Will be out in straight sets, absolute waste of a year after winning 1st 10 games, need the pre season to come up with a new game plan that actually suits the MCG We are hopeless on our home deck, I would have rather played Sydney at the scg last night

Agree, they have trouble at home, not that we will be out next week.

To win the big one, we have to play the G better. That is why playing on it could give us the learnings needed to develop a system and confidence to do it well.

We aren't far off and an extra game out there may be what we need. They will now be in the rhythm of sleeping in their own beds and having a routine without travel.

If anything the travel must be a bonding exercise that they have to create when at home.

Maybe the "loading" is set to fire us up from next weekend to dominate three in a row ??  binman??

The problem is our supporters sit there waiting to react to what is happening on the field. It's a final, chance at a prelim on the line - make some bloody noise for the team!! You don't have to sit there waiting to be wowed, create the atmosphere you want the players to feed off. Start of the last, 2 goals in it, all on the line - [censored] crickets.

People can argue all they like but we've been a quiet supporter base for as long as I can remember.
We can make some noise when things are going our way but disappear into our shells if they aint.

Having said that ... Start of the last, 2 goals in it, all on the line - Kick a forken goal.
Collingwood would've and lit their ferals up.

Your right but those things happen, its the free shots they got when we give 50mt away " even if they were staged managed" and missing sitters when we did have momentum that killed us.

Our core midfielders aren't consistently skilful enough to carry guys like Hunt, ANB & Sparrow on the flanks who are all reasonably poor decision makers & kicks

Addressing this will be just as significant as going after a messiah key forward to address our efficiency issues

After the walk of solace back from the MCG to the carpark I didn't get back home to the country until after 1am, so this is my first chance to sit and post.

I wasn't angry like I have been after other losses, more sad and disappointed. I find all the commentary about game plan a bit ridiculous - it is the same plan that got us a flag with basically the same personnel so that can't really be the problem. We won enough of the ball to win the game. But last night we were poor in a few areas, along with the one glaring problem with our F50 game plan was on full display.

Disappointments:

  • Skill execution. So much hard work by backs and midfields in defensive 50, for it to turnover at the wing or half forward or by some silly 'centring' of the ball by players who should read the moment better. So many Swans goals initiated via our own errors resulting in free running Swans play then a goal.
  • Absolutely murdered at ground level. For the talent we have through our midfield, Park, Lloyd, Mills and Rowbottam were cleaner, often first to the ball, and their system was actually amazing to watch. Their half backs were brilliant at ground level.
  • The offerings of ANB, Kozzie, Melksham, Brayshaw and Jackson. I honestly could never expect them all to play that badly in the same game.
  • Fumbling, slipping over, kicking into the corridor with floaty kicks to see one Dee v 2 Swans time and time again.
  • 7 out-on-the-full in the first half, 5 of them unpressured.

F50 Game plan:

  • Our one wood is to kick it to the left forward pocket-ish, have BBB attempt to mark, set up defensively around the ground ball, lock it in and make a chaos goal. The problem is that every other team now knows this so they simply put lots of body on BBB (often 2 people) which he can't manage, nor should he have to. If this game plan is to work, it needs a physical marking presence which we simply don't have. Or at least the other forwards working harder to free up BBB, Fritsch etc...

I am not in despair after last night, but this list of players is too good to play like they did last night. 3 'learnings" (stuff me I hate that term) to reflect on before we take on the Lions:

  • The INs and OUTs at selection will be crucial. Harmes, ANB and Melksham should not play, but ANB never gets dropped for form reasons so I can't see him being dropped unfortunately.
  • Skills and execution (Maybe Chocco leads a few sessions to tighten this up)
  • One of TMac, Weid or JVR have to play. BBB as a solo forward with Gawn or Jackson resting doesn't work, especially with Jackson playing a howler.

Glad to get that off my chest.

My thoughts exactly. When the pressure's on, it's skill, disposal and brains as well as toughness. It's the flaw in our list. It's why Collingwood are doing well too. We have fantastic competitors but even our super A-grade mids, Clarry & Trac, don't kick consistently well. Swans kicking was much more surgical and their pressure equalled ours.

To those saying where an ordinary team and were lucky to finish second get a grip. We got second because we won clutch games Blues; Freo and Lions. Our game plan looked ordinary because the opposition outplayed us. It can happen. The upside is we now have three weeks to put it together. In my eyes the Swans playing one game in four week is a massive risk. This side has a lot of pride and I am sure we will bounce back. I would not make wholesale changes but definitely bring in one of TMac; Weed or JVR. Melksham sorry your out. Get separation of our key forwards poor BBB is being set up to fail and for god sake put Max in the rush to lead the troops.

Won’t affect his ability to play per se, but must hurt like hell. It’s not the same as us all waking with no voice due to yelling.

I don't get this Dees fans are quiet line.

I've had reserved seats in M50 for several years, had front row in M50 last night.  Whether its bay specific or not, the lack of noise and crowd involvement in M50 absolutely is apparent. You dont have to just listen, you can look around and see the lack of animation, and its not just when we're well down.  I mentioned earlier Choco Williams twice flapped his arms and yelled "get us going" facing M50 and twice there was a smattering of applause, thats it.  I cant speak for other bays, but its absolutely apparent where I regularly sit unfortunately.

Spargo in hospital, scans on knees for Fritsch, Melk, Tracy according to Sam Edmund. We are looking a bit banged up after one final.

Had similar experience. Upper deck, predominently dees supporters. I was really frustrated with how quite dees supporters were, like they were out bird watching. I like dee supporters aren't aholes but they give nothing to actively support tge team.

Club knows it too - see Nazeem's video on 'how to cheer at the game'.

The crowd along with Melb's insipid game plan made if feel like a non-final.

Whilst I'd hate that our supporter base was anything like Collingwood's but we can't deny the influence that their crowd has on their team. It's like having an extra couple of players on the ground and absolutely drives their momentum shifts. Our players hear crickets by comparison.

After reading this thread the main theory seems to be we lost because the Mebourne fans didn’t make enough noise.  Not that Sydney’s pressure strangled us, not that they were cleaner, not that our bottom tier players were unsighted, but that the supporters didn’t make enough noise 🤦‍♀️

Next week will be the first game since last seasons preliminary final that we have a do or die game. This season we have been in a comfort zone for most games knowing a loss would not significantly damage us. Only when our top four spot was at risk have  we pulled all stops out and played our best. Maybe wishful thinking on my part but the plethora of injuries being carried by our players is certainly a concern.

From where I was sitting there was a long hold by Petty of the jumper, plenty of appealing for 50m and I thought one of the other umpires called that and the controlling umpire paid the 50m after getting told over radio

Nobody said that.  Its on record that even a star player wants us to make more noise, and last night a member of the coaching staff tried to gee the crowd up.  Like it or not, it does make a difference.  And we are not good at it, thats all.

I only watched on TV. Thats what the commentators said. Petty was on the mark and Reid was back and ready to take his kick as Pickett moved downfield already moving past Petty to his right  when the penalty was called.

Thanks for the info WCW.

Cheer squad looked and sounded incredible last night - the huge flag was brilliant.

Congrats to all involved for their efforts. I think I might join up next year. The passion is inspiring. Go Dees!

There's a "Fill The G" thread where posters can go to vent about the fanbase. Posters have different expectations about crowd participation. Fair enough

But the notion that the Swans supporters were louder than us is a load of bollocks
