I think Laurie will be in front of Melksham when a spot opens up next time. I see the Melksham role as his role.

    I have to agree. On a like for like basis, Bedford is a better small forward than 200cm Coleman medal winning Ben Brown.

    Was a good display. Showed some similar patterns and structures working well. Players able to familiarise themselves with tactics.

    Hunt Rivers Bedford Weiderman, Dunstable all gave glimpses of higher level ability.

    Ellison , Bell, Montez, JVR all showed glimpses of potential. JVR will need to muscle up before any sign of promotion , but boy can see great promise

    All others playerscontributedand showed why they are unbeaten on top.some really impressive cameos.

    Call me crazy and i'll no doubt cop some heat over this but....

    Although he doesn't have the elusiveness & skills on his left side, nor the aerial acrobatics (yet).  Is also more likely to be played as a small forward / occasional mid rather than an attacking HB.

    In the three matches i've seen Moniz he reminds me just a tad of something akin to a very very raw Gavin Wanganeen.  While i'm in no way suggesting he will have the sort of career Wanganeen had, this kid might be heading towards something pretty special (in his own right).  Very early days though of course.

    Play Jackson and Mitch Brown as the keys and use Bedford off the bench. Brown hasn't had a kick for a month.

    That is a different structure than we have had for all of our success. And Bedford would just be a few poor games from being called ‘pathetic’ by you so what does it matter really?

    EARLY FREEZE by KC from Casey

    If the publicity ahead of Queens Birthday Monday was all about the Big Freeze and the game to follow the pre-game entertainment then the hardy group that braved the country’s cold snap to travel out to the windy plains beyond Cranbourne were given an early taste of what was to come in the Casey's big 52-point win over Collingwood VFL.

    The day started well with the Demons comprehensively beating the VFLW Magpies in the curtain-raiser elimination final and then their male counterparts donned the traditional Springvale heritage kit to dominate their rivals in the VFL match.

    With Melbourne holding back three players for emergency duties (Baker, Chandler and Tomlinson), Casey was left with 11 AFL-listed players but the VFL boys blended perfectly with them in what was a dominant display in the wild, woolly and freezing conditions.

    They were out of the blocks quickly in a 6 goal to nil opening term with the young and the old of Casey featuring. Youngster Roan Steele from Frankston YCW started things off with a left foot snap followed by Jimmy Munro’s long 50 metre goal. A couple of Casey talls in Jack Bell and Josh Smith chipped in among a great soccer goal from dangerous young Demon Jacob Van Rooyen and nippy forward Andy Moniz-Wakefield. A feature of the  first quarter was Casey's deadly accuracy in front of goals.

    When the teams changed ends, Collingwood rallied briefly with the wind and were competitive for a while but the avalanche continued with more individual goals from Taj Woewodin, late inclusion Riley Baldi who was having a break out game, Luke Dunstan who was having a blinder and Sam Weideman who had played strongly for limited results on the scoreboard.

    By half time, when the rain had well and truly arrived to douse out any chance of a Magpie revival, the game was all but over. Coach Mark Corrigan would have been pleased with the fact that only one of his team’s 11 goals had come from a multiple goalkicker - Van Rooyen.

    The rest of the game turned into a dreary slog in the wet and when conditions moderated there was no pot of gold under the Casey rainbow for the visitors. The second half was an even arm wrestle but the Demons could be well satisfied going into the bye round undefeated and well on top.

    Dunstan rounded off a four quarter performance with 38 possessions, seven clearances, six tackles with solid contributions from Trent Rivers, Bailey Laurie, Taj Woewodin and Andy Moniz-Wakefield and Jayden Hunt. Toby Bedford also impressed with his strong tackling. Van Rooyen showed his versatility after kicking his two first half goals by backing up in the ruck when Josh Smith injured his meniscus.

    Casey’s skipper Mitch White added two goals in the gloom of the third quarter while Jimmy Munro was the perfect foil for Dunstan with 28 disposals. Jack Bell had a huge game in the ruck with 29 hit outs and 14 possessions and, as mentioned earlier Baldi produced an excellent all round game, the best of his brief VFL career. Another excellent performance came from Corey Ellison who held sway in the key defensive position in the absence of Tomlinson and Daniel Turner.

    In the end, it was another big, albeit early freeze for a visiting team at Casey Fields.

    MFC could do worse than rookie Ellison in 2023. I saw him kick five goals at Werribee and thought he played well yesterday in the backline.

    11 MFC Listed in Casey on the weekend.  Rivers will be back in the MFC team very soon. He’s too good for VFL and offers a lot of defensive pressure, run and energy in our back half. 

    12 Casey listed. That’s a good blend and shows some of the strength in the local players. Guys like Munro and White are seasoned VFL players but it’s great to see youngsters like Grey, Ellison, Bell, Steele and Baldi getting games and standing up at the level.

    I thought that was Jack Bell's best game at VFL level. I reckon he's really starting to adjust well ro senior level.

    Still fairly skinny and would get monsterd at AFL level, but certainly starting to put together a good patch of form.

    We'd be out-marked repeatedly in our forward line, leading to no crumbing opportunities, and you'd then write Bedford off for failing to impact the game.

    Meanwhile either Gawn would be rucked into the ground, or we'd be even shorter and less likely to take a forward 50 mark if we moved Jackson into the ruck when resting Gawn.

    He is an outside chance next season after another pre season with us. Is not the worst and uses the ball well.

    This bloke can play very nicely on the inside NS....i agree re bull at a gate.  I remember when we were all screaming for Clarry to break out using some grunt (driving his legs on the burst) to the outside and kick more often.

    With enough training (probably full pre-season) i reckon it just might be possible for Dunstan as well.  Take his game to another level.... what an asset he would be

    Good progress. Good signs so far.  But probably earliest debut is in 2023 imv

      From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

    • CASEY: Gold Coast

      Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

    • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

      The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
