Those damn pesky kids that Ross wonโ€™t play that did him in.

ย

If itโ€™s Ross Lyon watch them try and keep teams to less than 40 points every week by flooding back and moving the ball slowly.

Ugh. And then watch him get annoyed in the post match interview because a journalist dares to question their game plan and how dull it is.

The whole joint should be in the NDIS program.

Has Lyon actually coached since the introduction of 6-6-6? ย May find it a lot harder do make it all quite so dull.ย

The only upside I can see if Lyon gets the job is that he no longer would be part of the Footy Classified show. ย Geez, he used to [censored] on at times.ย

Would have been sacked r5 if it wasn't for Paddy Ryder, he was the band-aid holding their whole game plan together. Saints never looked likely without Paddy, and they really got dudded on Dan Hannenbery.ย

One unlucky bounce to Stevie Miln is all that stands between Lyons and Goodwins Premiership record.

Will this club ever learn??? If they wanted an example of not taking shortcuts or knee jerk reactions, having good people and building strong foundations with strong development & culture, the Dees are a great example from going around in circles to getting it right and winning a flagย

So they decide to sack him having effectively recruited his replacement.ย  They let the man believe he had a chance when he didn't and they knew it.ย  They still made him beg for his job.ย  Then hit him for six.

Why would they put a good man who gave his all through that sort of torment.ย  The least they could have done was give him a heads up after the season ended or when Bassat came back from the cruise on Lindsay Fox's boat when it seems they hatched their plan.

No, they chose to blindside him.ย  And put him through a public humiliation.ย  Disgraceful!

It is good to see those media tweets pointing the finger where it belongs:ย  Lethlean and Bassat!!

I mentioned at the start of this thread that Lethlean had a lot to answer for.ย  Well Bassat also does.ย  The Saints deserve better leadership than they have provided.ย  Both should go.

I so feel for Ratten.ย  He has been through so much in his coaching and personal life.ย  He deserved much, much better.ย  Not the least, some humanity and care.

Well, thatโ€™s a little simplistic. Lyonโ€™s coached 170 more games than Goodwin, and for 10 years longer. Andโ€ฆ if you want to talk simplification - the bounce to win the game never happened.

Regardless my point was I canโ€™t stand his game style. I think our style of football is far more engaging to watch than anything Freo put out in his time there.

I find his belligerent, joyless coach thing tiring too.

So they had faith in Brett, right up until the last minute..

That's outrageous. So coaches of assisted club have less rights. I call BS! Not you Clint, but the Coaches association should take this on.

  1. Applying the Occam's razor principle, complete incompetence is probably the most likely reason
  2. Somewhat related to number one, back room shenanigans and shadowy conversations at board levelย led to identifying someone they decided they want to bring in as senior coach pronto - sack Ratten, create some space ahead of the draft and magically said person gets the gig (which might explain why the saints were soย inactive in the trade period - ie they wanted to give the new guyย as much input into the list as possible, and not saddleย him with player types ratten was keen on)
  3. They uncovered something NQR about Ratten they knew would likely come out at some point and wanted to get ahead of that by biting the bullet and sacking Ratten now

ย

Looking more and more like number 2, with lyon being the coach.

Which is appropriate, given it is a [censored] thing to do.

If Lyon gets the gig, it worth remembering that he shafted the saints when he got tbe dockers gig.

And in doing so Harvey was unceremoniously and unexpectedly sacked as a result.

So he will have been involved in ruining the career of two senior coaches.

I predict Lyon will fail at the Saints this time around. The comp has moved on from his game style

I'd also argue that the unlucky bounce would have mattered less if St Kilda were up by 10 goals, like we were.

It's interesting that Ratten was at Hawthorn from 2012 to 2018. It doesn't make alot of sense that he was offered a 2 year contract extension mid-season and then terminated a few months later by the very people who extended his contract.ย  Might be a coincidence but maybe not.

I doubt if any on the Saints Board have any faith at all.

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesnโ€™t Lethlean โ€œhave a bit of historyโ€ at another club or at AFL HQ?

Yeah the 6 month contract has bene in for a bit, I assumed it went to all clubs not just those assisted. ย

In the reports today their "leaders" said Ratten didn't have the structure within the club to help him succeed. ย Then why did they sack him and not fix the support/structure problems.ย

Bit like when everyone wanted to sack Hardwick (Me too) they reviewed and changed his support and assistances and the rest is history.

While places are limited why would you go there to coach.ย

PS I chose your original point no. 2 only because you used the word โ€œshenanigansโ€ ๐Ÿ˜

This is an interesting listen. Lyon gives his side of the story on leaving The Aintsย

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterdayโ€™s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourneโ€™s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldnโ€™t get any worse. Well, it did. And whatโ€™s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasnโ€™t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyonโ€™s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourneโ€™s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourneโ€™s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterdayโ€™s 7 goals 21 behinds.ย
This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. Iโ€™ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards?ย Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?ย
