I've always liked Tomlinson more than the general vibe on Demonland.

But his contract is disproportionate to his potential role in 2023 and beyond. We can't be spending as much money as we are on a player who is depth, even if I rate that depth more than most. Particularly when we have Turner coming along as a key defender, and we've just re-contracted another defender in Smith.

There should be a club in the league who could use Tomlinson and if we have to pay a portion of his salary to facilitate the trade, that should be a win-win-win.

We may not need to.  He will probably get a 3 year contract from the Bulldogs and his $500 for 2023 is spread over the contract, say at $350-$400 a year.

I’m frankly surprised Carlton aren’t interested in him. He’s a better player than OMac in my opinion.
Makes sense the Dogs are looking at him. Their defense is utter rubbish.

I really can't see Turner playing on Charlie Cameron and Tom Papley - we need someone else to replace Hibbo. Currently it's Jayden or J.Smith. We need to recruit in this role.

Turner is 194cm and is a key back  in genuine competition with Tomlinson.

Agree made this same point in post a few days ago. Tommo is a tall defender and at 194cm he and Turner are competing.

However the role that lately ( since 2021) in  our elite defence by Hibbo has basically been mid height forwards eg Dusty and smalls Cameron and Pspley.

We should be looking for who is going to replace Hibbo? Smith J. Rivers Hunt Brayshaw Jordon.

Because Turner ( or JVR at times ) are our next KPD's. Unless we drop Tmac back! Especially if Petty goes forward!

We need to continue to have some good mature cover at Casey but not on significant $$$. Unless we plan on moving Petty permanently forward (which I dont agree with) that is all he is.  As mentioned another preseason into Turner and he will likely be preferred but I still feel we need a cheap mature taller defender on the list unless we plan on considering a shift of TMac or Weid back over the summer.

Do the dogs have any fringe players that address our needs . I know we where into ed Richards last year who wasn't getting a game, would be perfect for our side. Unfortunately he had too good a year for the dogs to give up

Too expensive to have on the books. I’d give him away for peanuts if another team will take his contract. Still may have some AFL quality football in him and I’d wish him well should he move on. Seems like a quality guy

could do worse if he's a cheap get. still corbett/burgess at GCS and gunston on the market as well that could fill a spot on our list potentially even schache could get rookied as a DFA

I probably disagree with most here on DL, and I don't want to lose him. I see him as much more than depth or cover. I do agree his mobility is hampered since his knee reco, but I continue to rate him very highly as a defender. He is far too good for VFL (actually he is wasted there) and he can kick. It looks like we can't keep him because other players have the coaching groups "favour" but I will hate to lose him.

If he stays he'd consider himself lucky. You can use injury as an excuse but successful clubs don't pee ball around with lines like that especially 18 months later. Competition for spots needs to be fierce and I don't understand how people can say guys like Hibbo are lucky to be here but Tommo should be persisted with.

Best way to guarantee another ankle strain.  Strapping is good post injury to get back on the day, but if you want it to repair, stop strapping further.

There is still a school of thought that strapping ankles actually places more strain on knees!

He is on $100k more than the average player. You can’t have that currency sitting at Casey.

These are facts, we can’t go around and around disputing the truth. It’s infuriating.

but we can fix that by lengthening out his contract and flattening the salary. gies from 500k for 1 season to 350k for 2/3 years and that way he gets some security

Which btw allowing a contracted player in Tomlinson to participate in a medical at the Bulldogs, provides us some leverage in any talks with the Bulldogs.

Then there's the Lobb to Bulldogs machinations.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
