I think it's just a thing that pops up now and then. Last night darcy on c7 was very much pro saints.

In 21 we were the Media's darling so...

AFL plays out like a greek tragedy and last night 80% of that was St Kilda.  I understand their job is to make it interesting? right to the final bell etc (BT saying the Dogs are still in it vs the pies).  To quote a student of the game (my son, expeletives deleted)

Kath Loughnan on fox legit just said, "and we haven't even mentioned Petracca"

They even admit it.

It’s all about Daicos.

Last nights commentary was pathetic. All they kept going on about is what a memorable win for St Kilda if they could win it.

I find it very stressful to watch on TV or listen to radio coverage, much more so than at the game. However, with the sound off, it’s weirdly less stressful. If they could give an option for just the crowd noise, it’d be perfect for me.

I would love nothing more than this. I wish Kayo had that as an option. Even if just to flick back and forth to the commentary if you need the insight of what you’re seeing.

Some of the cricket commentary has been excellent, particularly when they shut up!

Last night the work experience kid had a shot at directing the footy, could they please show what is going on on the ground at all times. If they insist on showing a close-up of someone's ear or ankle or Ross Lyon ordering pizza use a little box at the bottom of the screen! Surely they must know by now that we all have massive TV'S. I can happily watch two sports at once! (not when it's raining in England - NB Sunny in France)

And another rant, STOP PLAYING WITH THE LIGHT SWITCH! What moron thinks that improves the experience?

Oh, great win, go deees!

No. I’d just settle for media that is professional and even.

With all due respects @demosaw, thinking, or even believing, that that is even remotely possible is deluded.

  • do governments act with integrity?
  • will economic and social inequity ever cease?
  • will the media ever act professionally and even?

A suggestion, FWIW, you'll find the freedom you seek in accepting the unacceptable.

Like many I’m sick of the anti-Melbourne media bias in commentary and analysis. We’ve all seen open Barracking against us, reopening and poking of wounds, delight in our misfortune, misinformation, malice and mischief.

Rather than complain which will just make it worse, I’m thinking as a club we need to play the long game and groom select/interested current and recent AFL/AFLW past players/assistants for media roles with a Media College.

Learning would be theoretical and practical and would cover traditional media and new media, marketing, entrepreneurship, management, PR.

Could be delivered with a mix of current and latent club contacts through supports and sponsors, in partnership with a university so delivers a choice of formal qualification.

In years to come we will gradually redress the balance by having more engaging and informed comment and entertainment coming from those who are, know, love and protect demons.

Don’t get angry get even. Could we do this?

Sorry mate but really who cares, I just turn it down if they annoy me, don't need to listen to their rubbish.

I actually have a skill (maybe even a super power), that I can have the sound on and mentally tune out the commentary until the good Melbourne bits....also helps if your a bit deaf like me.

And speaking of "what gets on my goat". The term "territory" JB's favourite go to annoys the carp out of me.

Well, it certainly doesn’t read that way when you’re suggesting that a media college is established for Melb ex players and staff to redress the balance and protect the club. To me it reads that you’re wanting to see some sort of positive discrimination put in place, which, I highly doubt would ever work where sporting commentary is concerned… even my favourite commentator, Hudson, has a very obvious bias towards Geelong; but I accept that they will all have their favourites.

I think you will find if you look carefully the AFL players comprises a couple of Daicos, a guy who used to play junior basketball and some other players.

The competition is made up of Pies, Cats, Tigers, Dons and some other teams.

I think this need to be taken into account when understanding the emotional context it creates for supporters, particularly during our games.

Last night was the first game I’d been to since Queens Birthday. I really enjoyed it, and greatly admired the effort and discipline of both teams players.

I see the game really purely at the ground - meaning it’s not seen through the lens of someone whose barracking for another team, or whose employer sees more benefit in the other team winning. I saw the saints trying really hard and being fully committed, and I saw us rise to it and be cleaner, more skilful and more level headed.

I just get annoyed watching the TV. We aren’t sexy and glamorous, we are disciplined and structured and organised. That’s not what TV wants, and so it works against us, and impacts our experiences and expectations.

This is a terrific post. I watched it live too, and thought we completely controlled the play and it was a tough contest. Got home and watched the replay and it was like watching an entirely different game, due to the narrative created by the commentators.

one thing I like about Premier ALeague Football is that the game is just called play by play, with very little bias and hyperbole- the same can’t be said for our game any longer.

The barracking is painful to listen to but what kills me is the complete lack of professionalism from key callers, with Brian Taylor the main offender.  He doesn’t know the players, makes outrageous calls on injuries and struggles with the rules.  And he ain’t funny.  I’d much rather a professional commentator like Nicholson or Bennett than listen to that fat [censored].

I have that same superpower Spurs! It's marvelous to be able to tune out of the commentary. I just hear the names of the players amongst the waffle. Every now and again something particularly irritating uttered by the clowns manages to slip through the force field though.

The only thing that will shut them up / embarrass them is for us to win big games and in particular GFs - then, even if they continue to criticise IDGAD.

It was annoying listening to Darcy barrack for the Saints last night but he's still salty because we brutalised his beloved doggies in the 21GF. Very transparent.

I was snarkey about Darcy's barracking too but I don't think it had anything to do with us making amends for 1954 (with interest).

It was solely about what would have been a great talking point had the Saints been able to win against the odds. The problem was, talking about it before it happens puts it in the if-your-aunty-had-balls-she'd-be-your-uncle category.

Seems the fool can only handle one idea at a time and worked it over and over.

After 10+ years in the game, it’s surprising how every time Ben Brown takes a shot at goal BT and JB have to ridicule his run-up and make a cricket reference. [censored] me to tears

But do you find yourself counting his steps? I've had to force myself to stop. Got all the way to 27 one time, 26 another...there's no single result.

I don't think he has a grudge either and I think he's not too bad at being impartial (With maybe just a little extra excitement in Doggies games).

I just think he's bang average as a caller, his timing and cadence is all wrong like an off-beat marching band and his vocal register isn't suited for the job, others can make the high pitch thing work but his voice just goes up to this comedic pitch.

I don't mind Nicholson though.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
