Can I just say wowza on this Petty performance! That was some kind of performance.

Some of his contested marking was absolutely nuts and then his ability to provide pressure when the ball hits the ground is first class.

I mean realistically take your pick between Petty and JVR

Have we potentially just saved huge cap space in going out and buying a marquee forward?? I think so now!

I love the mongrel he brings to the forward line. Even if he is having a quiet day, it will help keep the defenders honest.

It’s his to lose now (given Brown’s body troubles), great performance.

Tomlinson needs to stay in the backline (Lever and May need a third defender) and Smith needs to play the third tall forward role full-time. Too often Richmond intercepted our forward entries because we were well outnumbered.

For the first time of the year. I feel we can actually win the flag due to Petty up forward.

The Tomlinson for Smith sub was critical because of the agility Smith gave us. I don't want to lose that given we're now conceding so many scores.

Had decent oppo on him too. I’ve long advocated for petty as a forward. Him and JVR are the future key forward structure 100%.

Petty's performance today reminded me of Tmac against the Eagles back in 2017.  It was the game where announced himself as a genuine key forward. I wouldn't be surprised if Petty has a 50+ goal season in 2024, just like Tmac did in 2018.

Insanely premature to make this call off the back of one game, particularly given he’s struggled (IMO) previously.

He's got a bit of mongrel - giving the crowd and the Richmond players a bit of lip. Hates to lose.

Love it.

Agree!

Playing on a very good premiership defender in Balta mind you..

Balta is a strong player too. I really rate him, particularly one on one.

I loved in the second quarter when Harry ran straight at the kicker a couple of times and it created space all around him. In wasn’t just his obvious strong marking, it was his leading with pace that really impressed.

Petty reads the ball flight so well.

Interested to see who goes out for Fritch when fit. can’t be a small, and Melksham is playing some influential footy.

He reminded me of Neita today, clean grabs and kicking was elite. And JVR is developing nicely, imagine if he took that speccie.

Tomlinson had his struggles today but I would give him another chance next week.

Marquee forwards are nearly impossible to land and cost a fortune, the idea we could pluck one to begin with is hard.

That said, I’m not turning down Jezza Cameron or Lynch on below market money because of one amazing Petty game.

But unless that happens we should aim for another quality swing man or good depth talls with scope for both ends.

Petty and JVR have at least provided reason not to panic and pay massive overs for questionable players.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
