We are desperate for two big key forwards, Players similar to Cameron and King.

An apprentice ruckman would be handy as well.

Not sure about Jefferson Airplane just yet.

Don't really need another on baller.

If it were me i'm going HARD at Ben King, who i think we could definitely get with one of our world famous presentations and we have the draft assets to get it done, unsure on the cap side of things.

if not, geez pick 1 would be tempting, especially given 2 of the picks we're offering would likely be late teens. something like 6, 18 and 18 so Harley Read can come in and win a flag in his first year and develop without the pressure in a strong team that won't rely on him the way the Hawks would

I don’t think Lamb and Taylor are trying to get ‘ND1’ - they are trying to get this specific kid.

Just like what they did to get up the order and get Oliver and Pickett.

Mate he's a lock for pick up 1 then its bit of daylight for the next pick unless someone else completely blows him put of te Park.

They're absolutely wanting to get pick 1 specifically for Reid only and that's what he's worth.

A strawmans argument  Jack

Only Collingwood was ever going to get Daicos

But you’re missing the point bub. The question is about the worth of the player not which club was ever going to get him.

Daicos was the real standout #1 player in that draft and an equivalent to the Harley Reid of 2023.

This.

Daicos is in his second season and is leading many awards and a Brownlow favourite. He’s one of the factors behind Collingwood’s rise from 17th to flag favourite.

There are no guarantees with recruiting but the addition of a player of that calibre could be enormous over a long term, especially when added to an already quality list.

Mate, you missed my point; some posters are alluding to pick 3 being just as good as pick 1 but Lamb and Taylor don’t seem to think like that - they go up the draft to get a specific player ie. Oliver and Pickett.

True but there’s a good chance that this year’s specific player is Harley Reid. A lot of good judges think that if he had been available for last year’s draft, he might have been taken with pick 1.

Zane Duursma is the player that I’m really hoping the Dees can land. Probably need pick 3 or 4 to get him.  Excellent skills. Kicks equally on left and right.  Good pace. Balanced. Can play inside but predominantly outside elite ball user.  Loves a goal.

If it's not Harley Reid, it's most likely Zane Duursma.

I am not arguing the opposite of that either…

I feel like the German management that were talking to Homer after they bought the Nuclear Power Plant.

I am just saying that we identify the talent we want and if we have to mortgage next year - we will do it. If we have to bundle picks to get up the order - we will do it. If we have to pay overs to get the first pick to get this kid - we may well just do that too.

We will do this, that, and the other thing!

We were not in the position we are now

And this is what it comes down to.

We don't need to stock pile good players. We already have a list full of good players, some of whom can't even get a game!

We need A++ talent to help extend our premiership window and sit alongside Clarry and Trac.

3 good 1st round draft picks will be fine, but will they make us a premiership threat in 2026 and 2027? Unlikely.

Yes we actually do. Viney isn't getting any younger, and beyond Clarry and Trac we don't have another A+ grade midfielder waiting in the wings. We've invested heavily in talls in recent years, both in terms of drafting and trading.

We absolutely need to start refreshing the midfield now.

Neither Tracc nor Oliver were No 1 picks. ……

Trac should have been. Ask St Kilda.

Oliver had his issues re: his body, and yes we got incredibly lucky to land him at 4.

Being pick 1 isn't always a guarantee that you'll be the best player, we know that better than most. But if Jason Taylor wants pick 1 because he believes player X is the best of the lot by a long margin, then pick 1 is what we should try to get.

I just can't get into trade/draft talk this early in the season, particularly as we still have games, finals and a premiership to be won.  It all just seems very premature.

It's rare there's such a clear number 1 pick. Look at what Daicos has done for Collingwood. Without him they don't beat St.Kilda or Essendon. If we could get Reid to our HBF next year and he turns out as well as expected could you imagine how much better we'd be. Pick up Sam Van Rooyen down the order and away we go. Elite talent keeps you at the top, it's that simple.

Does that mean we end up in the land of chocolate?

Well.. the Brains Trust has hardly faulted.

He must be bloody good....and will want to be.  History suggests the strike rate on these "gems" is low.

We need to get this draft and next right... not getting much of a look in for years after.

I'll park my thoughts/concerns and get back to reality.

I usually have the attitude of a pick in the top 3 being just as good but not all no.1's are created equal and by all accounts this kid is streets ahead of everyone else right now. If Taylor and co think he's the real deal then buy up big.

Until recently, clubs talking to player targets in season was an AFL no no.  Against the spirit of that, this year the AFL has this new weekly program specifically to talk player trades and contracts.

It is the AFL laying the ground work to introduce mid-season player trade.

Yes, I'm a cynic when it comes to the AFL.

another Dusty? there is only one Dusty

Cam Raynor was meant to be the next Dusty. they all sound amazing before they are drafted and then you potentially get a David Swallow or Raynor.

tread carefully MFC

Rayner is still proving handy. Recently hyped draftees like the aforementioned Daicos and Ashcroft have also entered the league as advertised. You can find examples to suit either argument.

Some prospects are less speculative than others. What I’ve seen of Reid gives me a high degree of confidence that he’ll be a very good player. We had a big throw at the stumps for Humphrey and/or Phillipou and Reid had both covered last year.

I trust Taylor and Lamb. They have the runs on the board.

5 +18 +18 would be a steal for pick 1

If they think Reid is A+++ and worth 3 x first rounders, I'm all for it. We still have Freo's 2nd (23-25) and our 2nd (32-36).

If Kynan Brown is seen as a pick around 22-25, I'd like us to swap both the 2nds this year to move inside that.

In: Reid + pick 20 + Kynan Brown

Out: 2023 picks 5, 18, 24, 35, 3rd+4th (for Brown), 2024 pick 17 or 18

Delicious!!!

*Estimated pick order, obviously

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.

  • NON-MFC: Round 09

Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?
