Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Correct, he received 4 in the GF. Prior to that he'd only been paid 7 from 12 games as a Demon.

Cameron was a RFA, Jackson isn't.  He can't choose his club.

GWS matched the offer, so he was no longer a RFA. He was then out of contract, which is exactly the same situation as Jackson.

I'm not a fan of restricted free agency to be honest, offers are so rarely matched it's pointless, and why would you want to keep a player who doesn't want to be there.

Usually it gives u the upper hand if u match the offer.

Wonder if we'll ever get to the stage where GC stem the loss of players.

Got little for Wright/Brodie/Scrimshaw in return as well.

They paid to dump Brodie, were happy to dump Wright who was battling away in the reserves and they had to clear Scrimshaw who I don't think ever wanted to be there but signed  a big contract to stay purely to lock in a nice start to his earnings. Brodie and Wright look great now but they just weren't performing at the Suns, I honestly wouldn't have predicted their improvement at new clubs.

They've now good a solid core of senior players and a really good chance of keeping King, Lukosius, Rowell, Anderson, Hollands, Powell, Ballard, Ainsworth long term.

Rankine is a blow, but I think it says less about GC and more about the Crows desperation and ability (mostly through lack of their own talent) to go after a big recruit.

Rankine joining is more akin to Dawson joining the Crows in a very similar move than it is the usual GC exodus.

Really the biggest issue the Suns had was paying massive overs to keep and to recruit players. They now have enough senior bodies that they can finally stop handing out crazy contracts to fringe mature players to come join them. That was step 1. Step 2 was to stop being so desperate in signing their own players on mega deals. Losing Rankine hurts but he's not a bad case study for the rest of the GC list. If they can wear losing Rankine they might stop signing the next Darcy McPherson to crazy money.

So if a club matches an offer it just becomes an out of contract player?

Yes. Although there's a strong suggestion the AFL would want to still see a trade deal done with a matched restricted free agent, because it does open up the AFL to restraint of trade issues (the entire reason for free agency to begin with). Hence why Geelong managed to placate the Giants with their pretty ordinary package of mid/late first round picks.

Fair enough, it's a big call, but I'm running with it, happy for you to hold it to me.

What was Bowey's VFL record like before he got picked? I wonder what his stats would look like had he had the same injury issues as Howes

If you take out the Geelong game where he must’ve been injures as he only got 4 touches, he averaged 24.3 touches across 7 games.

The suggestion is Grundy is a good fit if he came for little in a trade and the pies paid a good chunk of his salary.

if they’re desperate to free up cap space I think it’d be silly not to seriously consider it at the right price.

Agree totally , but, we also need another back up ruck.

A club will match the offer if the compensation pick is significantly less than what they can get via a trade. If there was no compensation pick, more clubs would match an offer and force a trade.

Pretty good, but like I mentioned, he didn't have the same injury issues as Howes.

This thread isn't about Howes though, so that's all I'll say on it. I'm on record with my thoughts on him, so happy to have this discussion middle of next year.

Ah well, we need a spot to keep funnelling in younger mids through team. It’s hardly an expansive role, and we should overpay for a forward instead of a wing.

Other than Dunstan there's no genuine mid from the MFC playing at Casey not to mention a ruckmen.

Given the age and quality of the MFC senior midfield one can understand this but it's only a few years ago that most on this Board used to say you can't go wrong drafting a mid fielder

Yes, because Sparrow, Harmes, and JJ (and up until recently Brayshaw) are mids that have been playing other roles so they can play AFL in our system. We don’t have replacements for Oliver and Petracca (there are none) but we have plenty of mids ready to jump in there.

But they have a lot we would want.  Young, Serong, Chapman, Henry, Amiss to name a few plus their first rounder.

I know they don't want to deal those players but that could get the deal done so suggesting they "just can't" isn't right.  WCE sit in the wings.  PSD is an option for us.  They've rated Jackson very highly based on their reported offer to him.

I'd play hard ball.  WCE have pick 2.  Freo, it's in your hands.

Personally, I'm not convinced Jacko is gone.

But if he wants out, I 100% agree we should play hard ball.

We owe Jackson nothing and homesickness doesn't tick the 'personal reasons' box.

Would I be correct in assuming etiquette dictates that players only nominate when both the club they are with and the club they wish to be drafted to are no longer in the finals. In which case, we we only find out after the Grand Final who wishes to come to us? 😬

I think that would be the case. We would want to avoid opposition players nominating us and destabilise a finals run. ‘Excuse me, Ben Brown? Is Player X who just nominated Melbourne going to replace you?’

As an aside, I hate the Rugby League, signing people 12 months out. And real rugby fans up here hate it - it’s the journos and those that don’t really care that think it is fine.

It's an interesting add on @rpfc, historically I didn't like the idea, however now I feel I'm more accepting of it. See Adam Kingsley, who still has a job for Richmond... no one is questioning that. I personally do not feel it is any different for a player. And actually I am sure of the player it ISN'T any different. That of course, is probably not the fan/supporter/member experience.

So Karl Amon has chosen Hawthorn... Just like Cerra players making the wrong decisions... Oh well

Hawthorn has been a destination club for decades with a clubroom full of recent premiership cups. They wont be down the ladder long and Amon will get a regular game there which he wouldnt at Melbourne.

No-one would put a sizeable bet on the hawks not winning a flag (later) this decade. They"ve won premierships every decade since 1961.

There are many teams ahead of them at the moment... Dees, Bulldogs, Brisbane, Geelong, Freo, Carlton. It will  be tough for them to beat all of those, we shall see

    GAMEDAY: Rd 07 vs Richmond

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger. The Dees will have to be switched on tonight. A win will keep them in the hunt for the Top 4 whilst a loss could see them fall out of the 8 for the first time since 2020.

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh

It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
