A class act from Brodie Grundy. It's a shame things didn't work out at the Demons. It had so much potential during the Pre-Season. But it just wasn't to be.

I wish him all the best at the Swans (except against us).

    Honest, thoughtful, respectful, grateful and intelligent is Brody. I’m completely SHOCKED the sensationalist, mindless, muck-raking media even considered publishing those thoughts.

    Heard the interview. He speaks really well & was respectful with his responses when asked about Melbourne.

    It's not his fault that the club couldn't make it work. They sold him a plan and couldn't execute it.

    Good luck to him at Sydney. I have no issue with him.

    I did have a laugh when he said he found a place in North Bondi about 10 minutes to training & a bit different than driving out to Casey

    Really nice bloke: my family met him at the club family day earlier this year and took an instant like to him.

    And just on a side note - does Brodie have a spot on our 2024 calendar?😀!

    What a wasted opportunity for Melbourne, we had a chance to double down on our strength in the ruck and continue the two-ruck strategy that worked so well previously.

    It might not have worked as well as we hoped, but it was still a hell of a lot better than the alternative (Gawn with broken toe and Schache spending all game as an unused sub). 

    Heaven forbid Gawn gets injured again next year.

    I get the romanticism of Gawndy and I was one who was all for this trade. I watched Grundy closely and saw a ruckman without any other skills. Can’t mark, can’t kick goals, won’t run defensively which is the Melbourne way. 
     

    Grundy is his own worst enemy who will tap the ball at his feet and work offensively as a second midfielder. He has great looking moments but his substance is not that great for a player getting the big dollars. The club can’t  have an expensive back up to Gawn.
     

    The other element to this failed experiment was Gawn is not a KPF. He can play a roaming ruck moving forward having impact in games, but won’t do this consistently.

    To be fair to the club, I think it was as much Grundy not being able to play as a forward as much as it was Melbourne's failure to utilise him.

    No point having 2x rucks that only play one position.

    i'll disagree a bit here - i think it was as much about gawn not being able to be a #1 forward target

    grundy was only ever a ruckman, not a forward target, at the end of the day

    i do wonder how it would've worked if the skipper hadn't been injured early on vs the bears in rd 2 - the grawndy combo looked okay in pre-season and r1, and then they never really got a decent crack at it outside of that

    gawn is the game's generational ruckman; to have him deployed forward for over half the game is to waste a unique playing talent

    More so 2 expensive ruckman vying for the one position.  I suppose the club might have thought that one of Gawn or Grundy could have made a fist of it up forward but alas, that didn't happen 

    But we always needed to replace Jackson with another ruckman and as a means to an end, we've now added Fullarton to replace Grundy

    In effect, Grundy helped us achieve a top 4 position by ably filling in for Gawn when he was injured (as well as rucking well with Gawn in the team)

    It was worth a punt as we couldn't just go into the 2023 season with Schache as the only back up to Gawn

    I do agree with your points and I've said the whole time I'd hoped they'd give it a go for one more year.

    But as the season went on something happened to splinter the relationship. (There obviously a lot of speculation about what it was but I have no idea, but it was bloody obvious to all watching).

    But back to my point was it round 5 vs Essendon? Grundy got towelled up, I'd argue he wasn't worth the cash.

     

    Edit. I also like that the real reasons haven't come out publically, it shows we were both respectful in parting ways. Otherwise it have been the brick McLean situation all over again.

    Spoke to a friend this morning who is a Swans supporter.Paul is well connected to the Swans management and last week met a recruiter who told him the Swans are very happy with Brodie.

    Groundbreaking info there. So were we this time last year. He quickly showed he was fairly one dimensional and several running attempts at goal that missed, where he burnt his teammates raised questions about his worth. He will probably be a good player for Sydney, but he was surplus to our needs and wasn’t prepared to adjust his game. Apparently refused to play on finals. A similar pattern had emerged at Collingwood

    I bet they're happy. We have helped Sydney become a far more improved side in exchange for a couple of mediocre draft picks (unless Sydney flop this year and the second round pick becomes interesting).

    I get that we had no leg to stand on in terms of bargaining power, but at the same time, we were under absolutely no obligation to trade him.

    Always risky improving another contender but also need to judge how we go with list management and salary spending (Given we've cleared space moving him on etc).

    Brodie will play well for 4 or five rounds. The Media will hail his recruitment, and the Sydney brains trust, as a master stroke while they ridicule us for getting it wrong. Then things will turn sour as Brodie's weaknesses are exposed (just like they were for us). By the end of the season fans in general will be questioning how he is still getting a game.

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form.       The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

      The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace.They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
