Theyre turning out to be more trouble than theyre worth. As soon as they become established players their home town clubs start sniffing around and hiding in trees outside his house tossing bags of sweets over the fence.

MFC should never deal with those slimey Crows and Flogmantle knobs.

 

Well fortunately JT and TL will completely disregard this expectedly overreaction as is posted always when a LJ effect is experienced. 

If we had taken your advice we wouldn’t have May Lever Rivers Kossie Nibbler Sparrow Harry P JVR Fullarton McAdam Lingers in our team and certainly no flag. Your posts would be why aren’t we choosing the best available as we are not making Finals etc. 

So it’s wise to be careful what you wish for with your wildly irrational responses to what the Club should do and don’t. 

I am sure from memory you are not a Victorian indeed may be living overseas so I suppose the Irish girls/guys are taboo as well!

    Some players who are from Tassie will to return to the Apple Isle just to be close to family and friends but others will not because the club will be a whipping boy like GWS, GC and the Bears.

    Even though I know that my thoughts are irrelevant in the overall scheme of things I am stressing about handing O’Sullivan / Caddy to the opposition knowing that they could have been ours.lol.!!!

    Is a kid originally from Launceston with all his school mates and Sandy Dragons mates in Melbourne really going to be significantly more likely to move to Hobart than any other player?

    Id say the odds are in favour of him staying.

    Same goes for Curtin.

    I’d only overlook guys who don’t want to move to begin with. Sanders isn’t even moving!

    We may lose a player to ‘home’, but there would be compo or trade value in the move.  We should be able to cover any I player, and the capital return could even be positive for us.

    Was recently chatting to a former Tassie premier about the team and its prospects.

    They said that the team was effectively no chance to be in place on current timelines. Horrible contracts for Tas government re: stadium build (unviable based on current contract) and ongoing fees to AFL, not enough fed money, variable support from sections of the public who believe the money could be spent elsewhere and only vague backing from the AFL (unlike the northern franchises) who want to look like they are supporting a Tassie team. The opposition (who are the same colour as the fed government that provided funding) have said they will scrap plans and will only go ahead with establishment if contracts are renegotiated.

    The path ahead is littered with significant obstacles. I don't think we should be tailoring our recruiting based on the framework of the plan for commencing establishment of a Tassie team sometime in the future.

    Let me say up front,  I'd be very happy to get either Sanders or Curtin in this draft. But history tells us the main reason a first 22 players leaves is the 'go home' factor. You see it every year. It is definitely a higher risk. If we were to be 'well compensated' by the AFL when it happens, it means we finished near bottom that year. Clubs rarely get true trade value when dealing with each other in these cases. 

    This factor is the only reason WCE are open to letting the #1 pick go. It's also why I hope we can get it. I wouldn't want to give up 3 × Ist rounders for Reid if he wasn't Victorian.

    JT & Co. won't be picking for any specific need I don't believe, as we don't really have a specific need right at this very moment.

    They will follow the Keep It Simple Stupid mantra and take best available, based on where they rank players.

    We also won't be swayed by the 'go home' factor, as we have seen time and time again and rightly so. If you aren't backing in your system and club to hold these players then you may as well just give up now. Not saying all will stay, but if you hold on to the majority then it's still a win.

    Draft picks after trade period: 6, 11, 42, 93

    Melbourne has moved their pick 14 to pick 11 during the trade period, giving the club two of the first dozen selections heading into November. The club is considering making a play for pick 1, having shown interest in Harley Reid. However, other clubs are better placed to twist West Coast's arm. If it holds pick 6, Melbourne could consider mid-sized marking forward Nate Caddy, gun onballer Ryley Sanders, hard-running wingman Darcy Wilson, and key defender Ollie Murphy. The Demons also have access to father-son Kynan Brown, a potential late selection.

    If that were the case I’d take Sanders at 6 and see if we got lucky with one club taking a Smokey and possibly O’Sullivan being there at 11.

    It's funny I hear people mention our players getting on and I think out of the top 4-5 teams this year we had a pretty decent amount under 30.

    Pies had Pendlebury, Sidebottom, Mitchell, Crisp, Howe, Cox, Hoskin-Elliott & Jamie Elliott all 30+.

    In our team v Collingwood we had May, Gawn, Tom McDonald & Hibberd.

    Up till now, Lamb has stated that we will go to the draft with 2 picks. However with the delisting today of Kye Turner one has to ask  "Has there been a change in plan"?

    Under the 2-pick strategy we trade 2, 11 and something for 1 or 3 and use 42 for Brown giving 2 selections. Is this a signal that now we will go with 6, 11 and 42 adding 3 to the list?

    collingwood: 28yr 1 month, 150.2 games

    melbourne: 26yr 5 months. 124.7 games

    Cats pick 8 will probably need to be traded out if they are hoping to pick 4/5 picks. If we can’t move up from 6 wonder will we try to improve from 11 to 8.

    Once Gold Coast select all their academy players, plus Hawks and Dogs take their F/S options pick 42 may come into a pick in the mid 30s. You would think that may interest Geelong if they want to be taking multiple players at the draft.

    They currently have picks 8, 25, 76, 87 & 94.

One of the problems the Demons have these days is that they rarely have the luxury of true home ground advantage, something they have enjoyed just once since mid April.

      From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

    • CASEY: Gold Coast

      Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

    • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

      The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
