DistrACTION Jackson 10,753 Posted April 17, 2023 Posted April 17, 2023 He had a tough day up against two ruckmen pretty much by himself. The team as a whole was terrible so think it's a bit rough singling him out. May, Tomlinson and Petty were all terrible and offered almost nothing aerially. 10 1 Quote
BDA 23,048 Posted April 17, 2023 Posted April 17, 2023 His defensive efforts were poor on the weekend as pointed out by the commentary team. Needs to work on this for sure. I thought his rucking and around the groundwork was ok. Needs to build his tank more. We’d be in real strife if he wasn’t around to cover for Maxy. 1 1 Quote

I know we're used to a certain level of athleticism with Maxy but there were a number of times we could have used Brodie tracking back to help out the defenders, it's the little things. 1 Quote
CatFishPig 465 Posted April 17, 2023 Posted April 17, 2023 Calm the farm. He wiill absolutely snack against the Tigers Monday night and everyone will be back saying he is in AA form again. 7 Quote

I think this is the standard type of over-saturated-AFL-media hyperbole. I get that making a weeks worth of material out of 9 games can be tough, but the media go way over the top with their assessment of players and teams early in the season. Bombers killed us all over the park. Grundy was a lone ruck against 2 rucks with a good game plan. End of story 9 1 3 Quote
rpfc 29,030 Posted April 17, 2023 Posted April 17, 2023 He was close to BOG against Syd and WCE and then a Dees ‘fan’ comes out of the woodwork with his ‘worries’… I would say he was a troll if it wasn’t the personification of the hand wringing Melbourne supporter to fall apart like this. 6 2 Quote

Did Collingwood sell us a lemon? David King in particular has shown some vision of Brodie a few times this season that isn't up to the standard we require. I'm worried. Honestly I don't think we'll get a clear picture until half a season is done at least. This trade will be silly to critique week by week, especially early in the season. 2 Quote
Pipefitter 2,235 Posted April 17, 2023 Posted April 17, 2023 The footage is real cherry picking. Draper gave up chasing him a few times. My only concern moving forward is his lack aerial ability. Gawn is going to be such a huge loss when he eventually retires. Quote

old dee 24,084 Posted April 17, 2023 Posted April 17, 2023 This may not be the right thread but does anyone know why Casey are playing the Hawks in Wonthaggi in two weeks time? This competition is a joke who makes these decisions. 1 Quote

We paid very little tradewise and Collingwood are paying a portion of his salary. I hope we don't over react and rush Max back on Monday night because the Tigers have no ruckman of note with Nank, Soldo and even Lynch out injured. Grundy can roll again this week and I am confident we will see a response from the whole team. 2 Quote

Hopefully in the long run over the term of his contract we'll be able to call it a win as well. We just need to not look at him through Max eyes. I'm also backing him in this week and Max can aim for a North return. 2 Quote
MrFreeze 2,055 Posted April 17, 2023 Posted April 17, 2023 He definitely got out worked by Essendon's two ruckmen. I think we need the dual rucks to compete with other teams with dual ruckman, but it shouldn't be an issue with Gawn's close return. He did however drop several marks during the game where he had very clear and clean opportunity to clunk them, that was most frustrating for me. Quote
dazzledavey36 56,371 Posted April 17, 2023 Posted April 17, 2023 (edited) I'm another who's questioned the Grundy trade at times. But I think it's pretty unfair for First Crack to single out Grundy labouring when he was clearly trying to signal for the handover with JVR. And whilst I don't want to be too hard on a 3rd gamer he needed to be more reactive and better at spoiling in that contest. The coaches will point all this out to him as part of his development. So I think some in the commentary around Grundy here has been harsh. Grundy has held up his end well for us but I think having Gawn back will be a blessing for him as he still playing catch up for match fitness. Edited April 17, 2023 by dazzledavey36 1 Quote
Roost it far 10,180 Posted April 17, 2023 Posted April 17, 2023 Grundy is giving us way more than Jackson would be at this point in time. 4 Quote
Guest Posted May 1, 2023 Posted May 1, 2023 The DA had a moment with Brodie in the last quarter of Saturday’s game. He was up our end and the play was up the other end and we spontaneously started a “BroDEE GrunDEE” chant. He turned and left his opponent, walked towards us and without even looking at us gave us a very quick, very discreet horns gesture like this, but way more understated and sans the wide open mouth… then quickly turned and walked back to his opponent. During play any type of engagement is never expected (understandably). But when it does happen it causes such a stir! Quote
Demon Disciple 12,538 Posted May 1, 2023 Posted May 1, 2023 As much of a fan I am of Brodie, the first 3 quarters he couldn’t catch a cold. Happy for him to spend all week refining his overhead marking technique. Once that clicks he’ll got to another level (a Max Gawn kind of level 🤤) 1 Quote
Dante 2,739 Posted May 2, 2023 Posted May 2, 2023 Brodie loves it at the Melbourne footy club, he loves everything about the club and he will play his heart out for the club. He's coming back from a long layoff and like all players that have been out for a lengthy period, it will take time for him to regain fitness and let's not forget he has to adapt to a new game plan. He's played better than Dogga was playing last year and will only get better. He's an exceptionally good player and we will probably see the best of him in the second half of the year. 9 Quote
durango 2,024 Posted May 2, 2023 Posted May 2, 2023 When we recruited Brodie I was ecstatic and he has to date lived up to the expectations but his marking is poor for such a tall man I guess nearly a year in the injury wilderness has sapped his confidence in that area. So I agree he will get better and better in that area in the future. 1 Quote
