Alas Colin, I think the battle for correct apostrophe use has been well and truly lost, not just in this example but also in the overwhelming number of nuffies who think that plurals (or any word ending in 's') require one.

In addition to apostrophes and capital letters (as pointed out in another thread), a colon can completely change the meaning of a sentence.

Consider the difference between "I enjoy eating my wife's cooking" and "I enjoy eating my wife's colon".

Just needed to quote this so it appeared on another page.

Also because it made me hungry.

Yes. A two-year deal is fair.
He’s showing signs this year of being definitely a chance to partner with Kozzzzy as dangerous small forwards. He’s just got to “ Do … rather than think” more often

No idea if he stays or goes but I just wanted to say he seems like an absolute jet of a person.  I loved his interview of the Gus n Gawn podcast.  Great sense of humour, respectful, hard working.  On that basis, I hope he plays his entire career with us.

There is a report this morning that we have offered a 2 - 3 year contract so the ball in his Toby's court.

He had been a rookie and last year signed only a one year contract as a senior player so the latest offer reflects his work this year and the clubs faith in him.

Today’s Herald Sun is reporting that “Melbourne’s super-sub Toby Bedford is in the Giants’ sights as a potential replacement for Bobby Hill.” The article suggests that he’s behind the club’s other small forward options in Kozzy, ANB and Charlie Spargo as well as the likes of Kade Chandler.

Love him as a player, his speed is a real asset. However the fact is we are in desperate need of young KP talls and another ruck, with too many small forwards who are too good for VFL but can’t get a game. Therefore we should consider some trades.

I remember we bid on Matthew Flynn in his draft year, which was matched by GWS at Pick 41, and we proceeded to pick mitch king at 42.

In and out of the team at GWS, 24yo... solid set of hands. Wonder if thatd be an option in a trade with Bedford?

Would prefer to keep Bedford. We seem to have depth but if we lost Kozzi to an injury, Toby is the obvious replacement. Has shown a lot more than Chandler at afl level

Agree. He is also a replacement for other small forwards if injured.

Essendon reportedly are also interested.

Ess lost Tippa during the year and GWS looks set to lose Bobby Hill.  At either club he will quickly be in the starting 22 as neither are blessed with small fwds.

We can't give him a starting 22 spot as our list and selections currently stand.

While one report said 'the demons won't let him go lightly', I doubt we will stand in his way.

Chandler hasn't been given a block of 4 AFL games like Bedford. At VFL level, Chandler has shown a better skillset than Bedford, but Bedford has shown a bit of X Factor at AFL level. It's line ball IMO.

With most required players re-signed for next year, and Hibberd, Hunt and Melksham likely to get another contract, we need to move on some fringe players. Players like Bedford and Tomlinson have some currency.

Hibbo will be 33 in January and IMO should be offered a gig to play a year or two at Casey and assistant coach Casey as well. Yes he has played well on Cameron but he is coming to the end of his AFL career. Melk will get another year and Hunt two.

Channelling my inner @Demonstone , @Demonlandmight want to move the apostrophe in the thread title.

Bomber's → Bombers'

The former would indicate a particular ndividual while the latter indicates a plurality or grouping.

The only 'Bomber' I know in the AFL industry would be Mark 'Bomber' Thompson. And considering what he has gotten up to during his away from football life in recent times, we most definitely don't want Toby on his radar!

Colin - I believe that Bomber Thompson was, before starting at Essendon, known as Bomba Thompson, after Bomba the Jungle Boy who was, I believe, a childrens' story character in the  Tarzan genre.

Im surprised that this keeps coming up. Bomber Thompson was never Bomba. Ken Sheldon the St Kilda coach was called BomBa because he looked exactly like Bomba the Jungle boy.  Sheldon looked like the actor who played Boy, the adopted son of  Tarzan in eight Tarzan movies, as well as his role as Bomba the Jungle Boy in a dozen B-Movies. They'd show these sometimes on Saturday afternoons. He was a big hit in the early 60's to kids and IRWC it was Lou Richards who coined it.  But its not that long into the past for this to be mistaken so regularly.

Unfortunately it's hard to see us retaining both Bedford and Chandler for opportunities, but we do need to retain one of them.  I really rate both, Toby has more X-factor and that's what we need, so I hope it's him but would be sorry to lose Kade who seems like a great person to have at the club.

No Bomber Thompson was always Bomber Thompson. I'm the same age and from the same area as him. Went to school with some of his mates.

Good to see that Bedford should stay. He's in my best 22 that says it all.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
