Latest intel: The Demons were hoping to turn big moves into an even bigger move, landing two top-11 picks via trade period swaps, and offering their selections to West Coast in a move for Pick 1. They’re at the back of the queue for that trade though and it appears unlikely to occur. If there is a trade involving the Dees, it could be the other way, if the Eagles want to move for a sliding Daniel Curtin. If the Demons stick where they are, they should still nab two very good players, with Caleb Windsor surging up the board and into their thinking at No.6 along with Nate Caddy. With their second pick they’ve been closely linked to Koltyn Tholstrup, after visiting the forward at his Esperance home, while Curtin, Caddy, Darcy Wilson and Ollie Murphy would be considered if they fall this far. Father-son Kynan Brown could be a late selection.

 

Best-case scenarios: One of Zane Duursma, Nick Watson or Ryley Sanders slides to their first pick, or they find a way to move up from Pick 11 and get two top-10 selections. Or if they hold Pick 11, one of Connor O’Sullivan, Nate Caddy, James Leake or, dare we say it, Daniel Curtin slips through.

 

Worst-case scenario: Hard to see anything here for the Dees, considering they’ll likely take just two or three players and would be very happy to take Koltyn Tholstrup with their second pick should they hold their current selections

It’s likely to be traded out for a future 2024 2nd or 3rd round.  I’d be speaking with the Power. They’d like a draft pick around this late second round. A future 2nd rd pick off them is reasonable.  
(Read somewhere that Dees might try to use “42” to get us a future 3rd off from Saints / around pick 50-52 in next years draft after academy and fathers sons. Thats a bad deal).

Why Watson? Small one position forward pocket type. We have Kozzzy.  We need players like Sanders, Duursma, Leake, O’Sullivan, Curtin, Windsor, Caddy … all ahead of Watson in my view.

Nah I thInk he has more dimensions that that. I think they see him further up the ground as a connector.  
 

That’s why I query whether we take Kolstrup if we snagged  Watson as Kolstrup appears strong as a high half forward delivering it in

I wonder if the Cats would consider 11 plus our future first to move up to 8? 

if so a combination of Windsor and Leake/Caddy/O'Sullivan/Curtin looks pretty good.

Giving up way too much just to move 3 spots?

I can guarantee one of those guys will still be available at our pick as a slider

Nik Nat has flown in to Melbourne to present his jumper number to a WC draftee, presumably Reid.

If that is the case, game, set and match.

That would still leave live trading for other picks.

It is believed WC will try and get Curtin through pick trading.

Curtin should be there at 6.

We are seeing a late knock on Curtin, is that WC disinformation?

If they offer us their F1 for 6, do we pass on Curtin, Windsor or whoever and take that F1 to use next year, either as a selection or trade ammunition?

If WC rise a few spots, we could lose a player’s development for a year for a not too much better pick.

I think WC are that desperate for Curtin they would consider throwing in 23 and you could bundle that and 42 to get a pick in the teens and could grab someone like maybe Moir or Murphy or whoever.

Don’t jump all over me, I am just raising another discussion point.

What are the thoughts?

On the BigFooty rumour thread that WC are putting their pick 23 on the table along with future first to try and Curtin before Crows make a move. 
We would surely have to consider it?! Use our own future first and their second rounder to get Swans pick?!

Although all the mail seems to suggest we will take Windsor and Tholstrup at our current picks.

Think the highlighted bit would be on offer to us if we wanted to do the deal. 

I don't think WCE including pick 23 is relevant for us, we traded away our mid 20s pick for a minor pick upgrade so we can't rate the later picks highly 

I still think we're insane not to make a play for West Coast's future 1st round pick. Particularly if the alternative is that we take Windsor or Watson.

 

I think we'd be fools to select half forwards when elite mids and key position players are at the top of this draft. Shocked to see Curtain slide so much, just don't see it happening in real time.

I think the Curtin stuff is all smoke and mirrors. Even if he ‘only’ turns into a 3rd intercepting defender it’s a more important role than people remember come draft time. 

We gave up plenty for Lever and he’s very stop start with ball, prone to bizarre brain fades and yet still highly regarded.

Understand that, but that was because we had 6.

The real question is do we rate WC F1 highly enough to lose the player we want at 6.

Then also possibly get 23, which with our 42, should get an improved pick for the 2nd player we would be taking.

I am not saying 23 is the prize, it is the cream on F1, if we like that cake.

If Curtin is there at 6, I assume we would get the WC call.

So the decision would need to be made, to take who we want, or lose that selection for at least WC F1 and possibly 23 as well.

I don't think WC would baulk at F1 and 23 to ensure Curtin.

We would then have 11 as our first selection and maybe a teens selection next with F1 for next year as a gold selection to use or trade to get a top player.

That could really enhance the Jackson trade reward for us.

Because it’s more than just ticking a box as having enough of the requisite “smalls”

I think of watson as the Papley of the draft. But Watson is shorter, and the highest goal kicking player in the draft by lightyears. Hence he would likely be the most dangerous goal kicking small if his form holds up (and there is no reason to think it won't, hence why hawthorn or dogs likely to pick him). 

We are still in the premiership window.

If we trade into next year's draft or pick a tall who needs a few years to hit their straps, we'll be losing a year or two of development.

Against that background, I can't see us trading with WCE, either to slide back or out of the 1st round entirely.

Can absolutely see us throwing everything at a player who we consider might give us an edge next year.  And that would be the right call. 

Don't listen to the nuffies saying we're giving up too much. List spots are tight everywhere but particularly for us.  We're not even going to use 42, and if we had more second rounders, we also wouldn't use them.

Picks later in the draft are worth a lot less, particularly given how COVID has affected ddevelopment of this group making it even more of a [censored] shoot than usual. 

Adelaide, Essendon, Bulldogs, West Coast are all looking to get forward into the top 12 or so, at the cost of F1s, and Syd have said they think there is a group of 12 clear of the rest. 

That's a strong indication that JT and his team have been right on the money.

I imagine if we draft Watson, he'll play more as a dedicated small forward, Kosi would get more midfield time, and McAdam would be more a small marking forward in the mould of Jamie Elliot. 

McAdam seems a stronger marking option than Kozzie and Watson, so not sure he's in the same boat. Might be seen as an upgrade on Spargo, rather than playing the same role as the other two.

I’d think long and hard about Charlie Edwards over Tholstrup if we went Watson. Assuming there’s very little difference in their rankings. Darcy Wilson and DeMattia too.

But it depends if they think Tholstrup is a midfielder and can add more run and carry in his game.

No doubt @Ethan Tremblay will be dropping his much anticipated phantom draft in just under 12 hours 😆

Curtin sliding to 10 would be bonkers. He's already better performed and has more potential than a few others shown their above him there. Strange times!
