Rankine for pick 5 but there are many who say we should be happy with 10,14 and a reserve grade ruck for Jackson.

Did Rankine have a good 2021/22. Can recall when he burst on the scene but I haven't followed GCS for the last two years

Do we need him, and the salary that goes with it? I think Blake Howes will start 2023 Rnd1 as the other wingman, and stay there all year

Every time I see Blake, he reminds me of Flower.  At this stage Tom, but if he could get to 25% of Robbie I'd be rapt!

He is a beautiful mover I am very confident he'll be a regular in a season or so.

Not sure what this is based on to be honest. He’s played 7 games for Casey in 22. He’s averaging less that 14 disposals per game and kicked 3 goals. Hasn’t had one game over 20 possessions.

That’s not screaming that he’s ready for the next level to me.

Fair enough, it's a big call, but I'm running with it, happy for you to hold it to me.

What was Bowey's VFL record like before he got picked? I wonder what his stats would look like had he had the same injury issues as Howes

Howes will be ok and much better injury free and after another pre season.

Pre injury Howes wasn't looking that great...he was ok at times.

Ofter he looked/looks lost out on the park and doesn't appear a natural reader of the play which you have to be to play a wing.

If we can get Amon I would be all in. We have a window of opportunity over the next 2 to 3 years and we need to take it.

Howes may or may not come on...time will tell.

No one said they would be "happy" with 10, 14 and a secondary ruck for Jackson. We'd all be happy with higher picks/players

Some (myself included) speculated on what might eventuate given what picks and potential player swaps Freo might complete. They currently don't have any picks in the top 10, maybe they will by the end of trading. All the better if so

We can hold our breath until we're blue in the face, but we cannot demand something Freo don't have and may not have

Though they are completely different type of players, Rankine is every bit as valuable to the right club as Jackson would be for Freo, not that one is better than the other.

If I was building a list from scratch I would put significantly more value on LJ than Rankine - so no, one is better than the other in my view and that one is LJ

But no ones ever building a list from scratch.  When we drafted Kozzie people said we were crazy as he's just a forward pocket / pressure forward.  But he is incredibly important to our team / structure / system as he filled a need we are crying out for.

Kozzie wasn't drafted to a rebuilding side

Rankine is going to a club who are years away. I would rather Norf and Hawks list over the Crows.

I think that's obvious - recruitment is always about team needs

That's why assessing a players relative  value only makes sense using the hypothetical I mentioned

The question was which is the better / more valuable footballer - IMO it's LJ by a big margin. I don't really care if others disagree

Adelaide are not building from scratch

Maybe they value Rankine for their needs more than a ruck.

Regardless, they have pick 5 atm. Freo do not

With the rumour of rankine turning down 800k a year from GC what does that mean for our negotiations with Pickett who I’d argue is better, we certainly can’t  afford another player at that price.

But they have a lot we would want.  Young, Serong, Chapman, Henry, Amiss to name a few plus their first rounder.

I know they don't want to deal those players but that could get the deal done so suggesting they "just can't" isn't right.  WCE sit in the wings.  PSD is an option for us.  They've rated Jackson very highly based on their reported offer to him.

I'd play hard ball.  WCE have pick 2.  Freo, it's in your hands.

Rankine seems like a nuffy. Kozzy seems very happy at the MFC. One small forward is not the same as the other.

Rankine is currently discount Akermanis.

His upside could be actual Akermanis level, though.

One thing you can be certain of - Melbourne's pick 34, 41 and 52 will be crucial to any deal going through!

I would want at least $900,000 a year to play with the GC and i am 59.
Rankine isn’t worth huge money yet. But GC are just GC (mostly harmless)

Jeremy Cameron is a significantly better footballer than Jackson, and GWS only received what Geelong had to offer. There would have been other Vic clubs with better draft capital, but it's irrelevant once the player nominates his club of choice.

EDMUND’S MEGA TRADE UPDATE ON TARANTO, JACKSON, GUNSTON, RIOLI AND MORE

“West Coast believe they’re still in the hunt for Luke, so we cannot rule out the Eagles.

“Fremantle are seen to be the frontrunner there, that might still be the case, but the Eagles maintain they’re still in the race for the WA-born ruckman.

“Luke Jackson’s gone, let’s just state that as fact.”

Wonder if we'll ever get to the stage where GC stem the loss of players.

Got little for Wright/Brodie/Scrimshaw in return as well.

Cameron was a RFA, Jackson isn't.  He can't choose his club.

Not irrelevant, surely:  there is still a negotiation, and a price.

I went back out of interest to see what the difference is.

2018 he got 48 frees for (22 games, 2.18 per game)

2019  44 (22 games, 2 per game)

2020 6 (9 games, 0.66 per game)

2021 11 (13 games, 0.84 per game)

2022 11 (16 games, 0.68 per game)

Quite a different

I reckon 4 or 5 of those frees in 2021 were in the GF too!

.......if he got 4 or 5 frees in the 2022 Grand Final, I'd be very happy.

Correct, he received 4 in the GF. Prior to that he'd only been paid 7 from 12 games as a Demon.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
