I really don't understand why interstate teams don't favour draft players from their state.

You completely eliminate go home factor and make it extremely hard for other players to poach your lads.

The same logic could be applied in reverse.

I'm guessing the standard recruiters lines would go something like:

"Picking the best available at that pick"

"We really rated such and such, so that's why we selected them at that pick"

 

I think it somewhat is a credit to Taylor and Co's credit that we are able to select these diamonds in the rough with late picks and then our development guys and team culture to turn them into solid players.

I'm guessing that if the selectors thought it was a really line ball decision or a player had a really strong go home factor about them (Nick Nat / Watts), them maybe that might sway them to pick the home grown tallent.  Otherwise, I think Jason Taylor did sum it up recently in a Demonland interview that for every player that does go home, a bunch stay and you can't generally let it influence the player selection.  We've also been on the receiving end of a couple of super star come home to Vic's in Linngers and Lever,  so I think it's swings and round abouts to a fair extent.

It does swing in roundabouts but I look at the Crows/Power and now Eagles in their rebuild, it's insane how much good SA talent is there that they could've picked up themselves. 

I'd also like to preemptively thank Claremont, as well as Fremantle for their first pick in the 2023 draft...

Curtin has been a top performer at representative level over the last two years, shining for Western Australia’s Under 17 side and in the recent Futures showcase. He was best afield in the latter game, displaying his poise in possession and sound intercept marking down back. With the potential to swing forward, there’s plenty to like.

But hang on, we can't draft Western Australians can we? That's very risky.

Because they draft who they want then get the others via go home factor a year or two later (Horne-Francis, Rankine, Jackson etc)

Was waiting for someone to say this. Made me laugh every time it came up before the drafts. And there's every chance we lose one of our current sandgropers, maybe even Rivers soon, which if it happens is totally fine. Keep drafting the best talent and backing in our development.

If cricket is any kind of guide then WA is only behind NSW for the deepest pool of sporting talent and that gap seems to be shrinking. We should be adding WA kids just about every year.

...I thunk the point @radar was making is that like Lingers and Lever, he's one we got back in the credits column of come homes!

 

P.S. at this point he had a much more accomplished individual career than the Dogga, but never had a premership medallion to show for his brilliance and character - like so many other great MFC players 1964 - 2020.

Yes, the SANFL has been very kind to us: Pickett, Petty, Chandler, Nibbler, Sparrow. Must have a very good scout over there

I have full faith in our recruiting team that when players want to go home we get very good deals in return.

Unlike Bell end and Dumbdoro that hold up trade week by trying to get 5 future 1st round draft picks for a Viv Mitchie type

Yep and credit to the club for not rushing him. 

Footywire which probably accumulates its info from the mfc website has him listed at 193cm and 93kgs.

Bit I read an article that said he was 96kg. He will probably fill out some more and crash packs wide open.
