Judd McVee named 4th on Zero Hanger's Rookie of the Year

Featured Replies

McVee has a brilliant year to many he came out of nowhere to play every game. He is being recognised outside the club as his 4th indicates. Another example of our excellent recruiting when you consider he was a real "rookie" not selected in the main draft like the eventual winner Sheezel from North or runner up like Ashcroft.

Good to see him being recognised. He as a first year player has played on some of the leagues most dangerous small forwards and held his own or beaten them, uses the ball and is calm under the most pressure.
The others have had good years and they are good players but Judd is a freakin gem!

He has been amazing, and I know he's not a mid but damn I reckon he'd be a dark horse in the rising star race (probably won't get it but definitely would be deserving).

Absolute gun, played every game and been excellent!

Good on him, we hear about all the young kids at other clubs and how good they are, but the commentators never praise our boys.

I'm sick of the praise heaped on Hawthorn youngsters, it's harder to break into a top club and hold your position than it is to get a game in a [censored] club like Hawthorn.

He's had a very solid year McVee, glad he's getting some recognition. Has fitted seamlessly into our backline and is doing some ridiculous stuff for a rookie in our second year.

Some very impressive kids this year as well.

Sheezel, Ashcroft, Owens, Amiss, Humphrey, Wilmot, JvR, Callaghan, Ginbey, Michaelanny, Weddle, Phillipou, Fletcher, Andrew among others

So, who was third?

Max Michalanney.

Strangely, McVee didn't actually show up on their weekly top 8 rookie rankings until Round 17. I dare say they realised the oversight and went back through his performances over the entire season. Shows just how much he flew under the radar in wider footy circles.

Just as many supporters of clubs other than ours probably have no idea who Judd McVee is, I confess I have no knowledge of Max Michalanney. I don't believe I've ever heard his name before in any context.

He would have to be close to a walk on start at any club in the league, hoping his 2nd year is as good as his first.

He actually been really good for the Crows but I would have McVee slightly ahead.

I feel like he's a player who will clock up a whole lot of '4ths'.

4th in a Rising Star award, a collection of 4ths in Best and Fairests, a 4th Premiership medal, all that kind of thing.

Still hard to believe that he made it this year from struggling Casey player to important small lock down defender with silky skills.

A testament to the player but also says a lot about the coaching/development and recruitment team.

Agree. Huge talent out of last years draft. Super draft in my view !!!

I like him more and more. He is a self-driven, reliable and quite achiever.

Would you say he is a ‘quiet quite the achiever’ or a ‘quite the quiet achiever?

Haha EO, that's my mistake. 'quite' and 'quiet', 'tried' and 'tired'... they are all sort of like twins in front of my eyes, I'd often misjudged them.

Good Matrix-dodge on the there-their-they're trap, though!

McVee - the silent executioner. He will probably stay under the radar earning widespread awe and acclaim from the footballing community.

I’ve heard of them but mainly due to SuperCoach.

So calm under pressure, its extraordinary for someone of his age to be so chill in a game.

Don’t forget his grandpa who spent the summer with him refining his running technique.  Huge kudos to him too

What a pick the lad has been good in the air, good in trafic, clean pick ups off the ground, can run till the cows come home with some toe and a piercing kick out of D 50.

Magnifique.

  • REPORT: Carlton

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: “Is Melbourne even at the ground?” Moments later, as Carlton’s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demons’ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.
