Forth round pick (Saints)

Forth round pick (Melbourne)

This hasn't been the process for a few years now. If you want to upgrade a player from the rookie list you just have to have an open list spot.

Therefore, the pick doesn't actually get used.

True, a list spot is needed which we have.

But a draft pick needs to be 'used' albeit as high as 6th or 7th round.

That upgrade 'draft selection' counts as one of the 3 minimum players each club needs to draft.

The Dees have given Port Adelaide picks 33, 43 and 53 in exchange for pick 27.

"We have today been involved in a pick swap that sees us improve our hand in this year's draft," Melbourne list manager Tim Lamb told Melbourne Media.

"We have been able to do so by bundling three selections, including two that we did not intend to use at the national draft this year.

"It has always been our philosophy to try and improve our draft hand every year and we're pleased to be able to acquire selection No.27 through this trade."

Trades out - 1200 points  #33,43,53

(equivalent picks total to pick 14)

Trades in - 700 points #27

hmmmm I thought we’d use pics to bundle up points to see what we’d get from the Lions who need points

Is pick 27 enough for Grundy !!??? I thought Pies wanted a pick inside top 25 at least

I'd be guessing that Brissy will probably swap picks with Gol Coast, who have a heap of picks in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, as compared to us. I'm sure we probably asked the question of a few clubs and Port must have come back with the best offer.

Strange times.

One can only guess that a whole string of clubs have reached in principle agreements on what they would need, and now it is all being shuffled around, while a whole bunch of points-picks are getting ready to be hurled into the fireplace.

Looks like once again we'll have that weird situation where picks 15-30 or so are all pushed back a few places by the early bids, while picks 30+ start to compress as a dozen picks get cooked out for the academy sauce.

Makes sense. Bundle up picks we're not using anyway for 27 which we send to the pies for Grundy.

No messing about from the MFC. Just getting it done. Freo should take note.

We get Grundy because they want him gone simple and we don't need to over pay.

If we were only going to use pick 33 and nothing beyond that, then why not turn 33 to 27? Who cares about the late picks we would have passed up anyway.

An interesting move. 🤔

Perhaps Melbourne will on-trade pick 27# to GWS for Toby Bedford and pick 21#?

Then trade pick 21# to Collingwood for Brodie Grundy perhaps?

Love it or hate it. Dees get deals done

I've forgotten, did the Pies say they wanted a pick for Grundy inside 25 or 21?

25

Points schmoints

If we are using 27 for Grundy (or onto GWS with Bedford for 19/21) then no doubt we have spoken to those clubs and they have said theyd rather pick 27 than our three picks (despite being worth more points)

All the talk is that this draft has no depth so perhaps the extra late picks not as valuable as other years

It also means we have nothing extra to offer the Grundy deal.  Here is 27, we have no other 2nd or third rounders.  But happy to give you a fourth rounder!  Deal done!

I’m pretty sure the original pick swap which got us Kosi Pickett was a clear loss on points value. That’s why you ignore them.

The pick for Bedford is part of the #27 swap.  As it will become a pick int he 40's its final value is a lot more than the points it currently has.

Just saying we paid a hefty premium for # 27.

Not so sure LH Reckon 27 is Grundy's to Pies snd we are not taking  44 off GWS yet for Toby. Still have 52 from WC For flexibility to repay back in a deal.

Sorry. We also have pick 52 (Melb).

Can't edit my post for some reason (I would fix the typo too if I could).

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
