Thought we could have a dedicated thread to discuss player movements both Melbourne and non Melbourne related as player movement speculation ramps up in the back half of the season.

Please keep any Luke Jackson discussion to his dedicated thread.

To kick things off we have an article in The Age suggesting GWS is having yet another salary cap squeeze with Tim Taranto possible a casualty with Geelong, Richmond, Collingwood and Essendon all interested.

Bruhn from GWS likely to leave

Classy mid, similar to Cerra albeit not as tall, wonder if we could be keen given last years interest in cerra

We don’t need inside mids, so Bruhn and Taranto are not required for us.

Obviously it’s all about keeping our top talent together during our window, looking to improve our bottom 5-6 if we can

Well, both Curnow & McKay are free agents in 2023, so that's our replacements for Brown & McDonald all sorted.

Actually, both McKay's are out of contract in 2023, and both are also restricted free agents. What are they, twins or something?

That would be a fun way to top up for stage two of 'operation neverending premiership glory'.

Bruhn is an outside player.

Twins but Blues got the better one.

Still at well over 200 cms it would be worth trying.

We probably cannot attract players chasing $$$s.  MFC needs to manage the salary cap to keep Brayshaw and Jackson in top of others on serious $$$ like Gawn, Trac, Clarry, May, Lever, Viney, Salem and Langdon.  Need to find a few bargains like Haydn McLean and Sam Sturt to present more forward options.

we got Dunstan instead. which we would have got cheaper than Bruhn is likely to be.

who do we think we will lose at years end, besides the big two in the media atm?

i think likely to look elsewhere is:

Bedford, Hunt, Smith maybe a Chandler(he is the one we need to try keep from this group)

and then moved on is:  Baker, Melksham, M. Brown, Daw who none would get a contract elsewhere and Daw retired.

The other one that could look to move is Tomlinson, but his contract might halt that.

not sure Hunt and Smith hold trade value, but Chandler and Bedford would have a bit

Why would we trade out Bedford?

Im not saying trade, as per the second line in my statement "could look elsewhere"

purely if he asked for a trade.

Richmond picked up Lynch as a FA at about this stage in their window… exactly what we need but sadly I can’t see where a top-tier, free agent key position player is coming from

tiges got lynch after their first premiership - part of what helped then win two of the next three imo

the equivalent for us would be picking up, say, charlie curnow at the end of next year as a high-priced free agent

they traded out baker and higgins to the aints for not huge return in consecutive years, and lost ellis via free agency to gc17; they're not exactly 'key' players - the equivalent of us losing spargo, chandler, and perhaps a neal-bullen?

by comparison it looks like we are up against it to retain jackson, a key part of our plans for the next decade

i remain confident that gus brayshaw is going nowhere

If Jackson does leave finding another ruck and key forward won't be easy.

The fact that Freo are now wanting Lobb to stay, might be due to someone not coming to them.

Agree. There is no like for like replacement. This current draft has a few really good tall prospects, admittedly not an expert and don't seem to be of the same quality as the similar players are not projected currently to be in the top 5, but I think if we lose Jackson we would want a back of top 10 pick and a pick around 15 and a future 1st to pick up 2 prospects, one being a potential B.Brown replacement and another for Luke Jackson. F1st to help keep adding to our list and give us trade ammunition to add to our core.

Talls like Ben Brown and Jackson don't grow on trees are aren't usually available on the open market.

is that so? all the talk is that he's definitely out the door, which seems unfathomable to me after the sort of season he's been having

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
