The 3 finalists for mark of the year have just been announced and Spargo’s speckie against the dockers has made the cut! Let’s get around him 😈

Bit freaky for Charlie.

Very good mark but I'm surprised it made the short list of 3

Running with the flight, eyes on the ball, would would have been easy to infringe his opponent.  Not a bad effort at all really, but doubt it will win MOTY.

ANB's reaction is awesome

He is always first on hand for every celebration and always lights it up. Post-football he'll be a gorillagram.

Easily Georgiades but I'll vote for Charlie, as will my father, two sisters, brother and two pet dogs 😆

Joe Daniher will win with another chest mark, this time on his own.

If you really like Mark of the year as a contestthis won't win. Because you will vote for the best mark and not one just because it has a Melbourne player.

Great effort though.

This year we’re in with a shot since Charlie is up against players from clubs that don’t have a bazillion fans voting. Think, Daniher 2017. That said though, Greene will probs take it out.

Spargiepants mark easily the best on account of him running sideways to the ball’s trajectory and using the sit to stabilise himself for the grab with the body twist. Greene’s and Georgiades were both front on classic elevated presentations. Charlie’s degree of difficulty higher. Science, people.

If it wasn’t for that technicality of having to actually mark the ball Kozzi would have all 3 nominations

Didn't the AFL change how MOTY and GOTY are decided when Howe was denied the win by the weight of numbers of fans voting for others.

I thought the decision was taken 'in-house' by the AFL so this voting by fans could be a 'mock' vote to keep it in the news.

Edit:  Just found this:  "At the end of all Competition Rounds the AFL Game Analysis Committee will select the best three marks from a selection of 28 (the 23 round winners, along with 5 other contenders as determined by the AFL Media). The best three will be based on a 5/4/3/2/1 vote given by each member of the selection committee".  https://www.afl.com.au/mark-of-the-year/prizes

It doesn't say where fan voting fits in.  It doesn't say who is on the selection committee that does the 5/4/3/2/1 voting or how many.

All the technicalities aside, fantastic that Spargo is in the final three!  Very courageous going with the flight of the ball and no idea who was coming the other way.  Deserves extra points from the voters for that.

...and just after the half-time siren sounds.

It was a very very good mark. As seems to be Charlie's way, he appears very nonchalant as he went back which I think, dulls the experience for the person choosing to vote.

Agreed.

I reckon the OTT commentators may get Draper GOTY because it sounded so exciting.  But Nic Nat has done that dozens of times so Draper's goal isn't really so special.  Just the noise is a few levels higher.

Bit disappointed one of Kozzie's miracle goals in Alice didn't make the final 3.  Or his match winning, top 2 ladder position setting, goal vs Carlton with 10 seconds to go while being tackled.  Right up there for a crazy, match winning goal in a clutch moment.

So, I’ve wasted precious time voting for Charlie over and over. Cool.

Thanks for the info, Luci.

We must never think participation is wasted, WCW (though perhaps it can be a little overindulged in?) $5000 would be nice, too!

I've voted. There's no great distinction in the 3 elevations, and Charlie's 'hold' and landing are both close second bests to Greene's. So the running with the flight sets it apart, I believe.

(An annoying curiosity with the voting on-line (why am I surprised!...):  I accidentally highlighted Georgiades and it wouldn't let me change to my intended vote. Only solution was to vote on another device. Grrr... On the plus side, my vote registered, despite me not ticking the box that would have seen me inundated with Four n Twenty promos, Then again, they've probably put me in the 'not to win $5000' pile. Grrr again...)

Entering competitions 101 - ALWAYS tick the promotional material box. Once the comp’s done just unsubscribe to the annoying emails. 😏

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
