Lucky they don't have many of those then

So if Hawks beat Freo and GCS beat Norf, we get pick 4 and Nth pick 1

And if North win we get pick 5 but will somehow convince WCE to take it and other picks for pick 1?

Well colour me confused about who to barrack for.

I want North winning and us getting pick 5. Won't happen though.

Here's a good article listing the 202 players by club who are out of contract at season's end.

I see it lists Schache who I thought had another year

Melbourne (8): Luke Dunstan (unrestricted free agent), Michael Hibberd, James Jordon (unrestricted free agent), Jake Melksham (unrestricted free agent), Andy Moniz-Wakefield, Josh Schache, Deakyn Smith, Kye Turner.

Gees we are in a good spot. Not one player on this list who I will lose sleep over.
Hibbo will retire and I reckon Melksham will get one year deal.
The rest are a wait and see. My guess is JJ goes, we possibly rookie AMW, and the rest get delisted with Schache potentially getting another year if Grundy goes and we can’t find another ruck backup.

Josh Schache is a really tough one.
Last year i saw him play a game in Ballarat at CHB. He marked everything and did a lot of Ruck work.
Is he the Backup for Max next year?

Will be a Fascinating trade period and off season.
But we have a Cup to win first…

Tom Hickey has just retired, so there’s the first domino to fall...

Play some hardball I reckon. Sydney’s 2nd round pick (from Hawthorn) which will end up being a 23 ish. Which I think is fair.

I think we definitely try to secure GCS pick and then split  our pick 5 with GWS for 7 and 11.

Going into the draft with 4, 7 and 11 into the draft will be fantastic and can set us up for another 10 years.

Unfortunately the word “Schache” and the word “tough” cannot be used in the same sentence. I met him in the pre season and he is like Sam Weideman.  Nice young bloke. He’s not the answer for any future ruck/forward role.  I’d prefer a Haydn McLean type.  Hard and raw and physically at the footy.
Schache has not physically developed and plays without real forward smarts to outbody or out think he’s opponent.  Relies on his pure talent but that’s not enough at AFL level.

And this GCS pick for points thing that us, dogs, and other clubs are trying to get their hands on.

Did we give him a 1 or 2 year deal? I assumed it was 2 and he'll be backup next year again.

I would argue his value has gone up. He came to us under a real injury cloud. He has shown he can be a very good solo ruckman. I’d say 20 - 25 is the mark.

there's also far more demand for a number 1 ruck now than 12 months ago, Swans ruck has retired, Port cleary don't have any idea who they like/don't like any of them and the cats have missed the 8 and have just lost one of their two 33yo rucks to retirement too.

Problem with Mathieson is that he thinks he's beast mode as well, probably refers to himself in the 3rd person when he talks too.
NQR AFL standard player, West Coast needs a rebuild, not a re-tool.  Go for Devon Robertson.

If that was the case, he wouldn't have made it to FA and 8 years in the system

Yeah but we have to carry BBB and TMac which is frankly ( unfortunately) a waste of 2 places..

The best scenario is 12 games between them and only 6 of them any good

Yeah, nah, Mathieson is certainly a tool and it’s a minor miracle he has lasted so long for a player who is solidly VFL quality.

Schache was given a one year deal.  I have no idea whether we'll re-sign him or not at the end of 2023.

Any murmurs that one of Tmac or BBB take a deal to retire early? Both seem physically pretty much done.

Obviously haven't had the best season this year, but similar things to your comments above were stated at the end of 2020 and the next year, they were both well deserved premiership players.

Write them off at your peril I say.

Both, but particularly T Mac have earnt their right to retire or play out his contract whenever they see fit.

Gawn Dog, can you please explain if we're getting pick 5 and splitting for 7 and 11 (which seems like a potentially good move for us), where does pick 4 come from?

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
