Yes agreed but we have trusted that T Mac and Wiederman were it for too long to be our talls. It hasnt worked and  replacements should have been sourced

I think Ben Brown and the JVR are likely the replacements, but for one of them 2023 is too late, and for the other it might be too soon. I personally think Bruce is just a placeholder type of player, but I’ll still take him if he straightens us up. 👍

He isn't anywhere near the hand

My main point isn't about Bruce its about the club  ending up with poor options hoping BB and Tmac recover

We have had a need for a KPF for 3 years and have done nothing about developing trading or drafting one

This is just not true. At the end of 2020 we traded in Ben brown. At the end of 2021 we drafted JVR. BB worked brilliantly for us and was a key contributor to the flag, unfortunately it looks like his knee was getting the better of him this year, I have no insight as to whether they can get it right for next year, neither does anyone who has posted on this forum that I have seen. JVR is developing nicely, let’s see how he goes next year.

I would bet any amount of money that we are working hard on this problem through this trade and draft period. Just because the media circus hasn’t led with a story on it doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. Whether we succeed, that’s another thing altogether.

They were trying through the LJ trade to get Cadman. That hasn't worked.

We are loading up reasonable picks in next year's draft, with more cap space as well. That will allow opportunities.

You haven't answered, who would you have got, or should we have been able to get.

Easy to criticize, but what are your suggestions?

We could say they are idiots for not getting McKay, Cameron and Naughton. You can only get who is available at that time.

We’re unlikely to ever be a huge destination club and even if you are you need luck to get a gun forward when you need them. The draft is generally the answer and we had a crack last year with JVR and it sounds like we tried this year and will try again next (both draft and trade).

The short term answer last year was Levi Casboult at 100-1. No way I would’ve had that.

The only realistic answers I’ve seen this year were McStay, Lobb or a change in game plan with Gunston. We’ve gone for Grundy over McStay/Lobb. Defensible.

After that you get in to big outsiders like Bruce, Elliott Himmelberg, Burgess or Corbett, Esava, Fish McAsey, Oscar McDonald, throwing a boat load of cash and way too high a pick at Amartey or McLean, unretiring Josh Kennedy or hoping you can find a cheap quality key defender like Aaron Francis to allow Petty to be a swing man.

I guess we should take one or these swings if they’re cheap and available. But I’m not expecting much. Just got to be patient until we can strike with a big name or draft pick.

Unless Bruce really impresses the club I’d focus on cheap key defensive depth which is generally easier to find. If you have good competition between Turner and another solid prospect you’ll find cover for Petty forward.

I’d say they just want to make sure we don’t get caught short again while we are in this premiership window .

Last season when TMac went down it cost us dearly and BBB has always managed an ongoing injury and could go down anytime.

Personally is like us to go with a rejigged  forward line using JVR and Petty ( who I really feel have the goods) and either TMac or Brown, or a Josh Bruce as that next tall.

Yes DZ agree Turner can step up or Smithy if Petty goes forward.

Has not played yet Old  Its a shame we as a club thought BB and T Mac were enough

They clearly didn't because they drafted JVR last year...

Broooooce if he comes cheap is a no brainer

Spargo to Broooooce, I can see it now (cc: @picket fence)

Where did this rumour come from?

I honestly don't mind the Bruce option as depth.

But I'll give him the benefit of doubt because when I watched him this year he had a turning circle of Ben Holland/Chris Dawes.

Full preseason and hopefully strip a few kilos will help.

Random caller into Trade Radio I think

I don't believe it has been confirmed by any actual media person tho, but not entirely sure

Clearly I'm not talking about last year its the medium term that was the issue

Any way as  another poster has said lets see next year!

Tomlinson has 2 years at $500k and Bruce has 1 year.

So we save the last year of Tomlinson at $500k for use in 24.

We tried to get rid of Tomlinson with no takers.

We now have in his last year by swapping him with Bruce.

If Bruce plays the whole year at Casey, we are $500k better off in 2024.

Does this assume Bruce comes to us for just the last year of his contract? If so, why would he bother? Might as well stay at the Bulldogs. I would think it would be more likely we offer him 700k on a two year deal.

We thought we had LJ long term, stuffed us completely.

Weideman would be traded if Bruce came in l think. Melk isnt going to make our forward line function as he is too small for the long bombs. Coaches want the old model with resting ruck, BB and someone that can compete for the long bombs to support BB coming in from the side ie Tmac, Bruce, JVR ....  if grundy and gawn are injured then play Joel Smith / Harmes in the ruck they will compete better than Weid anyhow

You didn't see Weid in the Casey jumper near the end of the year Smith or Harmes are not tall enough to compete in AFL even Smith's jumping would not be impactful.
That's why we will keep a Weid for rucking as the SC and Goody don't share your views about our second stringers.

But if we only take him for his last year, we save $500k on Tomlinson in 24.

If we are looking at bringing in a good player that will help.

In the meantime he is cover for 2 injured forwards and experience and big body to help a raw kid.

For one year it is smart.

I'm not against it as an idea at all, particularly with Jackson, Daw and Mitch Brown gone as well, I'm just saying it's not necessarily 'cheap' given it's the same money as Tomlinson. If we were able to sign him to a 2 year deal where the 2nd year was say $150-200k then it's worthwhile, but I don't see the point in 1 year at 500k tbh.

Disgraceful!

I'm so glad that never happens here 🙄

Reality is he kicked 48 goals last season before he did his knee and that gets no where close to our ‘big’ forwards bar Fritta. Yes he’s 30 and coming off that injury but a good preseason he’s a low risk option. Lever/Gawn/Trac have all come back from knees. With Browns degenerative knee and Tmacs question marked foot, and JVR only being 19, I don’t see the issue in it, even if all Bruce does is replace the Mitch Brown role of an emergency option.

If he’s owed 500k next year, extend the contract by a year, chuck another 100k from us on top of it, and pay him 300 a season for 2 years. I see sense in it and for what it’s worth, I trust the club with our list build.

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
