They were facts as I was there working for the MFC at the time and was informed of the information from Ray Jordan who was Barassi's right hand man unfortunately Richard was unaware that Ray was out recruiting players. This secret died with all of them.

Yes, they said "no" to that offer.

I haven't kept up with draft changes for a while, but the below seems to indicate that this is not the case (?)

"The Selections Only trade window opens on Monday, October 23 at 9am AEDT, and closes on Friday, November 10, at 5pm.

A brief window will also open prior to the second round of the National Draft (Tuesday, November 21) from 5:45pm to 6:30pm."

You need the salary cap space and the players wanting to join to get Rankine and Dawson, purely on picks it’s not nearly as good a deal, especially when they asked for a North second rounder back as well which would’ve cancelled the Dawson pick.

If we could swap 11 and a future first (providing we play finals which is far from a guarantee) for eagles 2nd or even 3rd rounders suddenly we aren’t giving up nearly as much in that part of the trade.

If 11 and a future first got us some high profile trades in then I’d say let’s use them for mature star players, but we just had our 3rd trade period without bringing in any quality so we are either cash strapped and/or far from a destination club.

Looking at our list build our best pathway to bringing in stars is the draft and particularly the top 5 or so picks.

Trade is not always about Clubs getting the biggest stars and please tell me who got any A graders in this years trade period.

it’s about improving your list, patching up holes and also creating depth.

North? Bombers ? Blues? Pies? Swans? Not any there on 2023 form. Some had 4 goes at it.!

Adams McKay Grundy Hollands and Doedee are possibly the pick. Some are paid overs like Petts would have been at his stage of  development a little like many Dees fans have accused us getting May and Lever. ( I don’t agree as we have won a flag and our defence keeps on giving us that opportunity each year) Tom Lynch and Jeremy Cameron are also prime examples of successful trading.  They are ahead of most in recent times although Tigers have Taranto and Hopper which may prove worth their deals in time. Of course Hawks boosted their team in their last years of their dynasty. No draft selections of any worth are often a result. We are lapping it up with 6 and 11 due to Jackson leaving.

So in the last years it’s been lean pickings on the numbers of elite players when you consider the numbers.

Quite rightly we have traded for strengthening our weaknesses and for depth. Grundy aside has not worked and Schache was mishandled by our Coach after a curious Sub selection He might have been a hero replacing Tmac for all we know.

Your statement about our lack of stars is correct in standards but you have to look at what we are replacing and what bus available. To say we are not a destination Club is also curious.

Two players from interstate have stated their intention to want to come and since Goody has been here we have recruited Vince Langdon Lewis May Lever BBB Hunter Cross Schache McAdam Fullarton Grundy Melsham Hibberd Billing’s. That’s 15 and you need to check a few in the same time of 7/8 years for other Clubs.

Five are premiership players, Four AA and others are valuable contributors to our development of our culture and depth. And this years 3 who knows how they will be judged.

Probably the most valuable and impactful recruiting in a single year May have been the Pies four of 2023 of McStay Mitchell, Hill and Frampton. But that is the exception rather than the rule and no top 30 player is there as you indicated you wanted.

Given they knocked our offer back and we don't have much more to offer them, l would say they are hoping for norf to do more.  Both clubs should hold firm and let them stew on it further.

Melbourne to North: 6 + 11 for 2

North to Geelong: 15, 17 for 8

North to WC: 3, 8, 11 for 1

North turn 2, 3, 15, 17 in to 1 and 6.

Maybe a future 2nd from Eagles to Geelong for a later cats pick? I’m sure they’d be 100 other picks involved.

Why would North do that, may as well trade 15, 17 and 18 for 8 and offer West Coast 2 and 8 for 1 and keep 1 and 3 or keep 2,3 and 8

And deal that doesn’t get North 1 doesn’t get them Reid. North have had a stack of picks and young talent, they’re in the perfect position to really go hard for pick 1.

And so far it seems the Eagles won’t accept 2 and the late picks, they might not accept 2 and 8.

Dealing with Melb and North simultaneously is how the Eagles get three picks inside 11.

Maybe we are forcing Norths hand by doing so?

I'm not sure to what end but our offer means that they will have to pay up. to get P1

...or not pay up and keep 2 and 3

For all our speculation, the top 10 draft order may not change beyond bid matching

We’re not getting pick 1.. it’s just not going to happen.

WC don’t want to take a risk on Reid and they believe curtin is the next best player. They’ll get him at 6 and then get dees next 2 first rounders.
If I were WC this scenario would have to be considered

Not true, yet! If north wants  to up their offer then they’re paying overs 💯

As it stands our offer is superior! Over to the Roos it is.

Just flinging the thought around - how would the likes of Duursma and McKercher compare to pick 1s of past seasons? How strong would the pick 1 hype be if there was no Reid? (nevermind the gold coast academy kids)

If 6, 11 and a future first is what we've put forward for 1, would we put forward 6 and 11 for, say, pick 3, guaranteeing one of those two players?

I think the talk of us taking Sanders with 6 stimulated me because as good as he is, he is not the missing ingredient in our midfield, while Duursma and particularly McKercher looks like exactly it.

Don’t think I’ve seen it mentioned here, and I’m not saying it’s my opinion, but I remember someone saying that we might try to trade up, to get ahead of the Watson pick, so we can draft him.

Walter would go pick 1, Duursma v McKercher would be roughly on par with Rayner v Andy Brayshaw in 2017 I think. McKercher a solid midfield prospect, Duursma the could be anything type but not a guarantee.

Better than McGrath/Taranto, not as good as Walsh/Luko/Rankine or Rowell/Anderson.

Good enough to trade plenty for but North aren’t moving back unless it’s part of a pick 1 deal.

Pick 2 alone is worth our two picks this year, and given next years pick will likely be the same as either one of Norths extra picks, they're ahead of us on value by a long way.

Especially considering whoever their target is besides Reid, they'll be able to get them guaranteed with the North deal.

Ours is a strong offer, but theirs is significantly better

Pick 2 is better than 6 and 11 is laughable. Most clubs will take 2 top 10 picks over 1

Most on here have had the chance to consider this for a while now. Each year is different but as the years roll by, we make more informed decisions and our team are at least as good it seems as the top 4 or 5. This year we dont need pretty good players, we need a gun to top up with. I'd hope we would swap 6 and 11 for 2 if we had the opportunity.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
