If Langdon is not ready to play I would bring back Hibberd and play Brayshaw and Jordan on the wings.

This has to be considered.

Brayshaw was for the most part good tonight at half-back and has been great all year. I'm sure the FD will be loathe to move him after 11 weeks of learning to be a defender. But the Spargo on the wing experiment was an utter failure and we can't repeat it.

Any idea what the issue with Petty is, if he is out plus May we really going to struggle to contain the swans. If Trac still has issues he shouldn’t be playing next week either. One thing is certain we need to come into next week with no passengers.

Salem and Landon straight back in if fit for Melksham and Dunstan , Tomlinson for May.

Wish I had ideas with the fwd line as a whole, like what I see with bedford and Pickett is fairly productive, everyone else is problematic to some degree or another.

Bit hard if all we do is bomb it in to packs for any player to mark we do not have a park mark player time to change it up.

I’m not letting Brown off the hook that easily. Yeah our forward connection was poor - so what, it often is, but normally he can take marks leading up, bring the ball to ground and just generally add physical presence. Tonight he added absolutely nothing whatsoever.

I’m a fan of his, but performances like that can’t be accepted.

JVR not playing for Casey so there goes that dream.

IMO it will be the expected changes given injuries

Zero chance JVR got picked anyway even if he was available. Throwing kids to the wolves who aren’t ready was so 2009. If we need a break-glass forward, Mitch Brown will play. It’s what he’s on the list for and he’s been in form.

Out: Flu?    In: Oxygen?

The Tomlinson-Langdon-Harmes-McDonald additions seem natural and a dramatic difference. Touch wood on May but as others have noted, concussion protocols probably mean no sighting in six days' time.

I'm wondering how many weeks left until Salem is back? Would obviously replace Hunt, although I don't mean to be harsh on Hunt as he was just completely out of comfort zone today.

Yhere was obviously something wrong with Petracca on the day and it really robbed our midfield and made it possible to tag Oliver and have it mean something. Viney was very good but Dunstan was pretty limited in accumulation as well as effect. Far too often the ruck - Jackson and Gawn - ended up chasing their own hitout instead of being part of any organised onball system.

Anyway, it's not so bad. It is bad, though.

Dunstan is just limited in general. No foot skills, no urgency, and not much pace. He is exactly what we do not need. I watched him in the VFL and was surprised he got a call up. He just doesn’t add anything to our side. Harmes will be a big IN when he comes back.

Tomlinson for May is a certainty.

After that depends on Petty, Petracca and Lever's fitness, and the fitness of those who we desperately need back.

Melksham, Dunstan and Weideman should all be dropped. Who replaces them is TBD but hopefully Langdon, Harmes and McDonald are fit.

If Langdon's not ready we can't go into the game with Spargo the starting wing.

I'm prepared to give Brown one more game, in the hope that the delivery is better than it was tonight. And because Weideman was just as bad but with fewer credits in the bank.

Cant believe we played Spargo on the other wing?   If Baker puts in a very good game tomorrow and Lingers is still out, surely he comes in to cover for this week?

Harmes is as big an out as Lingers & Plugga Mac IMV.  Bit of a Bellwether for this side?  Would love to see our winning % with Harmes in the team.

I can't see Harmes being ready yet but if he is Rivers hasn't been outstanding this yr,  with Salem coming back his spot in a fully fit side could be under scrutiny.

At the end of the day it wasn't a good loss, but when you lose your Full Back, Centre Half Fwd and AA Wingman from your side it's not ideal.

If Petty doesn’t get up I wonder if Rosman would be a consideration  - he has been consistently good for Casey

Watching Casey, Rosman is much improved, but I'd still have Turner ahead of him (not sure if Turner is match fit after injury yet).

Have Bedford over Spargo at the moment.

I don't think weid will come out after yesterday. Tomo will clearly come in for May but even if TMac comes back and Petty is cleared,  I'd be doubtful that both would be 100%, so he provides some additional coverage if we had issues down back again.

Some super bizarre observations in this thread. So in the spirit of '09, here are my well thought through changes:

Out: everyone

In: anyone who can get a kick.

And Goody is skating on thin ice.

Trac was sick, so I doubt he will be an issue.

We have lost 1 game for the year and we had an off day.  Your forward line comment is ludicrous.

We have some very average supporters.   When we had May and Petty on we were 5 goals up.  Both down for the 2nd half and Trac sick and people are jumping up and down like we are 1-10.  Give me strength!!

Rivers had a knee injury preseason and was rushed in for round 1 due to our huge list of injuries in the backline. He’s been underdone all year and really struggled with form as a result. He’d be first out of the backline once Salem returns from injury. Hopefully the bye helps him recover a bit as he’s had heavy taping on is knee most weeks and really limited with his drive coming off halfback compared to his good first two seasons.

Hey D11. Spot on. There's a chit-load of rcap in the footy media about who is the best big back in the comp. Sometimes May gets a mention. He is, IMHO, easily the best, and most influential (in a team sense) in the comp by a fair margin. I grew up watching Dench, Moore and Southby in the '70s . . . arguably the golden age of post-war fullbacks. May's form over the last two years puts him in that company. Career wise, he's behind that group as they were brilliant for 10 years plus. But over the last two years, his form is equivalent to their best IMHO.

He had a PCL injury that takes some getting over. Needs a rest when Hibberd and/or Salem is available.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
